I was wondering what folks here thought of tattoos, at the present I only have three http://www.bluecatsden.com/tattoo.html but am planning to have a greenman added to my back. My tattoo artist is waiting for things to get stable with me healthwise because I am still taking anti-biotics for part of the problems I am having with my lungs. (One should never get a tatt while on strong anti-biotics, the meds can actually drive the ink out of the body and it makes a horrible mess, I have seen this, ICK!). Bob (Sandman www.zianet.com/sandman) also jokes and sez I have to bring the lawn mower to shave my back, it seems when the hair started leaving my head it found a new home LOL.
Well, any thoughts on tattoos?

I currently have two but they are un-witch-related for lack of better terminology!! I plan on having one added to my lower back of three pentacles entwined in kind of a celtic knot. I hear that's a sensitive area to get one so believe it or not I'm kind of excited about it because my first two didn't hurt at all!!

I'd love to get a tatoo and have gone in and looked at them but they cost too much :( especially one of any significant size, over 3 in. They also said they cost more if they have alot of circles or curves. Is that true?
On the same note. I love the commercial by VISA with the guy getting the Donna tatoo. :)

The cost of the tattoo depends upon many things, but size and detail are two important considerations. It is also wise to check around, there are a wide variety of tattoo artists and abilities. There is always an important health consideration. The guy I use ALWAYS uses new needles and autoclaves his instruments and needles before each use. Every customer gets new needles and sterile instruments, he also wears latex gloves and gives precise care instructions.

I want one very much- I've had a picture for ten years of the one I want. However, I am a big baby and I'm too chicken to get it done! My friend has eight, and when she had the last one done, I went along. It took almost 4 hours, and she ended up passing out. Now, I'm even more chicken!!
bluecat
March 13th, 2001, 01:33 PM
Was that a solid 4 hour session? If so there was some irresponsible action going on there. It is always advisable to take breaks at certain stages during a tattoo and drink fluids, not too many because you don't want to thin the blood and NO ALCOHOL ...
I won't lie to you there is pain involved, but it's more like one big long scratch and some areas of the body are more sensitive to pain than others. You would do better than you think. Don't let your friends fainting episode scare you away.

I am a big fan of tattoos, but have yet to get one. Or two or three! I have two in mind that I want to get. I think my problem is that I've moved so much in the past few years taht I never found a good and trustworthy artist where I was living. Now that I'm settled in, I may find someone.
I'm not so much afraid of the pain, though. Believe it or don't! I have a high threshold for pain, and figure it's just a part of the process.
What I really need to do is talk about it with my spouse. Sometimes he seems enthusiastic, and other times not so much so.

Although we all know cost is always a big factor it needs to be said that this is something that you will have on your body for the rest of your life. I don't mind paying a lot for a good one!!! I've seen some awfully bad home-made tattoos and it always makes me wonder what on earth was that person thinking!!!????

I love Tattoos, and have had four of them done over a period of years. Always have them done by the same guy, who is an excellent tattooist and interprets exactly what I want. My tattoos represent important things in my life which I want to carry with me always.
I have a small red rose on my left shoulder which I had done when my Mum died. Her middle name was Rose, so she is with me always.
A small irridescent butterfly sits on my right thigh, and is my son Simon, who died within a few hours of birth. He to is with me always.
On my right arm is a full circlet, of my own design, with 9 small pentacles and 9 small crescent moons, in turquoise and purple. I had it done for my initiation, so it's a constant reminder of my committment.
Finally, I have a small fairy- like elf on my right ankle, who reminds me that laughter is the best medecine!
I also have nine piercings, small bellbars at the end of both eyebrows, upper right ear, inner right ear, lower right ear, two lower left ear, one right nostril and a belly bar!
I love all my tattoos and all my piercings. As Beau Brummell once said, if you can't be beautiful - be different. Mind you, I'm pretty certain that tattooing and piercing are addictive (or maybe I just have an addictive personality), but I have always thought long and hard before having any of them done, and made quite sure that I want them for life.

Tattoos can be like chocolate or potato chips, after you eat the first one you often find yourself going back to the bag as often as you can.

Couldn't agree more Bluecat. I have to keep a tight control over myself, otherwise I'll end up like Lydia the Tattooed Lady! I'm already contemplating the next tatt, probably an anklet. If the one I had done on my right ankle is anything to go by, it should be really painful. Still takes my mind of my other aches and pains!

I have to agree with the additiction thing myself. the last tattoo I got I made the appointment and didn't know what I was going to get until I pulled into the driveway and decided ok, I'm here I have to get something!!!
I tried body piercing in my naval and although I have gotten many complements on it I don't think I could do it again. I was assured I would not bleed or feel much pain. I bled like a stuck pig and couldn't touch it for a week afterwards. I think I'll stick with the tattoo thing!!

I have three tattoos grouped together on my very lower back (didn't hurt much...I envisioned the pain to be more, so when I got it...it wasn't bad....then again I have a high pain threshold too.). One I had done about 1 1/2 years ago, the other two I had done at the same time....about a month ago. It's mostly tribal, but at the top of the tat, I have the )0( symbol. My tat is black and dark green. If I had a picture I'd show you, but I can never seem to remember to by film when I go to the store, even if that is what I went for! :sunny: It's probably for the best, don't need to be showing the top of my tush online! :P
The only bad thing about getting a tat is that you can't donate blood for a year.

