View Full Version : Pagan equivalent of "amen"?

Do any of you have a word(s) that you use to finish off a prayer/talk to God/dess, the way Christians use the word amen, to punctuate a prayer?

I know many use "so mote it be", but to me, those words are more related to magick/ritual.

I usually say thank you. :) There realy isn't anything. I mean, the feeling really can't be put into words, so "thank you" is the best I can do.

LOL Mindflayer...I got your humor, but I don't think HC appreciated it...

Um, I would think that "so mote it be" is the closest equivalent you will find out there, HorseCrow...I mean, there are very few universal Paganisms (the equivalent of what I call "Christianese").

Blessed Be

So Mote It Be

An It Harm None

Brightest Blessings

or simply Blessings

Merry Meet/Part

Those are about all that I have encountered. And the only one that resembles what you are looking for is SMIB. But if you think about it, it fits. "Amen" is what is said at the end of prayer, and rituals/meditations ARE prayer.

I spent a long time (as in years) trying to find something that worked for me. Now, when I'm at my altar and finish a prayer or meditation, I stand before the masks I made of my gods and I:

Touch my heart with my hands and say, "My heart"
Touch my wrists together and say, "My blood"
Touch my fingers to my third eye and say, "My soul"
And then open my hands to the altar, palms up and say, "My life."

It works for me because of the oaths/pledges I took to my deities.

Wow, did not know that. But I grew up knowing it meant "So be it" so that makes sense...

I still use "amen". My understanding is that it translates roughly to "I believe", and that makes total sense to me for ending any prayer.

Why not "Amen"? *Shrugs* I don't think Christianity has trademarked it. :)

"amen" probably refers to the Egyption god Amon, who is the creator of all.

Heya!
I agree with some of the other people about not being able to say it in words, what you mean. I clasp my hands together while I'm praying, and when I'm done, it feels like all of my prayer is cupped in my hands. So I kiss the top of them, and simultaneously open them up/ "push" the energy upwards with my hands, and blow on it, kind of like "sending" it out.
Maybe you could find a meaningful gesture for yourself?

I have no problem if you want to--to me, it's the connection that it implies that counts...the words are generic enough that a lot of people could find a way to tailor it for their personal use. (Just, if you mention it to others and they ask where you got it, tell them me ~grins~). Who knows, it may end up in one of my books someday.

Yasmine :colorful:

You got it.....thank you !!!! :floating:

The word Amen is related to the the Hebrew word "Emunah" that means faith and/or belief. Therefore reciting Amen to a blessing or a prayer demonstrates a statement of affirmation that the blessing is true and hope that the prayer will be answered.

I say "Bydded y Felly" (So be it), as a Welshman of course. lol. When talking with unenlightenened persons (anyone who doesn't speak Welsh ;)) "So be it" is acceptable -- I say this a lot when someone childishly insults me. It's fun.
Child>I hate you and I hope you burn in hell, bitch.
Baby_Rhys> Oh, so be it.

I think what you say must be true... As a young child, I was given to sounding like a welshman, my mother would always say I was mumbling... _tomatoe_ :nyah:

Honestly, I love Welsh, but pronounciation really escapes me, so I must be unenlightened.

LOL. For the record, Cymraeg [the Welsh language] is very clear and vinyardly sweet sounding, in comparison with any other Western European language -- even beating out the other Insular Celtic languages, in mine humble opinion.

Nope, I don't think we have trademarked it -- and I don't think that amen should be seen as exclusively christian anyway.

Use away!!! :yayhawaii

Amen/So Mote it Be

they both are used to say the same thing. *shrugs*

what does it matter, other than to have a Label associated with it?

to bring up the issue of "What is the Pagan Equivalent of the christian term..." I mean, some christians use So Mote it Be, and some Mystics and Sages, as well as other Pagans use AMEN as well, I use both accordingly depending on where I am so as not to offend anyone..

it really doesnt matter to me

I usually put my hands over my heart and then to my lips. I kiss my hands and raise them then say "my love and thanks to you"

For actual prayer, I touch my hand to my forehead, then to my lips, then I gesture outward (toward whatever I've been conversing with). I actually picked it up from "Dances of India" when they came through... I don't know the context, but it looked like a lovely devotional gesture... ^_^

Praying is just a concentration of energy, to me, so I usually say "so mote it be" if I feel the need to say anything at all.

i say "Solas Duit"-pronounced "suh-lass duht"

Which is the Irish for, well it doesnt have an exact tanslation but it means "Light to you" more or less.

I dont use it exactly as amen, more of a blessing.

I use 'Amen'. I also clap my hands loudly and raise them to the sky.

I usually say soemthing along the lines of 'by the will of the Gods' if I'm praying. One gesture I do all the time for whatever reason, I'll kiss the first joint of my forefinger on my right hand, touvh it to my third eye before touching it to my heart. I have a distinct feeling I nicked it from The Mummy from those dudes on the horses on top of the sand dunes... At least I think that's where it came from. Eh, either way, it's something I do if I'm acknowledging something special, like if I see the moon, or during my prayers. To me, it's linking my mouth (my speech) with my mind (my thoughts) and my heart (my soul). I bow before my altar as well, standing up and kneeling. i hope that's coherent.

One "translation" I know of for "Amen" is roughly:
"Sealed in trust, faith, and truth, I confirm this with my whole being."

I figure that's good enough for me
