Beltane Vail Between The Worlds

This Vail is one way to symbolize “The Vail Between The Worlds”, and our ability to pass between the two. Beltane is more often associated with the lighthearted and wondrous aspects of Faerie Land.

Get the kids involved, this is a great family time activity. Children love to help and be creative!

Instructions:
Hang a tension rod across a doorway or across the hallway.

Over the rod, hang tulle or nylon netting; make sure it is long enough to barely brush the floor. Double up to two or three layers for a fuller look. You can also put a darker color, (example: Dark Green) under a light color, (example: White) for a more dramatic look. Secure the netting to the rod, (Use a glue gun to secure the bottom layer to the rod, and then between layers of the netting for extra hold. Fabric glue can also be used between layers of the netting, but it takes longer to dry.) Use yarn, embroidery floss, or ribbon in the same color to secure the netting to the rod.

Cut the netting in half from the bottom up to approximately 3 inches below the rod. Cut one side then the other, make sure to cut the netting in an off set way so there will be over laps.

Edging can be put on the netting, (although the netting should not fray, this is a good way to clean up the edges. I would use wide ribbon in the same color of the netting. Fold it in half long wise, then secure with glue. You can use a hot glue gun or fabric glue)

Use silk flowers or leaves that trail or dangle to decorate the top (this helps conceal the rod), and along the sides by the wall or door frame. Bridal stuff is great for this, check your craft stores for ideas, the possibilities are endless. Decorate the netting with ribbon, small silk flowers, and leaves. I’ve even seen butterflies at the store that would look great. Glitter can also be used if you don’t mind the mess. (To do this, lay the netting out flat Sprinkle on glitter, then spray lightly with hair spray.)

I put alot of time into researching Beltane several years back and have made this a very special holiday for my family. I decorate the altar in red & white, with a red spirit candle and two white goddess/god candles. I add flowers and then deocrate my staff in ribbons and flower garland so it looks like a maypole.

Edain McCoy has a wonderful book called SABBATS which has some great ideas for the all the holidays - plus there are single sabbat titles that I have seen also - Raven Grimassi has one on Beltane, though I have not read it.

I do not celerbate the fertility aspect of the holiday as much as the simple joy of welcoming the warmer months and the "birthing" of new ideas.

I also bake special shortcakes for use in cakes & wine and we have a really nice dinner - usually lighter spring type food - pasta salad, veggies and fruit.

I also make a special Beltane oil and dedicate candles anointed witht he oil on Beltane eve. My friends usually have a Beltane eve party and there is much dancing and singing. The women wear flower garlands and we usually have bells tied on ribbon around our ankles. It's a wonderful celebration!

Amita

We go all out with the fertility aspects, twinkies are VERY Phallic! Anything representing union, male/female, productivity, potential etc. Firecrackers, wands, cups, bowls, pink breast like balloons. The kids groan over the references to sexual union, but they get a kick out of it as well.

We want them to know sex is really fun, cool, and something that affects everyone. I want them to be responsible, and know it is something normal, to be celebrated and that all these people in their lives partake as well, and that they can talk to all us growups about it.

I agree im excited about celebrating the fertility aspect, i find it so refreshing where sex is sacred not dirty and fround upon, its also not casual. I dont plan on doing it in the near futur, but i love the idea of celebrating it, i thought about a pink altar cloth with lots of rose petals, is that a good interpretation?