I currently have one tattoo...specially placed and all that good stuff. (Can't stop a ceremonial magician from being a ceremonial magician). Anyway, I have a seven-pointed start around my belly button. The seven pointed star represents the entirety of the universe in my tradition. I placed it around my belly button as it was as close to my solar plexus chakra as I thought to get. The solar plexus chakra is the center for power and will, of self-definition and self-esteem. It's only proper that one of the two most important symbols in my tradition would be there. :sunny:

I only have one tattoo at the present time. It's a half-armband of a pretty tribal design with a pentacle in the center of my left bicep. I got it on my 22nd birthday, a week before I found out I was pregnant! I'm glad I got it then, because the tattoo studio I had it done at won't tattoo you if you are pregnant (a good policy in my opinion). I told myself I would get a new tattoo every year on my birthday as kind of a milestone marker, but I couldn't afford one last year. The one I had now was a design the artist, Charlotta Brunson, came up with for me. She specializes in mystical designs, is pagan herself, and is probably the only person I would trust to put ink on me!
However, I decided that from now on I want all my tattoos to be my own designs. I have three on the shelf that I may get all for my birthday just for the heck of it.
The first is a tribal phoenix design that looks as if it is made of black flames and has an ankh in the center of its body. I plan to get it between my shoulder blades.
The second is another tribal-like design of an eye with three tears from the comic book Dawn, which I love. I plan to put this one on my right calf.
The third is a cute little purple fairie with tiny sparkly stuff floating around it. This one I plan to put on my left ankle, which is prone to injury and I figured it needed something to keep an eye on it. :D
I love them all. The only problem is which one should I get first?!

I must be living in a cave or something. I just found out my tattoo studio has a website! It's http://www.tattoocharlies.com/
They are very well known for being the best and CLEANEST tattoo studio in the south. You can also see a biography and a portfolio of all the artists that work there. The lady that did mine is Charlotta Brunson and she works at the Lexington store. She is VERY good. I highly recommend her, or any of the staff, as I've seen their work too.

I have a few ideas that I've been too poor/chickenshit to get. ^_^
I want an armband or anklet of circuitry, a cherry blossom between and above my shoulderblades, and *something* on my lower back.
I know if I got one I'd have to design the thing myself. It's going to be on me for forever...It has to be personal and well thought out, IMO. I'd never get one on a drunken whim.

I have one so far. I took about four years to decide on the design. I figured it's permanent and I want to be able to look at it when I'm Seventy and smile. Not be like, what was I thinking. Ya know, the granny thing... Where'd you get the tatt grandma?
I chose a tribal of my own design. Mine is of feline eyes. It signifies how I watch others and am able to learn from their errors with out having to do them. I am a watcher by heart. I feel what I see. When someone is walking, I can imagine myself in their place. That is why I am a watcher. But beware, I also engage when provolked. B)
I say take your time on picking a tatt.

What I did before I got my tatt was pull out hairs on my leg. On my leg is where I got it placed. I had always heard that it feels as though you are getting poked by a needle. Literally, I know. But I mean when you accidentally stick yourself with a stick pin or needle.
Sure it hurts but not like when you slowly poke through the skin.
I know it sounds a little grose or sick, but it helped me to cope with not knowing the pain. I know it now, but I will say this....to me, it felt as though I was pulling out hairs. You sortta go numb when they go at an area for a little bit. It did sting though. And it felt a little warm. But that is due to the trauma that your skin goes through. I mean com'on now. What you think it feels like, a feather brushing by? HEE HEE :D

Well, it is illegal in Oklahoma... parlors not the tats themselves. I got mine in Silom Springs arkansas with a very reputable artist who has had his work published in many tatoo mags and won numerous awards. Copycat is the only person in the world I would trust completely. I would let him freehand one for me without even knowing what it was. He is that in tuned with what you want/need. He did an original design for me. It is half sun half moon and makes one face. Very brightly colored and has Brenda & Van (aka, Mol & Semele) around the outer edge. I may take a pic and post it later.
It felt like a combination of a bad scratch and a sunburn. Not too unbearable. Mine is on my ankle. I love it!! I also had my tongue pierced but let it grow back up because I was getting strange looks from some of my patients parents. I guess they like nice normal nurses!!! What a concept!!!
We are supposed to get Mol's tat done sometime this summer!! Maybe I can take some photos of the in progress work and post em!!!

I have two tats and I do recomend some research on the idea. This is something that will be with you for the rest of your life. You want to make sure it is something you like and that suits your personality. It is VERY expensive to have them removed $2000 per square inch! I've never had one removed but I've seen it done and it looks like it hurt worse then the tat its self. I'm very happy with the ones I have chosen and am pleased with the artist that did them. He used every safty precaution available. All in all I am happy with what I picked and do hope (if you are looking to get one ) you are happy with what you get.

Actually what I was meaning is by example.....
You tatt something of argumental intrest on yourself, later in life you might change your opinion and wish it were different. You might change to be the opposite of what you believed in as a younger person. Not that age really has something to do with it.
How would you explain a harley on your butt to a three year old that just accidently walked in on you getting out of the shower?
I also think that the next generation already has enough and I mean enough, examples of what is accepted and what's not.
The hippies of the 60's and early 70's were all thought of as wrong doers and no good, and were attempted to be concealed from all other eyes by no employments Other words, many had hard times looking and trying for jobs because of their long hair and freedom. One example that sticks out.
I am looking forward to growing old and being a funny old lady. You know, the one with the white hair and funny walk and talks to herself. (The talking will just be for gags, hopefully! :D )

I also love tattoos. I only have one - it's the same as my avatar by my name there, except my tatt is all the same shade of green. Originally, it was a representation of the Christian Holy Trinity, but now I think of it more in terms of Maiden, Mother, Crone. It's on the inside of my left ankle, and it really didn't hurt that badly. It hurt much, much less than I expected it to.
I, too, want to get another one. I will probably design my own because I want it to represent my two daughters. The two and a half year old's name is Emily Rose. I usually call her Rose. The three month old's name is Lily. I'd like to come up with a design of a red rose and a tiger lily (my two favorite flowers). Incidentally, that wasn't why I named my daughters Rose and Lily - that was just coincidence. :)
My biggest dillema in getting tatts is where to put them. I have this thing about being able to see them. If I can't see them, I figure why get them?

