i have to say something here.
i find the little icon with the machine gun really really really upsetting.
Especially given recent events.... there is nothing at all funny or cute about a representation of a firing machine gun.
Think about the reality of what that represents.
Have you ever seen a person who has been shot to death? Not very pleasant....
So why do we have a "fun" representation of a violent act here on our forum where people are supposed to feel safe?
Sometimes it causes me to simply close the window and leave...driven away by the concept. Is that just me being "overly sensitive"? i know the gun culture in the States is strong... but it seems to me that if we prohibit offensive words here on the forum so that people will feel safe.... shouldn't we also stop using the machinegun icon? i think a representation of murdering someone is a lot more violent and offensive then a four letter word. bb talamh

Incidentally, this subject has already been touched upon here at MW - search the threads and you will probably find it.

IMO that IS being overly sensitive, it seems to me there are far larger issues to worry about than violent smilies. It feels, quite frankly like another example of the PC Thought Police telling me what is and is not accepatble to think, write, and say.
But as I am new here, and certainly don't want anyone to feel "driven away" by my posts, I have edited the smiley for you.

Thank you very much, Aengus. i truly appreciate it. It really does affect my comfort level.
i think the whole matter of political correctness is a double-edged sword. A lot of the time it is simply used so some people can give the superficial, outward appearance of seeming to support certain positions but that privately they still think and act in the same hurtful and damaging ways. Personally, in business and professional dealings, i would rather know where a person stands on an issue so i can better guage my sincere and considered and out-front response... rather then have them say one thing and mean the exact opposite.
On the other hand... it's like sexual harassment... it used to be considered OK by some bosses and now most of them have finally got the message that it is definately *not* OK... so i guess that while i would rather that they refrain from sexual harassment because it is simply a violation of another person's rights, if they still think it's OK but refrain because they know the person can blow the whistle on them and they can not longer get away with it.. well.. if that's political correctness then so be it.
i realize some people are brought up with a very different attitude towards guns and have a comfort level with them that i don't have. i learned how to shoot a gun and a rifle so that i would be knowledgeable and informed about them. And i have made my choice.... and a representation of killing really does make me feel physically ill... even though it is just a little cartoon smiley.
i also can't listen to the song "Mack the Knife" because although it has a really bouncy, catchy tune, it is about a person who is a hired, gangland killer who is being glorified for being good at the job of murder. Shudder.
So maybe i *am* a bleeding-heart, liberal, wishywashy, typically, overly-niiiiiiiice little obedient Canadian (and maybe i'm not... heheheh) but i do thank you for the sensitivity and kindness you do me by editing out the nasty automatic. bb talamh

I realize that this is veering off-topic, but really do feel a need to respond.
First, Boy! On other boards that I frequent, I'm usually the "bleeding-heart liberal...might be quite refreshing if I turn out to be the token reactionary here!
Second, I think that maybe your point is well-taken as it applies to gratutitous violence (i.e. machine-gun toting smilies) something that I will do a bit of self-examination on.
However. Your comparison of my smiley to sexual harrasment was maybe a bit over the top, don't you think?
Regarding violence in general...I wish we lived in a world where violence was unnecessary, I really do. But I don't see that happening anytime soon. Every time I turn on the light switch, Drink a glass of milk, or mow the lawn I am commiting violence against some creature, somewhere. It's an inescapeable part of life, as I see it. I think thats why one of the quarters is represented by the sword. It represents, at it's most basic level, the ability and the power to choose.
Death feeds life. To eat, to survive, I must kill. It is a choice I don't shirk from. When I lived on a commune, one of the rules was that if you wanted to eat meat, you had to participate in the slaughter of one of the farm animals. Some chose to become vegitarians, others experienced what our ancestors always knew if they wanted to have meat on the table. A very healthy practice, IMO.
I suppose my views are shaped by coming from a warrior tradition. My father and uncle were cops, I and my two brothers were soldiers. I don't currently choose to own a gun, but have in the past, and might in the future. There are those in my life who I would die for to defend, there are those I would kill for to defend. Again, it's a choice I do not shirk from.

That's odd...Look there they are...on the left side of my screen...right under where it says YOUR REPLY...see forum rules...and under that there is a small box with a few smilies and i can open the box to get more.
I wonder if Mol or Semele could enlighten us as to why some people have this option and others don't. Maybe you have to be a member of this forum for a while?
