As some of you know, I have a 15 year old who has Autism. I want to share in the great news he has, to give you parents who also have kids with functional disabilities and those who have kids who are unpopular/picked on some hope. I have prayed for this day for 15 years and it has finally come. My son has a REAL date for the 8th Grade Prom tomorrow night!! This is his first year in this particular school district, and it has been a dream come true for us. He and his date are both wearing formal black attire. I am so happy and excited for him, I could burst!! :hearthear
If you all could have seen his tears and felt his pain when kids would laugh at him and everyone would call him gay (because of the way he walks and holds his body, due to his autism);and when he would cry to me, "Mom, why doesn't anybody like me? Why do I have to be different? Why am I the only guy that doesn't have a girlfriend? Why does everyone pick on me & hate me? etc."--then you would know why this means so much. (And, why we took him to a new school district.) I've tried to instill in him that he is regal and has the peaceful mannerisms of a prince , and that it will take a real classy girl to recognize his sophisticated style. Apparently, it worked. He's been feeling better about himself, and a classy girl finally recognized her "prince" Anyway, parents...just wanted to give you and yours some hope. :hugz:

I have autistic friends both the same age and younger then me. My best friend has autistim and aspergus and his 7 yer old brother has ADHD, autism and aspergus, they both been diagnosed with depression and been highly suicidal but there the best friends a person could have.
It makes us so *mad* when people tease or stare at others because they are different. My mother has a guide dog and you she see the looks that she gets, some people find it hard to talk to her because 'they dont know what to say'. She a human being, talk to her like one!
I've worked with autistic children in the past and they are an absolute delight to work with.
I hoep your son has a wonderful time and that he doesnt get picked on. You just have remind yourself when that happens that you are better then the person that is bullying you because you would never stoop down to their level as to bullying someone who is different.

So, I would like to tell you that my son and his date had a wonderful time tonight. It was a dream night for most of the kids who went to the prom. There were boys dressed in tuxedos and girls in long evening gowns. It was really beautiful. We got pictures, wouldn't have missed out on that!! Thank you again and good night. I'm going to bed now. It's been a hell of a day. I'm pooped!! :falloffch

I'm so glad it went well. :steppy: Don't they just look so handsome in their tuxes, and the ladies in their gowns are beautiful!

I am so happy to hear your story. In fact, your thread was a deciding factor in my decision
to join MW. I also have a son with Autism. He is 4 years old. He is "high functioning".
We're at the beginning of our journey together. It does my heart good to hear your son
overcoming this challenge. I share in your joy.

Hi. I've just come back to this thread. I thought it was dead. Thank you, CosmicWhispers and Queen, for your thoughtful words. I have smiled for the first time today because of you (and it's already the next day--2:30am here). Yes, he is very proud and floating on _cloud9_ !! She is his dreamgirl and he is crazy about her. He heard a rumor at school Thursday that she wants to go out with him again. It is the cutest thing watching him all dreamy-eyed. He is a most handsome little 'loverboy'. :hearthear

That is so great. It's so hard to be picked on for something you have absolutely no control over. It aggrivates me, how astonishingly cruel kids can be! I hope he has a blast at the Prom !

I'm so happy for him. I know what it can be like to be ridiculed and picked on and snubbed by other kids. Kids can be horrible. And this sort of thing can help his self confidence so he no longer cares about those fools :) All my best wishes to you and your son Melantha Rose :)
