I am watching an old fashioned war movie that is in German. I am reading the english text at the bottom of the screen. Does anyone here read movies or am I the only one? :rollingla

Yeah, in live action movies, I'd rather read the subtitles than dub it. But in anime, I'd rather just dub.

I do. Dubbing always sounds really stupid to me, so I prefer the subtitles. I watch a lot french movies for class and just for entertainment.

I watch tons of movies with subtitles. They trasnslation is usually a lot better. Plus it has the original voices. Some dubbed movies are really off.

i don't like reading subtitles, but its better than the alternative, which is dubbing. dubbing is just aweful... i watch a few foreign films, usually french films. the only problem i have with subtitles is that it takes the focus off the visual because you have to concentrate on the text. My favorite french film is Amelie, and that has so many fun things to look for, its no fun with subtitles. I guess my only alternative is learning all the languages...

I'm hearing impaired and I read closed captioning all the time. I'm at the point where I can read and watch t.v. or the movie at the same time without missing anything. Pretty damned nifty. :bouncysmi

I watch subtitled anime, but it's getting to the point where I don't really need them.

Whenever possible I go for the subtitled rather than dubbed editions. WIth DVDs now being the norm, this is usually quite easy, because you get to choose from original sound tracked, dubbed sound track, and an assortment of subtitle styles.
It used to take me a while to find the foreign movies I wanted in the original languages ... but I did manage to get copies of Das Boot and M on VHS, both in German with Subtitles.
The nice thing about DVD is that I can also turn the subtitles off, and try to improve my language skills.
One movie that I recently got in an original language edition was "Mad Max" ... yep, they thought that Americans wouldn't understand Australian and up until recently the only editions we had here were the overdubs.
In the fun with subtitles categorie ... some filmmakers are now including a "gee whiz this is interesting stuff" trivia/production notes set of subtitles. So far I've found them on the newest release of The Fith Element, and also Chronicles of Riddick. They are often very amusing.

you know one of the most interesting movies I ever watched was Shogun, the mini-series... and the producers made a ballsy decision to not subtitle the japanese in that movie. Everyone speaks their native language and it is for the audience to figure out. There are english speaking actors in it, for those who are unfamiliar with it. But the main character doesn't start out knowing the Japanese language and must learn it as he goes along. In a way, the movie takes up along with him. It's really kewl.

It drives me crazy when people are like, "I hate subtitles, they distract me from the movie." I'm like... okay, well, obviously you aren't that interested in what they're saying, so why don't we just stupidly dub it for you and send you on your merry way?
A ten year old has the reading comprehension to read the sentance and still look up in time to see the whole scene. (Assuming of course that said person's attention is unable to be focused on more than one part of the screen at once, which is what seems to be the main issue with that complaint.)

I only read subtitles on anime.
Well, most anime, some (like outlaw star) have REALLY good dubs, so those I might watch with the dub. Usuallly though the subtitles are more in depth, and more accurate.
hilary.

Hey, sometimes the subtitles are hard to see. Like when somebody wearing a light color is standing in the front of the frame. And especially if you have a tiny little tv up on a high shelf like me. ;) But I dislike dubs myself (unless it's Godzilla or Gamara -- then it makes it funnier).
I had a friend who lived in Switzerland for awhile and she said that in the movie theatres where she lived there were at least three different subtitled languages on the screen at once. She said it took up about 1/3 of the picture!!
One of my favorite films to read is Kukushka because there are three different languages being used in the film and none of the characters can understand each other. But I can because I've got the subtitles. Sweet! :D

Dubs of anime are usually not as bad, since all animation is dubbed.
If you're that distracted by subtitles vs. scenes, just consider it an excuse to watch the movie more than once.
Or, if you're able to tolerate it during the first viewing of a film, that's what your rewind button is for. Watch the bit you think you missed something in over. This is not usually a good option when viewing with anyone, but good for watching things alone.

I prefer subtitles in most movies I've seen. I saw "Life Is Beautiful" and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" in their original languages and they were beautiful, intelligent movies, but the dubbed versions sounded idiotic!
On the other hand, if someone is a slow reader they will probably not like subtitles.

I attempted to watch the Japanese version of The Ring 2 and managed 15 mins, granted I was tired, but I mainly gave up because I knew i wouldn't be able to read the subtitles while I was being scared out of my wit! :rotfl:

No I can't cope with subtitles. There are 2 things I can do, watch what's happening on the screen, and read the subtitles at the bottom, but not both at the same time. I'm not a particularly fast reader either so i'll often miss bits and after 15 minutes I'm usually confused beyond all hope.