I got my first tattoo three years ago after a period of
discovering a great deal about myself. I felt that I had
reached a sort of watershed in my life and had this great
sense of liberation and empowerment. To commemorate the
moment and to remind myself of the freedom and strength
I had while I was young (just in case I became very
conservative as I got older) I had a tattoo done.
It is a black tribal sun, postioned on my hip. I had it done
to represent my strong firey personality. And I haven't
looked back.
I chose something fairly abstract and the reasons I had it
done were very important to me.
Both things I considered in light of the whole "a tattoo is
for life" argument.
I plan to have a winding leaf design put on my left foot
curling down towards my toes from underneath my
ankle bone to represent my feelings towards change and the
path that I have chosen.
I had my nose pierced four years ago and last week I
finally plucked up the courage to have my nipple pierced.
Although as a gel it was more nerve-wracking taking
my top off in front of a strange bloke, than actually being
pierced.
I think the pain and your propensity to faint all depends on
your body, which sadly means you won't know until you try it.
The best website I have found for tattooing and piercing
is www.bme.freeq (I think that is right, if not let me
know and I'll look it up again.)
BE WARNED however that there is a lot of adult content on
this site including genital modifications.
Although the most shocking things are in a strict members
only area.
It is very extensive however.
( Mol and Semele, I hope I'm not breaking any rules
mentioning this site, because parts of it are very explicit, but
I have never found a more reputable site for information
on this subject. )

If anyone lives in the northeast ohio area there is a place in Mentor called Legendary Tattoos....I will NEVER go anywhere else!! My first tattoo, I went to this other place only because I was nervous and it was the only one that would let me take a friend back with me for support! To make a long story short, I got in colored in for the 4th time about 3 months ago!! that 1st place did such a poor job! I had Legendary fill it in and now it looks like it should!! Everyone there is on the younger side (probably around 25 or so) and they are excellent ...they make you feel very comfortable and are very friendly!! (some aren't too bad looking either) :) It is a very clean place and their artwork is amazing......the owner did this demon looking thing on my husband freehand and it's the brightest, coolest looking this I've ever seen! Their piercer is also amazing! She only did 2 of my piercings (I have 5 non-ear piercings and each ear is pierced 8 times) but I wish she had done them all......she did my eyebrow and my tongue and neither of them bled!! I trust no one but Legendary!!
with fainting.....it just depends on you......I know of people who have fainted during piercings and tattoos..and I bairly flinch during them.....
In my opinion, the nervousness of the situation is worse than any of the pain!! I made a huge ordeal about getting my tongue pierced and when she pierced it I was like.."is that it???"
Ozymandias-if you can help me with a design I'd appreciate it....I'm trying to think of something that has to do with Protection....like a protection symbol and the word "protection" written in some other language or something......so far I was thinking in Chinese, Czech, or Theban Script......if you have any ideas...or if anyone has any ideas...your help would be appreciated!!
sorry this is so long...sometimes I just can't stop babbling!! :)

Well, I feel the same way about Sandman Graf/X, here in Clovis, that Elaine feels about Legendary Tattoos. There are always great tattoo shops in every region of the country and a lot of us have our own favorites. There are a lot of reasons why we like a certain shop and each person has their own reasons. Whatever your reason, and wherever you are, if you find a good tattoo artist, keep it, after all this is something you will have on your body for good, and the artist has to be very good and you have to trust him very much.
An important factor, especially these days, is a clean shop and clean or new needles. Sandman always uses new needles!

I have a rather unique tattoo on my ankle of an erect penis--on the night before getting married-a bunch of girlfriends took me to a tatto parlor and I was very drunk--I thought we were at another bar so this guy (not bad looking either) asked me what I wanted. Well from what my tatto is -I bet you may guess what I replied to him--and let me state--his version and MINE were defintely different.
Now I have a reminder to be careful of what you ask for. (LOL)

I've thought about getting a tattoo for a long time now. First, I don't like pain; second, can't decide what I want done; third, don't like pain.
I've heard about something they do with henna (can't remember the name) & it's supposed to last a few months & is painless. You don't get the nice colours you do in a real tattoo but it's something to try to see if you're going to like or not.
Elaine
May 3rd, 2001, 04:49 AM
Henna tattoos are very cool and very painless....what it is is you mix the powder and water and paint on the design...let it dry, wash it and it lasts for a month or so....their fun and you can find them for as little as $5 and as much as $60......depending on how big of a design you want!! I've done them before and they are definately worth the time......check out your mall....any kind of off the wall store has them....spencers, hot topic....ummm....a lot of those kind of things will have them....a lot of the nature stores have them too!!:D with colors....you can get different shades, but mostly it's a brown color of some sort!! depending on what you get and how long you leave it on I think is what it was...it's been awhile since I've done it!!

