Society in this country is depressing. This post is more a description of our trip to 6 Flags in St Louis, MO yesterday & a vent. And I'm sure atleast someone will be offended by something in this post so you can post your beef or not I could care less, it will not rile or get a response from me. I would like to know if others feel the same way & have a beneficial discussion.
Yesterday my husband & I got a day away from our kids to have fun & get a break from them. We did a fund raiser for his unit where the military goes and works a day at 6 Flags & the money goes to the unit. A volunteer thing. Well we worked making funnel cakes for 6 hours, which wasn't too bad other than grouchy customers. When we finished we rode some rides, bought our 2 girls each a gift, got ice cream and came home.
We will never be going back to this 6 Flags ever again. I would never take my girls there either. When we were checking in to human resources before work we had to sit and listen to some of their teenybopper thug employees with their trashy mouths yelling at people walking by and talking crap like their going to stomp someones ass for glancing their way, 1 female inparticular. I sure hope some higher up adult told her to shut her face & she got a huge warning. Who wants to go to a park and listen to the employees like that. Now anyone whose been to St Louis knows it has a decent size african american population, that's what most of the employees were. No biggie.
The park itself was trashed with very poor upkeep. I was really suprised to see how may visitors were a perfect description of the title of this tread. So many unsupervised kids school trips or not running wild. I got ran into by one girl who was running, that I would have loved to have shoved for slamming into me. Inconsiderate shit. And it was gospel day which we did not know till we got there. While standing in line I saw more people who fit the description of being white trash, teenagers dressed like tramps, guys who look liked they just finish working under their beat up truck, filthy people who looked like they should have spent their money on shoes & a shower instead of park admission, dope dealers, vandalizers, & grossely obeese. I'm so glad our admission for the volunteer work was free.
Now I think I've painted a pretty descriptive and accurate picture. I want to know who enjoys looking at this because I surely do not. Lower class or not (if that's the case)........I don't care what peoples excuses are for this and as far as I'm concerned their aren't any legitimate enough for me to buy. If you can afford a ticket & meals in a theme park then you can afford to take a shower, brush your teeth & your hair & wear matching clothes without holes in them. Then do everyone else a favor & speak decent enough "clean" English for the people who have to listen to you. Save that crap for home. If you are lower class then there is a difference between "being" & "acting" lower class. I have nothing against anyone who is for that matter, have been myself. Their was one foreign family I saw in line with us (possibly German I think) & I hope they don't think "this" is the bragged about America they've heard so much about.
I have never been to a theme park this bad in my life. I have notice "some" not all pathetic people in this part of Missouri since having to live here & they are proud of themselves for some nasty reason. The dirty south is not just a phrase, I've lived in the south (Tennessee, North Carolina & here in MO all my life except 3 yrs in Montana which isn't much better) & am sick of parts of it. We may not be any higher than lowermiddle class but by gods we carry & conduct ourselves in a proper, educated manner.

I thought you had made some valid observations and good points until you got to the part(s) where you said "lower class" and "dirty south" then I realized you are just a snob. For you to generalize about people with little money and who happen to live or be born in the South just makes you ignorant and arrogant. Lower class doesn't have to mean no class; and, from having been born in the South and lived there for quite awhile I can tell you that I, for the most part, never met real trashy people until I moved alot farther north.

Living down here in the "dirty south" I think you were just unfortunate enough to catch a large specimen of some of the worst people down here. Note, worst. I lived most of my life in Massachusetts and had the same mental image that all southerners were dirty tobacco-chewing rednecks who had never read anything but the Bible.
Then I opened my eyes when I came here and realized that what you are describing is only a small portion of the south. Most people I've run into down here are actually well-spoken, polite, and very friendly. It's actually very rarely that I run into somebody where I think "Wow, what an a**hole" and that's usually only when I'm driving.
As a Northerner I can understand where you're coming from. They do hold a very one-sided stereotyped view of Southerners, but you have to learn to see through that. I think the more accurate view of Southerners is one of very polite, clean cut cowboys (most of the time minus the cowboy garb :) )
I do wish you would come down here and see some true Southerns in their natural habitat. True, there are still those who are obese and messy and badly dressed and foul-mouthed, but you'll find people like that wherever you go.

I am an ex-military wife and have travelled and lived extensively over places in the US.
I very much prefer the South. I've never met a more friendlier and hospitable bunch. There is truth to the saying, "Southern Hospitality".
I've visited many theme parks and also see many different people from all walks of life. I go to enjoy the rides and being with my family. I get bumped into by kids not paying attention. They're having fun. I'm having fun. I don't seem to get too hung up on what people wear. But that's just me. I guess it is indeed all a matter of perception. I'm sorry you didn't get to enjoy yourself due to all the stresses that were around. Perhaps another time you might. Oh...I would write to the management of the Six Flags and suggest that they might want to step up their cleaning and upkeep. They are a business after all, and I'm sure they would want to hear what their consumers are saying.

