I was just wondering something. I'm new at this...so sorry if my question is a little...well you know
my altar, i have my representations of the elements...but my altar isn't that big. Do I always have to have the representations of the elements out on top of my altar? I want to decorate it with each holiday, but I'm afraid it will be too cluttered. any advice? i'd appreciate it. :) Thanks a bunch!

Hi M&M's and all,

welcome! please no need to apologise we are all here for each other and there are no dumb questions excelt the ones you dont ask:D
I saw some really informitive posts about alters in the magick section and in the New Pagan section...

but basicly your alter should be a reflection of your spirit... there is alot that you can do and not all is written in stone...

Good Luck!:D

Merry Meet:wave:

Like Xander said, your altar can be any way you want. It's yours and your tool to use to honor the Goddes & God. For example, my most recent altar was a small cut log that I saw on the side of the road. The surface was not that very large. When I would perform my workings & rites, I always had candles, a Buddha statue, a seashell, and my incense burner. That was about as much surface area I had. I kept my cauldron, & some other bowls next to it.

Another friend of mine uses a windowsill as hers. It just has two candles on it that are representations of the God & Goddess.

I don't have my tree stump altar right now. I nearly had a major accident in my house few weeks ago & had to get rid of it. I'm looking for a new one. I saw a beautiful cabinet, with a fold out top & storage space underneath, that I would like to get.

As long as your altar feels good to you. Then it is right for YOU. I hope I helped clarify a little bit. Good luck in your learnings. If you ever have a question, please post them. We're all here to help. :heartthro :sunny:

I am luck enough to have an antique table that I use for an alter. It is pretty spacious, although I prefer to keep it uncluttered. Before that I used a small bookcase. THis is a good alternative for those who don't have too much space available. You can use the top of the book case for the "main" part of the alter and if you have some extra space here and there you can utilize that as well. You could also use some small shelves on brackets...each one can represent a different element! Just some of my crazy ideas! Iv'e used them all!

Maybe you could use things that represented multiple elements. Roses reprent earth, the fragrance could represent air, the color could represent fire, and if they're in a vase, some water would be water, and you're all set!

Thanks Xander for pointing out the discussions in both Magick&Rituals and New Pagans - drop by to read those too Adia, there are a lot of great posts!

Just in short, as I've posted this in the other thread in New Pagans too, I think. I have several altars - one is my personal altar, and another is our livingroom altar which is partly dedicated to healing and angels and the other half I have made seasonal - at the moment decorated for Samhain. But then, we don't have restrictions on room or anything so we can do that ;)

There is no right or wrong in altars, go with whatever you feel is comfortable. I once had a large sideboard-type table for my seasonal altar - I decorated it according to the Sabbats, and a small coffee table sat in front of it which was my working altar, and I could move it if I needed to do a circle or anything to the centre of the room, or into the bedroom if I wanted it in there, and such. So there is definitely no right or wrong. Trust your instinct!

Mine's on a shelf table. I have my alter on top and my shrine on the bottom. I made the cloth for it myself. I have a very small space aswell so I used small things and taper candles . :)