I only have three so far. Each one of them represents a time in my life. My first, a tribal rose on my ankle, was for my wedding/25th b-day- a marking of my enrty into the adult world, so to speak. I have a Mickey Sorcerer's Apprentice, with my son's name in Mickey's upraised hands. And my third is a tribal armband with my daughter's name. I have had a picture of a Celtic heart on my fride for the past two years. I wanted it around my belly button, but my stomach is just not as flat as it used to be *G*
I think what I would like to do to it is have it enlarged and stretched wider, and place it across my lower back. Since it has to be symbolic to me too, I was thinking of adding in some tiny suns and moons to represent the God and Goddess and my dedication to them. What do you think?
Some thoughts for you who want tats but haven't....
Look for what you want in mags, internet, art books, wherever. Go the the shop with ideas. Try not to pick one off of the wall. I know poeple do that, but don't you want something that is totally yours? I am not putting down people who have flash tats, my husband has two of them too. But I know I wouldn't want to walk down the street and say "Hey, that's my tattoo!" ;)
When you know what you want, go to a few shops and look carefully at their portfolios. If there are other customers, talk to them, check out there work, ask if they have been happy. Like Bluecat said, ask the artists how they clean the needles, watch them take the needle out of the wrapper or they use and autoclave. And rubber gloves!
If you are scared of pain, see if they will run the needle without ink so you can see how it feels. My guy will do that before each tattoo. I know I have a high pain tolerance (two completely unmedicated births:eek: ) and none of my tattoos hurt. But everyone is different. If they are working on you and it becomes unbearable, tell them! They can take a break, let you walk around and get some air if you need.
And last, have fun! MY guy is a blast and I have a great time talking with him. The only thing is don't laugh! I did that and I could have had a big mess, I was lucky he was just filling in.
OK, tattoos is one of those sunbejuects that I could go on and on with (and I just did!) I hope this helps someone.

Merry meet everybody!
Hi there bluecat, you've said you were gonna get a greenman, ain't that druidic? (just wondering).
I have a couple of tatts myself, the one in my right chest is a dreamcatcher, symbolyzing my first love who was a native guy from Canada , and the other one is on my lower back and its a hawk spreading its wings, (it's good fun to make it fly...) I always wanted to get a Moose tattooed, but the artists around here don't know what it looks like so it's more than probable that I'd ended up with a deer or a horse, oh well...
By the way Silverwitch, here's another one for you,ROFLMAO= Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off.(LOL).
XOXOXO (hugs and kisses)
Be Blessed and take care!

Mooseheart, the Greenman is all over, not just the Druids. Here is a pretty useful FAQ URL. It's really part of a larger site, but they do have a strong spirit of what the Greenman is.

thanks a lot bluecat, I've just visited the page you sent me to and it's very beautiful,I guess I was being a bit ignorant about it all, but not having british nor german background it's hard to know of such traditions. It has always intrigued me how cathedrals and churches are full of pagan symbols here in Europe, more in Britain than anywhere else I think....

I am yet another girl with a tatto...and I think they are great. As far as I am concerned, my body is my canvas just as much as any blank canvas can be my canvas.
I got my first tattoo last year after thinking long and hard about it and what I wanted. Its a tiny thing on my left ankle.
I am currently at work on a preliminary design for my second one which will be a celtic raven between my shoulder blades. I have a very basic sketch done (it can be seen here: raven_tattoo_sketch.jpg (http://www.faerie.nu/sarah/misc/raven_tattoo_sketch.jpg) ). It is simply in the idea stage right now, and I plan on taking it to the artist I will be using (another one of those rare gems in the field - a Pagan artist who owns a tattoo/piercing shop here in Toronto called Urban Primitive Body Design (www.urbanprimitive.com (http://www.urbanprimitive.com) ). I am more than certaion he will be able to make it look 100 times better, and bring it alive.
I once heard that once you got a tattoo, you would be addicted for life! I think its true! :)
Cheers :)

OH that is true. I have never wanted a tattoo until last year, when I got my Saturn (still looking for the pic) and as I was walking out, the guy said, "hey see you for the next one."
I am thinking of getting a post horn on my ankle (I am a Pynchon fan)
But not sure yet...
I used to have a piercing below the equator *grin*, but I had to take it out when I got an MRI :( and I couldn;t get the angle right to get it back in
i did video tape the experience though!
The tattoo didn't hurt at all really!

I have two and both are egyptian in nature, one is an ankh (4in.) and the other is the eye of Ra (3in.), i got them to help in my spiritual focus, one on each arm and i want to get another on my chest; maybe a winged globe with a small ankh in the center.

I really like that celtic cross.....now I'm confused on what to get......I think I have decided that I want this next one on the back of my neck......
another word of advice for people thinking about getting them.......DO NOT GET ONE ON YOUR SHIN!!! my husband is over 6ft over 300 lbs with 7 or 8 tattoos (which never fase him...he watches them do it....he really enjoys the process of it instead of the end result) and he was in so much pain!! his face was all scrunched and he was almost in tears at times!!! In my experience (on on thigh, one on arm and one on back) the thigh was most painful........I don't really remember the level of pain on my back....it's been awhile since I had it done origionally....but to the best of my recollection it wasn't bad.....my arm was least painful!! I watched him do it (which I have NEVER been able to do...despite all of my body art I really am chicken!) I was so relaxed I was having trouble staying awake while he was doing it!!
TATTOOS ARE DEFINATELY ADDICTING!!!
Erithan-I think your sketch is beautiful!! I wish I had half of that talent to draw....(getting tattoos would be much easier that way!!) :)
Xois- your, ummmm, lower equator piercing....how was the pain on that.....I've been thinking about getting it done (my piercer is female, thank goddess!) but I'm really chicken....I'm afraid I won't be able to move for a month!!::eek: :D

I got my outer labia pierced. It was awesome! the process released so much endorphin that I was totally high! I like pain anyway, but it really wasn't that bad a all and its only a second...I had just a regular ring with a ball.
The piecer was a guy, and the friend who videoed it was a guy. But although I was shy, it wasn't that bad...it was more uncomfortable when he was drawing the guide lines with a pen. It tickled like hell...
I LOVED MINE and i would never have gotten rid of it, if i didn't have to. I got it becuase I thought a tattoo was too perminant. A peiciering you just take out and you never know. A tattoo (becuase i had never seen anything I really loved) seemed too lasting...but now I love my Saturn tattoo...as soon as a find my pic, i;ll post it...
it was high up, not around the opening of my vagina but near my cliteros. It healed fully in 6 weeks (its one of the fastest healing areas...the belly button is the longest...)
Just make sure you go to a good person!