I've lived in the north and south. The behavior that was described I've seen in both areas. People are people. Not that I condone nasty attitudes and poor inconsiderate behavior, the name-calling is what I do not agree with in this post.

I think the quote you have says it all Karma, "Never take yourself too seriously, 'cause if you are, you're taking all the fun out of life"-Kenny Chesney
There will always be people "above" us whose going to consider someone below them and so on...it's a never ending chain...if we think that way about other people..imagine what other people must be thinking of us...if we go into the world trashing others because they are not us or dress like us or talk like us...how does that make us better than them..oh yeah..we go around and say we're good people then we trash other people...maybe they can't afford nicer clothes then us...does that make us better than "them"...if what they wear is such an issue...go to them and take them shopping so they can dress the way WE want them..or better yet...forget about being individuals.....I say we find the ultimate rich person and be an exact acting clone....and while we at it..let's scratch off..give us your poor, your cold and hungry off of the Statue of Liberty and demand that only those who dress in high fashion and talk with a clip accent are allow to live in the US.

Yes there are a lot of people in the south who are very friendly and nothing of the sort I mentioned. I've traveled the world too & like the others say there are people like that everywhere not just here. I was using here as a loose example I guess because that's where I've lived. I just hate that even foreigners come here & I hope they don't go back with this idea of the U.S. ya know. We did enjoy ourselves for the most part and still had a good day away from the kids it was just not as enjoyable as usual.
Writing the management is a good idea, I'll look it up on their web site and see where I need to start when it comes to those employees I mentioned. Thanks.

I'm really sorry and I'm just making a serious comment, no pun or argument, but don't you think the title for this thread is bad taste if not extreme..I'm sorry but what's next..ethnic slander and racist slander too?? Maybe something alternate like "Bad day at the theme park" would have been better if not less attacking...
It's one thing to have a gripe..but honestly..that's just...not really a classful thing in itself to use as a title for a thread...and I'm not even making a pun....it's one thing to want to get attention to a thread..but that's really low taste there...
I was going over the thread to read a reply and this is honestly the first time I really really notice the title for the thread...I can see if the title was done in good humor..but it's just :awwman:
A lot of those people at that themepark might be spouses or family who are in the military...I know a lot of women in the military who are barely making ends meet..who are lucky to buy new clothes for themselves or their kids and are on welfare while their spouses (this goes for husbands whose wives are in teh military) are busting their butts, to defend us, to defend freedom and not being paid enough to be shot at, verbally attacked at, and well..just be disrespected.
You're in the military too...is this how you talk to other fellow spouses who maynot be able to afford new clothes from Dillards or wherever..who live paycheck to paycheck..who live for their foodstamps and hand me downs....
God forbid one of their kids wear's an outfit that is 5 plus years old...does that make them white trash too..
For some..those very same family whom you attack...who can't afford to go to college to be "well educated and speak just as good"...go into the military, risk their lives for their family to have a better life then what they have...
I honestly would like proof that everyone in the military has lineage going to the Rockerfellers or maybe whose dad is Bill Gates....
Who is in the military who might be trying to get out of welfare and once had holes in their clothes and didn't speak "Good" English...who in the military has holes in their clothes right now because it was more important to protect others to have that choices to have holes in their clothes or speak good or bad English if they want to...
I dare to find someone in the military who maybe don't speak good english because it's more imporant to have that freedom to speak however they want then let someone else judge for thme....

You know there;s plenty of people like that in New York - most of the people at my college listen to rap music, curse like it's the only words they know, and dress in "thug" fashions. It's not my style, but I'm not about to call them ghetto scum. That's just plain rude, and really shows that you don't have a single ounce of class.
Sometimes people forget to bathe. It's gross and it skeeves me out, but that's not an excuse to be downright vulgar about it.

I'm not going to rant about how snobby you sound, I'm sure the others will lay into you well enough. I would just like to point out that not everything you have described is limited to the lower class. If you want to talk about girls walking around trashy and without any class, all I need point out is Brittney Spears, who is Upper-middle class, from the south I might add, and the queen of scum herself, Paris Hilton.

I don't like to look at people that look or act like that really either. People can do what they want though and I don't really care; I'm just not going to hang around them. Sometimes I'm stuck in situations like that though. I just deal until it's over and then move on. I've never been lower then middle and upper-middle class so I'm not going to deny that I've been 'conditioned' to think like this.

