View Full Version : A presence that announces itself with a scent

I'm housesitting for some friends, and ever since I've been here I will sometimes get a very strong smell of cigarette smoke or cigar smoke--and my friends have lived here for five years and never smoked. Some things have occurred--dishwasher turning itself on, lights going on and off.
I'd like to know the best way to communicate with this presence that I mean it no harm, I respect its space and want to take care of it. I have seen spirits in the past, but this presence will not show itself.

hhhmmm, I have had the same problem too. I will smell something in the house and I have had things happen as well. My suggestion is to just talk to it and let it know you mean it no harm and and see if your friends might want to help you help it to move on. Maybe telling it to leave and move on will give it what it needs to leave and maybe find peace. Just a thought.

Talk out loud to it if you have to ... but try to remain as neutral as possible with it. You're not there to feed it, you're not there to tell it to move on ...
A lot of people assume that if they see it, it's their job to do something about it. IT ISN'T.
You don't want anything following you home, do you??
You can ask your friends if they have a "visitor" ... see what their reaction is.

I sense no negativity from it, and my friends have experienced similar things. I'm fine sharing the house, after all isn't my house! I just don't want the oven to come on in the middle of the night--and unfortunately I'm allergic to cigarette smoke.
I've told it that I consider myself a guest in the house--maybe its lonely and just likes having someone around to pester.

The spirit is probably just curious as to who you are... I wouldn't do anything, it's not your house. But you could ask for it to please respect you while you're there and you will do the same.
Just a thought...

You could tell it you are allergic to cigarette smoke and that You do not mind co habitating while Your friends are gone. If You do not sense negative energy I think it is just making its presence known and trying to find out about You in the process.Kind of like protecting the home from intruders for your friends."Watch Ghost"

Well that rules out my idea of burning some tobaco for them in good natured terms :P

Actually I like that idea, maybe if I just set some out in a ritual bowl instead of burning it. My allergies could probably handle that.
Thanks everyone, this has given me a lot to think about!

I have also smelled smoke in our house after the death of 2 uncles I was close to. Just a whiff and then nothing. Speak to the entities as you would any living person and ask them to stop with great respect of course. Let them know you want to live in harmony with them. Worth a try.

If this is an older house it could be a former resident who is simply carrying on 'living' his/her life in a place that was comfortable for them. If the spirit meant you any harm I'm sure you would have experienced something by now.