....yeah my navel took FOREVER to heal....I think longer than usual I think....I had some problems with it.....my tongue healed really quick...only a couple weeks and I could change the bar with no problem.....you may have convinced me to get a "lower equator" piercing:) I know my husband would love it:D I've been wanting to do it for awhile and am just too chicken!! but then again, it took me forever to get the courage to get my tongue done and it was the least painful piercing of all the ones I have.....so I think I might just go for it.....I'm going to get another tattoo next week (it should be next week anyways!!) maybe I'll get a cheaper tattoo and get that done also!! I think it'd be fun...:) thanks Xois!!

When I was fourteen I decided that I would have a tattoo. In my early twenties I finally got my first. I now have two, both are over ten years old. The one on my back is a unicorn with wings, the one on my upper arm is a fairy in a mushroom ring. I have never regreted either of them. Now I plan to have another, in just over a year, to celebrate my first wedding aniversary.

TATTOOS Got a few
Their cool , then you forget about them.
My first tattoo is of the catholic cross with the saying from the bible from Psalms 25:7.
Do not judge me for the sins of my youth but look who I am today.
(notice that I do not use the words god or stuff like that)
Another is of bear teeth and feathers (indian type) for all the shit I have gone through in my life.
And finnally the third..... The three things that you cannot control in life, time( depicted as a hor glass)
fate(depicted as a spiders web)
death(depicted as a cical)
Lot of thought went into these, not just throwing things on my body
Got go go Got to go
Rember your body is sacred, this is where you store your energy
So many things to do so little time in life ENJOY

I don't know if I'll have the guts to videotape it....although it might make it fun!!! I'll let you know......it may be awhile until I go now though!! My husband said we'd go when he got paid...well, he got paid, and went wild with the money and now we don't have the money to do it!! so I'll have to wait til he gets paid again.......(he gets a decent check once a month for this side project he does.....it never shows up on time!!)
I must say that I'm really impressed with the meanings for everyone's tattoos!! very thoughtful.......2 of mine have thought behind it.......the butterfly on my arm though was just cuz I liked it!!! oh well:)
If you put that much thought behind it, you'll never regret it!! good thinking!!:)

I'm planning on getting a tat but I'm one of those that chicken out unless I just do it spur of the moment. I have a very low pain tolerance level so I usually talk myself out of getting one before I get there..... But I do want one and am thinking I might find a friend and drag them along for support. And to keep me from running out there screaming.. <grin> I have a couple ideas for tats but I don't have anything set yet... I want a unicorn for sure. And I want to get a tribal band on my arm with several symbols intertwined into it. But I don't have a set idea yet. I would also like a tat on the other arm of a religious symbol but haven't got that one set yet either. Oh well... I guess when I'm ready I will get one. I need to find some in the Houston area... there are like a million tattoo parlours down here so just finding a good one is the hard part.

When looking for a good tattoo shop you should take a couple of things into consideration.
1> Clean? Is the shop clean and are the tools clean. The shop I go to here autoclaves his tools (not the elec parts ;) but the needle holders and such). And his shop is clean.
2> Needles!!! Do they use NEW needles on every customer! That is very important! You really don't want someone who re-uses needles!!!!
Also check out and see if he or she has books of work they have done, pictures of the actual tattoo on people!
And of course, ASK around!
Hope this helps!

Ooooppsss.... I forgot to ask a couple of questions...
1) I am a little overweight right now but I've started losing weight only a few pounds so far but hopefully it will be more... My question is this... If I get a tattoo right now while at this size if I lose or (Goddess forbid) gain a lot of weight will it affect how the tattoo looks in the future. I don't want to get it unless I know if I manage to lose weight or (Goddess forbid) gain more weight that it won't affect the quality of the work.
2) I will have some extra money at the end of the month(hopefully) and was thinking I might take the opportunity to get one... was wondering if I could do anything to make the pain less before I go... like taking some advil or something. I don't want to get there and get half into it and turn into an embarrassing cry baby or wimp. I know I can't get drunk and although my friend thinks getting stoned is the answer... even if I knew where to get these drugs from I don't want to even try them. So was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on making the pain more bearable and less noticeable.
Okay... one more 3) What is the least sensitive area to get a tattoo. I've heard it is the upper arm. Is that true? If not where is the least painful area to get one. I want to make sure the first one is at least not a scary event and will want to come back for another one... Once I get one I'm sure the second and so forth will not be as bad...
And does any one have suggestions on what to get for my first one... Preferably something with a religious symbol or meaning.

My weight has swung around since I had a tattoo. I was mid weight range when I had mine, have gained loads, and since lost loads. My tattoo seems mainly unaffected.
The least painful areas seem to vary from person to person. I found the one I had on my shoulder hurt less than the top of my arm. But that one goes into the fleshy areas around the side of my arm, and up on to the top of the arm on my shoulder. Try pinching various areas that you are interested in having done.
My tattooist would only tattoo me for one hour at a time, as I apparently went quite white if he went on any longer. So, I advise that you go to a tattooist you can trust to care about your well being. Sorry I cann't be of more help there.