My ex and I lived in a home worth quarter a million dollars but when we went out..you wouldn't think so because we didn't dress "the part"...I worked with people who couldn't afford a 25.00 pair of jeans much less 50.00 but I didn't let them know that at night..I hosted dinner parties with my ex for VP's from other countries and that I would stay in first class hotels and wore gowns that cost more than my paycheck (worked in a computer lab in a college)....
I was taught...you don't flaunt what you have because then you dropped yourself to the level of mud...if you wnat to be in mud..fine...but if you want respect...you start by showing it to others....

After living in the west most of my life, I just moved to Missouri. I'm in the throes of culture shock as we speak.
I am a landlord. It is my job to provide clean safe and comfortable housing to hundreds of families, none of whom share my faith. It is a challenge.
I have tenants who look like they would fit on Married With Children, others Three's Company and even others Jerry Springer. Different places, even within the same town, attract different folks. People like to congregate with like-minded people. Strange as it is, my apartment buildings will be filled with people who are pretty much similar in lifestyle, and the building next door will have a completely different lifestyle dynamic. Within the building, there is 'harmony', but between the buildings, there is strife. I dunno if this is just a 'big city' phenomenon or not. I'm sure other landlords have seem other things. We're a diverse bunch, us humanity...
Through this, I've learned many things. One of those things is this- When I see a people, I see a faith.
You saw a people; you saw a faith. You then judged these people; you judged this faith.
I checked what immediate profile and linked data you provided, and I was unable to discern whatfaith you specifically practice, if any. I'm suspecting a form of Wicca, but I'm not sure.
If I am correct, this judgment does not sound like the Rede, nor any other source I can conjure at the moment. Indeed, this is pure intolerance- You came, you saw, you snubbed. These Six Flag folks may not be the people I prefer to hang out with either, but they are my tenants, or may be. I have the honor of respecting them, that they may also respect me. Tell me, do those folks at that park respect you?

Just like my fiance - his family is rich, really rich. But, you would never know. Acually, I didn't even know until about 4 months into our relationship. Chad hates to go clothes shopping and prefers comfort over fashion and isn't interested in projecting to the world that he has money. He's got drawers full of tee-shirts from high school that he wears and won't throw away. They still fit, so there's no reason to get new ones, lol.
Me on the other hand, I like my fashion. I do a lot of shopping at places like JCrew, but I don't start telling myself that the people who shop at Walmart and Target for clothes are white trash. Hey, Target has some nice stuff.
It's hard to always judge on an individual basis, but at the same time it's possible to pass judgement without being insulting and judgemental.

My husband and I were raised that it doesn't matter who you are, where your from, or how much your worth but you just do not go out in public acting or looking like that. And it has nothing to do with anything fashion related, hell I don't follow fashion. Just common decency. Yeah my post was blunt but that's how it came to me so thats how I wrote it why sugar coat it. No harm in actually saying what lots of people think.

Note: I hope I do this right so the quote thingies all work out correctly :)
No biggie.
I got ran into by one girl who was running, that I would have loved to have shoved for slamming into me. Inconsiderate shit.
And it was gospel day which we did not know till we got there.
While standing in line I saw more people who fit the description of being white trash, teenagers dressed like tramps, guys who look liked they just finish working under their beat up truck, filthy people who looked like they should have spent their money on shoes & a shower instead of park admission,
dope dealers, vandalizers, & grossely obeese..
I'm always up for a beneficial discussion. But is it only beneficial if we agree with you? You say if we don't agree you will not respond so how is that a discussion?
True - employees need to be trained to be polite and cussing and yelling at people is completely out of line.
How old was the girl who ran into you? There is a huge difference between 5 and 15.
If the fact that there are a lot of African Americans is no biggie, why did you mention it? I'm afraid I did not see the point to this part. Also the gospel day? what is the issue there? I am not christian, but they are usually not dirtier or white trashier than others in general.
So, the part about dope pushers, vandelizers and grossely obeese: (by the way if you are going to comment negatively on people's education and speaking right you might want to get a dictionary or thesarus - just a hint - dope is slang it should be "drug" vandelizers is not a word dear - it is vandals - and the word is morbidly and obese)
Note: I never correct a person's grammer, spelling etc. unless they are setting themselves to be better than others and making a claim based on that assumption.
So, now to the point of that sentence:
Wow I'm glad we cleared that up. So what you are saying is that it is criminal to be fat and against the law? So, we should round up all the fat people right? Maybe concentration camps. You remember those don't you? Hitler rounded up all the undesirables like Jews, gays, and anyone he felt like and locked them up. Of course nothing like that could happen in the good ol' U.S. of A - oh wait........ it did. Seriously are you really comparing drug dealers with fat people?
Plus St. Louis is not really south. I know that point can be argued.
Honestly, I know that was just a rant and you had a difficult day, probably tired, etc. However, did you really intend to sound "better than thou?" You know when I want to offend a large group of people I just say:
NUKE THE GAY WHALES FOR JESUS ! ! ! It either gets a laugh, or pisses everyone off.

