THE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM QUILT PROJECT
February 14, 2001
In addition to the the Pagan Unity Campaign Political Action Committee's "I Am A Pagan" Project to make President Bush and other politicians aware of Paganism's unity and strength, the Covenant of the Sacred Moon is organizing a Religious Freedom Quilt project. The group states in a press release, "It is the belief of the Covenant of the Sacred Moon and many others across the United States that our President and his appointed aides have no idea of how many Wiccans and Pagans or other defenders of religious freedom are out there. Let's unite and show him with a quilt." Similar quilts, most notably the AIDS Memorial Quilt Project which now contains over 44,000 panels, have been highly successful in raising awareness for other causes.
The Religious Freedom Quilt will be outlined in the colors of the American flag--red, white, and blue--and will contain patches sent by solitary practitioners, Wiccan or Pagan organizations, covens, or other defenders of religious freedom. Anyone is free to participate, whether they are pagan or not, as long as their contribution conforms with the specifications for the project.
To participate, decorate a 6-inch square of material with symbols that mean something to you. For members of covens or other Pagan organizations, you might include your coven or organization emblem, color, name, tradition, etc. Please note that you may send one patch for your organization and one per individual member. If you choose this option, please use the same color fabric for all squares as the coven members' squares will be grouped surrounding the main coven entry. Solitary practitioners might decorate their square with emblems, colors, and names which are relevant to their Craft. Remember, each square will represent one pagan/witch/supporter to be included in the count, so the more the better!
A few notes to remember while constructing your piece: 1) If you use paint, please make sure to use washable fabric paint. 2) Please leave a 1/2 inch border for sewing. 3) Since the Covenant of the Sacred Moon follows the Wiccan Rede, no squares depicting violence in any form will be allowed.
When you have completed your quilt piece(s), place it in a plastic bag (for protection) and mail it to: The Goddess Shoppe, C/O Covenant of the Sacred Moon, 214 Depot Street, Clark Summit, PA 18411. The deadline for entries is June 30, 2001.
The organizers of this project intend to take the finished quilt to Washington, D.C. to display during a peaceful Religious Freedom Rally (date to be announced). If you would like to be included in the list of supporters announced at that rally, include your group name and/or magical name with your completed piece. If you want to be notified of the dates of the rally, include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your quilt piece and information will be sent to you as it becomes available.

I can't remember the name of the site where I found this, but I have been working on this for a couple of weeks, and I thought others might like to participate.

I'm not exactly a pro at sewing, either, but I figure the more people who get involved, the better for everyone!

I knew about this one but lost it in the shuffle. Thanks for posting it. :)

You don't have to quilt the blocks or do patchwork. You can if you wish, I'm a beginning quilter myself. You just have to send in a 6in square that represents you. You can paint it, draw on it, dye it or whatever you want, sewing is not necesary.Leaving the 1/2 in boarder is important as it will be in the seam.

I think it's great I want to send one for each of my family members.

How about we combine efforts here? It says that Organizations can have a square with members squares around it? What do you think?

But we'd have to pick a color and send them in together. And design a central square naming our community.

Well, if there are more members who would like to do this, maybe we can come up with a design that everyone likes for the central one. I would be glad to send them in all together. Let me know if you are interested in this...

Well, I am going to be trying to get pagans in the area together for a Quilting Bee to create these patches. Let me know if you are interested in having me send them in together for this community.

Hey, there are many inovations out there that make sewing obsolete - like fabric glue that is acivated by an iron. I plan to paint mine cause I'm an artist with a paintbrush and lump of clay, but I still haven't figured out how to reatach a severed button. While on the subject, I'd like lavendar or white - for higher consciousness, or purple for intelligence.