If you are worried about weight issues, avoid the breasts or you will discover how well gravity works! I have mine on the upper arm, but if you are too high you can actually hit a nerve at the crown of the shoulder, but that is really high on your arm, right where the arm meets the shoulder.
Ruthie made a VERY GOOD point about finding a good an responsible tattoo artist, thank you Ruthie :).
There are a couple of places on the underside of your arm that can really get your attention.
Here are a few tips, avoid alcohol, it thins the blood! Avoid aspirin for a few days, it also thins the blood. People think that drugs will dull the pain, they usually do just the opposite and intensify the pain.
I will be getting a large tatt on my back next month (http://www.bluecatsden.com/greenman.htm) and we will do it in sittings. Because of the size and my health problems.
The outline is the only thing that really hurts at all, by the time the artist gets to the color you are mostly numb.
If you have an aversion to pain, avoid your ankles, shins, just any place close to the bone. Fleshy areas are usually less painful. I will have some pain with my hew tattoo because part of it will be along my spine.
check out these links ... the first one is of my tatts ... http://www.bluecatsden.com/tattoo.html and the second one is for the shop I go to http://www.zianet.com/sandman/
Tatts are great and addicting!! Woo-HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

bluecat...I love that design for your back...did you draw that yourself?? it's wonderful!!!
LaDaya- I agree with ruthie...the pain level really depends on the person....you can tell which parts of your body are more sensitive than others....like the back of your upper arm is more sensitive because it doesn't take a lot of everyday damage and abuse...but the front your upper arm would be less painful because it takes more abuse...ie, sun, you scratching it, etc....do not take any drugs or alcohol before hand...if they are a good shop they WILL NOT do the tattoo if you are under the influence of either....mine won't....if they even suspect it, they won't do it!! It's good to eat before...just so you're not sitting on an empty stomach...you might be more prone to passing out if you don't eat first....if it's your 2nd or 3rd one then you know what you can take...but if it's your first you want to take every step possible to make it comfortable for you...make sure the people doing it are willing to let you take a break whenever you need to...that is very important!! I never heard about aspirin thinning your blood...I'm not saying bluecat is wrong...I just never heard it before...I have taken either advil or alieve before 2 of my tattoos and a few of my piercings.....and I never had a problem.....I can't really say if it helped at all....cuz the places that were tattooed were 2 very different places so who knows if it was less pain just because the skin was different or if the advil actually helped...but I didn't have a problem with my blood being thinned....talk to the artist while he's doing it...or if they let you bring a friend, talk to them...or look at a magazine or the stuff on their walls...it helps keep your mind off of what they're doing and away from the pain!!I hope I was of some help...and didn't bore you with the length in the mean time...I just love tattoos and piercings and anything I can do to help other people decide to get them I am happy to do:) have fun and happy tattooing!!:D

Aspirin does thin the blood which why they say it could save your life during a heart attack. But anyway... I was thinking of maybe taking a couple of advil just to help dull the pain. I am pretty sensitive to pain no matter where the area... I also bruise very easily but I want to at least try it once but I'm not sure if I won't talk myself out of it. And I know not to drink or take illegal drugs before hand... I might come out with a wierd tattoo that I didn't want in the first place.... <grin> Anyway, I was thinking either a unicorn or maybe a celtic cross with a pentacle in the center. Those are the two main things I'm thinking of right now... I also like dragons but I would rather wait on that until I know for sure that I will be able to handle getting a tat.... I want my tongue pierced but since I'm a receptionist and have to talk alot I don't think that would go over very well... Oh well....

I would say that the pain is usually very minor, but there is pain.

Tattoos don't hurt? What planet you from? Granted, I have a fat purple rose on one of my ankles (it's a big wide thing ~ the rose, not the ankle), and I experienced more tickling than pain ~~ the pain hit on the top of the flower, when the artist got more into bone and off muscle. But no pain at all? I don't think so.

Hi all..
I just wanted to put my two cents in..
I have one tattoo, I wanted to get it on my 18th birthday. Had the money chickened out. Then when I had the nerve the next year I didnt have the money. LOL.. Finally now I am 21 and I got one. But so did my mother for her 47th birthday.. and her first tattoo. She got a tribal on her arm and I got a medieval saggie symbol on my back (right shoulder area)
Some people go way over board with tattoos but hey it is there way to express themselves. I think it is beautiful even when you end up taking a second glance and go wow.. at the amount of tattoos that you can see.. LOL..
For me, I want tattoos that I can hide if I want and show if I am in the mood..
I also have my tongue pierced and have my ears pierced 3 times each. But also with those.. I can take them out any time I want and put them in and show them as well..
Its all personal preference.. I just think tats are great..
And from a person who spent 3 years scared the pain of a tat was going to be outrageous... I am very happy to say it hardly hurt.. And when the pain really starts they stop for a sec to reink.. So you get a break..
Have fun
Blessed Be

hmmm
well i have extensive tribal glyphs running from my shoulders, down my spine, across my lower back and down the sides of my legs....
they all have different meanings.. from top to bottom the meanings are : Faerie, logic, philospher, powerful, tortured, crying goddess, elegant, astral, faith, individual, purity, protected, power.
They look 22 hours all together (longest session was 8 hours, 4 sessions all together), it hurt, but not as bad except my back which was torture. I've heard the only place that hurts more than your back, or directly over a bone/tendon (my glyph by my knee, where it bends, hurt REALLY bad as well), is your face and head.... it hurt, but i have to have them all redone and touched up to make sure they are super super black... so oh well.. more pain for me.
and yes, in my opinion, they are addictive.
here is a picture of my back... i warn the squeemish that i have needles stuck in my back (this was after a extreme body mod performance, the needles were taken out like 5 minutes later, and i have lots of rather interesting pictutures of me with needles and whatnot sticking out of me from other shows). I'm not wearing too much... but it's just my back and whatnot... so i don't think i'll be tainting anyones minds... or at least i hope not... It's the best RECENT picture of my back tattoos...