No I do not consider myself Wiccan. No I don't know or care if they respect me or not, didn't speak to any of them except the ones I served food to. I snub no one I meet.

Just because you don't like the way people dress or look doesn't give you the right to call them scum and trash. There are some cultures who don't have the same ideas about hygeine that Americans do. Does that mean that everytime I see someone of French decent I'm going to call him a filthy smelly poodle?
And, not everyone has the courtesy to look around and make sure there are no small children present before they say something that others think are inappropriate. It sucks, but you can't expect everyone in the world to look for children to determine how they speak and what they say. Any public place you go is like this, and if you want to avoid it, you'll have to shelter your children from the outside world.
And, there's a difference between being blunt and not sugar coatng, and being tactless and insulting. The way you describe these people I was very surprised that I didn't see any racial slurs thrown in there. You want to complain about appropriateness....well, if this is the way you judge and describe people then I don't think you have a place to tell us that the behavior of others is inappropriate.

guys who look liked they just finish working under their beat up truck, filthy people who looked like they should have spent their money on shoes & a shower instead of park admission,
wear matching clothes without holes in them.
.
hummm you know I have always thought myself a good judge of character. Boy was I wrong. I had thought of you as a nice and smart person from your previous post here.
this is nothen but Plain out snobery plain and simple.
So what if a guy looks like he has been working on his truck all day, it is his right to have some relaxation as well, Did they ask you to socialize with them?? you just did not like being in the same proxemity with then. I work on cars and beat up old trucks as you put them. What would you do if you had broke down when you got ready to leave and one of those people you called dirty offered to help you? Would you have refused because of their looks? If these people did not do what they do you would probally be walking lady.
They did not ask to come In to your home they were at a public place to have a good time if you dont like what you see dont go the problem is your's not their's. And you have such a problem with people not wearing matching clothes??What is that??!!! Plain snobery in the highest level. But hey what do you care this post is from someone living in the Dirty South as you call it and we are some of the kindest most helpfull people you we ever meet even though you may not like how we all look.

yes more like 15

Just an observation & added detail but we agree piping in religious music at a public amusent park is rude it should be left to a benefit or private show. They think everyone wants to hear it and they could be wrong. I personally do not care for it.

I'm sorry, but how does being obese, even grossly obese, put a person on the level of drug dealers and vandals, unless they actually are one of those two things.
And how can you tell a drug dealer or a vandal from a person who simply cannot afford buy new clothing? I would venture to guess that a drug dealer would probably be wearing somewhat better clothing, unless they too are addicted to the very drug they are selling.
I myself am considered obese and I suppose that there are people out there that look at me and consider me to be a lazy, disgusting slob. Not true. I work hard all week as an xray tech, a moderately physically demanding job, then I volunteer in a barn working with horses on the weekend. Unfortunately, I still have not conquered my love of food. But people have the misconception that all I do is sit and watch the TV or sit in front of the computer.
All I am saying is that we don't know what circumstances have led a person to appear as they do. Perhaps they legitimately cannot afford to buy new clothes, though if they are employees of the theme park one would assume that the theme park would provide them with work clothes. And just maybe, if they cannot afford to buy new clothes, they are ashamed of the way they look and wish things were different for them. Another thought is that they could be depressed and have difficulty caring what they look like.
I know its hard sometimes, I admit sometimes I feel the same as you in some circumstances. I often wish I had a T-shirt that says "I see stupid people" because of the people I encounter every day at my job. But I TRY to be understanding of them because they have their stories too.
Bright Blessings,
EC

They think everyone wants to hear it and they could be wrong. I personally do not care for it. They have these things on college campuses all the time too. They paid to be there, and if it really bugged you honestly you could have looked to see what else was going on that day and chose to go a different time. They have as much of a right to be there as you, whether or not you enjoy the music.
No I didn't but people can take my post however they wish & jump to whatever assumption they want. Well, whether or not you care, your attitude isn't exactly helping the opinion of you based on those assumptions. And, if you don't care what others think of you, why waste the energy passing horrendously tactless judgement on others based on assumptions?

I believe you'll find people like this everywhere in the world, either in small or large amounts.
I also believe it has nothing to do with Socio-Economical Status. I've known some very uneducated people who are "high class".
In my opinion, if someone claims to be educated and proper it should show in everything they do and/or say.. not just in certain situations.
