Everytime I dye my hair, some sort of disaster occurs. When I was 17, I lost a fight with a bottle of blue dye, and transformed myself into a smurf. much washing managed to get most of it off, but I had to go out that night looking faintly hypothermic.

Last night I dyed my hair black. My hair is very long (the bottom of my back), but I still cant understand how I manage to get the dye everywhere]. When I looked in the mirror after I had finished massaging all the mixture into my hair, I noticed I had about 4 large spots of light brown dye on my face. I didnt panic when it didnt come off straight away. A bit of soap normally does the trick, if it doesnt come off in the shower when I rinse the dye off. I rinse the dye off and look in the mirror. the light brown spots have turned black. Panic rises. I am the 102nd dalmation. I set to wok trying to get it off, but it makes hardly makes any difference. I enter a sort of delirious state. After much scrubbing, and pleading, I manage to get it off, and say to myself-as I always do- "next time I'm going to the hairdressers to get it done".

But I never learn.

Surely there is an easier way to get dye of ones skin? I want to dye my hair red, next time. I dont want to end up looking like this little fella :hairred:

putting vaseline or a thick face cream on the parts you don't want colored may help for a barrier.

 I had to laugh, TrippingdDaisy! I go thru the same problems. I'll have it all over my face, upper arms, down my back....I never understand how this happens, cause I think I'm always so careful.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove dye stains from the bathroom door? One time I didn't notice them until the next day, and they were too set in to scrub off. Luckily, we're kinda reclusive and don't have much company, so there's noone to see it but us.

Well everytime I dye my hair I get a few spots here and there. I just take a warm damp cloth(one that I don't mind getting spotty) and wipe off the dye. If its a little more "set" then I just use soap and scrub with the warm water mixture. But I'm sure baby oil would get it off. Perhaps even a lil rubbing alchohol.

I've been dying my hair for about ten years and I still have those problems! My mom's always got dye remover that you can get at a beauty supply shop that I usually use. But, cigarette ash works, baby oil, and seabreeze astringent. :D

Haha - I had an incident two dye jobs ago. I . . . um . . . didn't really screw the lid of the applicator bottle on properly. Yay me. :weirdsmil So when I went to squirt the first bit of dye onto my hair, that stuff went everywhere. EVERYWHERE. You would be amazed - it doesn't look like that much when it's in the bottle, but when it's on your floor, your walls, your counter and sink . . . wow. At one point I was actually using my hair to wipe it up, because I knew I had to finish with the coverage. It was classy. I dye my hair red, so now it looks like there is gore all over my bathroom walls (which is actually kind of appropriate because I have a Psycho shower curtain). Yeah, I rule. _whistle_

What you do to get the dye off your skin is take a little bit of the dye from the bottle, add about a spot onto a washrag with warm water. It'll take it right off. The dye attracts itself to itself. It comes out every single time. :)

If I get hair dye on my skin its usually around the hair line and my ears but even then.. the brown always comes off... You should let me do your hair! :woot:

I once dyed my hair a suprisingly pumpkin orange by accident. It was red when I went to bed, but somehow, the color leaked out onto my pillow and left behind orange. I was not amused. My mom was, though.

Since it was close to Halloween, I kept it for a while, then grew to like it. It was... unusual.

I had a horribly unfortunate incident with hair dye right after my daughter was born. I had been dye deprived throughout my pregnancy and was anxious to resume my addiction, starting with a nice auburn color. I very carefully applied the haircolor, waited the length of time indicated by the strand test and rinsed... VOILA! I had the most magnificent shade of Black with purple highlights. I have no idea what happened and when I went out to show my mother the results, as soon as I turned around the burst into hysterical laughter and told me to look at the back of my hair. Several clever mirror angles later revealed a lovely odd golden colored streak running the full length of my waist length hair. Unfortunately it was time for me to go to work... so I pulled it back into a rather severe pony tail which concealed my streak, went to work and was promptly congratulated on my new goth lifestyle choice. I went the next day to have it professionally corrected and have not dyed my own hair since.

I'm a hair stylists and have two tricks for removing color on skin...

If you notice the stain quickly (before the color has had a lot of time to oxidize and darken) you can put a little dab of color from the bottle onto the spot and wipe it off quickly. If you go to a salon, you might have noticed that the stylist usually brings the bottle to the sink with you when it's time to shampoo... that's what s/he is doing -- removing skin stains.

The second option works if the stain has already had time to set it: You can buy color remover from your local beauty supply. Some brands work better than others depending upon the porosity of your skin.

If you know you're going to be messy and don't want to bother with clean-up, you can always use a "color blocker" on your skin before you apply the color. Vaseline works -- put a little on your finger and spread it around your hairline. But, be careful to keep it just on your skin and not on your hair.

Good Luck.

(As a side note... one of clients came to me after being told by her former hairstylist to use AJAX to clean the stains off her face. Trusting the professional advice, she went home and scrubbed her face with AJAX!!! Needless to say, it was an upleasant experience and she ended up burning her skin.)