hate to say it.. but i didn't pay for a thing.
however... i WAS going out with the guy who did it...
it's hard... cause he still won't let me pay him and i have to get everything done over so it looks extra black... and he still cares about me... *sniffles* and i just got married and my hubby doesn't like the whole idea.... but oh well... life is annoying like that sometimes...
on another note.. my hubby doesn't particularly care for tattoos... so i've compromised and decided to stop where i am rather than get a whole bunch more like i wanted to... so i to will shortly be going through withdrawl...
grrrr.. the IRS is out to get us all!!!! :bad:

do your research... make sure that they show you a RECENT portfolio of photographed work. See if you can find someone who has been tattooed by this person and check the quality of their work.
and although i've seen some tired tattoo artists do some great work... try and go early enough (if it's walk in, like most places, you won't have to make an appointment, unless you are going to a very well known artist, like Paul Boothe --the guy who did one of the Undertaker's sleeves -- )so that you don't catch them right before they're about to get off work and possibly rush things.
don't be afraid to break it up into sessions. After having gone though 8 hour sessions.. i wish i had maybe done three times as many 2 or 3 hour sessions rather than end up with extensive work done over a REALLY long period.
also... something kinda silly... sometimes they'll clip the end of the needle they used (it's a little metal loopy thing that gets attached to the thingie that moves it up and down), and you can like.. save it as a momento (not all artists seem to big on it.. but some will give it to you).
Don't scratch (i did a bit since i'm rather compulsive about it... ) or you'll most likely have to get touch ups and pay for it. If the artist sees that it was their mistake, they don't always charge for minor touch ups. But if you scratched the ink out... it's definitely gonna look different than a holiday (a holiday is when your skin swells up while you are getting something filled in... common with tribal work.. and when it heals up, there is a small space where there is no color).
okay thats enough tattoo ranting for me for now...

Lucidia's right...I can't stress it enough...DO NOT PICK IT!!! My husband did on his 2 of his newest ones and the color is gone and it's pink there...like a scar!!! he had this gorgeous work done and now it's ruined because he was itchy....it's not worth it to scratch...as hard as it is...you loose out on your money, the quality of your tattoo and your time.... when mine itch I just keep rubbing more lotion on it....the cold feels good:) ice sometimes takes away itchiness too....some places will do touchups for free...depending on exactly what's wrong with it....I had the Eeyore on my back done 4 times because the color kept coming out and it was blotchy...the first 3 times I had it done at the same place....but the 4th time is when I had already changed artists and they told me that it was either "A" bad work or "B" the color I had him done in is a lighter blue and they said they've had problems with this particular color before...because it's so light....also, the more times you have it redone, the more it hurts...so it's beneficial to have it done only once:) (btw the guy that messed up my eeyore tattoo ...the origional guy....is now a piercer at the place that I now go to for my tattoos....needless to say, I don't go to him...I wait until the girl that works there is working...I don't trust him....) it's good to remember the names of the artists you go to....so if they move to a different studio you know who they are:) ok...that got to be a little longer than I expected...be safe!!!! I'm done now:)

Some tatoo's I like some I don't. Those I like are usually well made and creatively done. The one's that I don't like are not. The only problem that I have with tatoo's in general is that there permenant. I have been known to chage my mind a few times through the years. Come too think of it another problem I have with tatoos is when I see a young person with a facial tatoo. Wether they like it or not it's with them forever and frequently their minds change too. Oh for the record I never did get one.

One thing I have noticed is that a lot of tattoo artists really need to pay better attention to the photographic quality of their work. I see many online portfolios, and I've seen a few IRLs that the quality of the photos really lacked. Sure you could see that the quality of the ink was wonderful, but sometimes the pic was almost too dark to see, or the scans were not properly color adjusted, etc. If they would just invest a little time, or a few bucks, they could have a stellar portfolio.
Sorry, it is somewhat of a peeve of mine to see somebody's work represented in poor quality, especially since I do a lot of photo retouching in my line of work.
I don't have any tattoos yet, but I've finally designed one that I want. I just need to find the right artist, and get the funds together. I'd also like to learn more about doing the art itself. I used to do a lot of drawings as a teen and younger adult that people often told me should be tattoo art. I'm beginning to wonder if I should pursue it. I'd love to create sacred art on people's skin.

I currently have 4 tattoos...the only thing I can suggest about getting tats is that you should make sure that they have meaning for you. Don't get some random tattoo just because you think it makes you cool or some crap...All of my tattoos have special meaning to me and I don't regret getting any of them. Currently I a working on designing my next tat. Hopefully soon...getting tats is addictive.....

MM Bluecat,
I like the pics of your tatoos, I have quite a few myself. I also have a pentacle tat at the top of my arm.
And I know what you mean about once you have one -you want more!!
So at the end of the day, it's your own opinion that counts and if you would like to have more tatoos done, then go for it!! :-)

I have one tatoo..but I want another one. The one I have right now, is on the backside of my left shoulder. It's a picture of the Lapiz Philosophicus. I found the symbol while studying the "alchemichal tarot" deck. I loved it. It's similar to the world card, in their mythos...and also means that my heart is grounded in nature.
It is an oval, with the four elements represented in it. It is split up into four quadrants, and a heart is in the middle, with a rose growing up through it.
The artist said he'd never seen it before, but he'd like to use it for other people. I said..
"NO WAY"..and tore up the drawing after he was done! LOL

about photography of new tattos:
the reason most photos of new tattos come out badly, is because they take a picture, in a very well lit place, possibly with the flash on, and they have gooey stuff all over your tattoo!
that shiny vaseline like substance causes icky glare, and so the photos aren't always good. sometimes, if they take the picture without the flash, they are too dark.
if you are letting the artist take a picture of the tat you just got.. tell them not to slab on the A&d ointment until AFTER they take the picture if you see they have a lot of shiny glarey pics in their portfolio. They might appreciate the tip.

