I've tried to learn about this goddess before, but have come up short. I know very little about her other than she's Mayan. I've read that she's the goddess of the earth and moon, patroness of pregnant women, and that she invented weaving. But I've also read that she's depicted with a snake as a headband and a skirt embroidered with crossbones, which I think shows a chthonic nature.

I know her as a goddess of midwifery- childbirth and pregnancy, medicine, weaving, rain, floods, moon, rainbow.

I think you're confusing her with Coatlicue, wich is the mother of the gods in the aztec pantheon, sometimes called tonantzin (our mother). While Ixchel is, as you say first, godess of earth and moon, patroness of pregnant women, abd she also cast the storms and whirlwinds.

Here are two pictures: the statue is Coatlicue, the drawing is Ixchel.

Ouch! I read wrong, sorry!:ugh:
I was confused, because I see Coatlicue closer to the Mythos than Ixchel.
Well, now you know about two goddesses.