My tatt artist takes his photos BEFORE he applies the ointment. He uses CORONA and you can't see a darn thing thru that stuff, partly because he lays it on thick.
He also likes to get the pic before the most of the initial redness starts.

I too have 4 tats and I am working on 2 others. Mine are also meaning full and have been placed on my body at meaningful times (initiations etc). I also have piercings. Both ears and my septum. All of which has significance to me and were done to signify special events in my life. Anyhow I slipped off the topic...sorry.
I agree one should be choosey when getting a tat. My first on was 13 years ago. My second one was 10 years later. Between my second and my 3rd tat there was 3 years. My fourth tat was more recent but I knew what I wanted when I got my 3rd one. ( had to wait for money) :)

WOW how many people here have a tattoo!
I wanted one for like forever, and only lately I had the courage to do it, it did cost alot but I could afford it at the time and felt kinda like 'it's not or never'.
Also I gotta say that it DOES hurt, it hurts even alot! Took the guy alot longer to do it coz I kept moving and he had to stop each time.
My tattoo is actually my Avatar, only the pic you see is one Swan made from the draw the artist did, and she kinda colored it (mine's black and white), it's on my shoulder-blade, and it is kinda big, especially for a rather small girl like me :-), it's a winged horse, a pegasus, and I love it very much!
I will show you a pic of it on my back but right now I'm not on my own comp so I can't...

I'm not too partial to tattoos myself. It's not that I think they're hideous or anything, because I have seen some great tattoos in my life. I think they are great on people when they are beautiful and have sentimental value...and sometimes the sentimental value of them makes them beautiful. I agree with the "don't get something unless it has sentimental value" because many many people overdo it, I think, just because they think it'll be cool.
I'm perfectly cool with sentimental tattoos. But I, personally, would choose a different form of art to show my sentiment. :p But I like the pics of the tattoos that I've seen on this thread.
However, since I am only 15 perhaps I'll change my mind some day. But at this point in time, I think that if I ever did change my mind I would get the eye of Horus on my ankle, not because I think it would be cool, but because it is an Egyptian symbol of good luck and my choice of career for the future (besides Actress:p) is Anthropologist and I am also terribly interrested in Archaeology. I love studying the ways of other cultures and haply the Eye of Horus would give me good luck along the journey of life....
What'd'ya think?

Blessings to all. Tattoos should be given a lot of thought. This is a permanent mark on your body for all times. I have a red dragon on my right shoulder symbolizing my strength. I also have Ivy stretching across my rear from hip to hip and it's about 3 inches high and 16 inches wide. Ivy is a good plant for protection. It's very decorative and at the same time I know I'm protected from all I do and don't see.

I would absolutely LOVE a tattoo. A beautiful chain of roses around my upper arm, I think. Too many problems, though...
1) Money
2) Pain
3) Dad's still very Jewish, its a desecration to the body, and I still live at home :P
4) I'm not in shape -- don't want to get a stretched out tattoo, then firm up :)

My tattoo is a band's little mascot guy... I enclosed a pic of a keychain, it has my tat on it. :) The little top hat and shoes.. it does not say Mr. Big (at least yet.)
A funny story about tats... one of my best friends, Chad, went in to get a tattoo when he turned 18. He looked around the shop for HOURS and couldn't figure out what to get. So he sat in the chair and said, "Gimme something cool." He didn't look at the tat at all, just looked away until it was done. Now, he has a little cute fuzzy pink bunny on his upper arm. Needless to say, he hates it when we're at a party and I say, "Chad... lemme see your tattoo!" He'll show me his other one (on the other arm). "No.. I wanna see the bunny!" Then you have all sorts of girls, swarming about, saying "Yeah, lemme see your tattoo!" hehe I'm such a brat.

hmmm.. not sure how I missed this one before, but anyway. I got my first tatt in March this year. I deliberated over it for months & carried the design round for another two to make sure I liked it enough. In the end I went for a small celtic band around my right ankle. Everyone I knew told me it would be painful, but I found the majority of it was fine, the only painful part was when it went over the bone. I'm not sure if I'll get another one, maybe in a couple of years, but I'd definitely recommend it! :)

I have 4 tattoo's and 2 peircings.................1 of the tattoo's is a professional and the other three are home tattoo's...............they are fairly small but the home ones hurt like a son-of-a-b*tch. I found that the area where they did my (professional) tattoo, numbed up before it had a chance to hurt.
If I had the money to spend on It I'd get about 3 or 4 more.

I plan to have a pentagram and my witch name tattooed on my lower back on Samhain next year which will be a year and a day after my self-initiation. I thought this was a fitting tribute to my faith.

I have not been around for a while because life stinks. But I will find a way out of this.
Though I have been in the craft for some time I feel that I am not paying attention to my beliefes, maybe that is why things are not going right.
What happened in N.Y. is to much for me to think about. I am in my 30's, and it all came to me that we had lost alot of the generation that I have grown up in.
What is going on?
Dont mean to change the subject of tattoo's.
