View Full Version : Cakes and Wine?

I've been thinking alot about this lately.

As an age of under, I can't really drink wine (and don't particularly like it) and usually substitute a fruit juice of some kind. For cakes, I love crosissants with their half moon shape and yumminess.

However, I was thinking about substituting in something more tailored to the certain god or goddess form I was using. Am currently working with Hermes, and was considering fried pita and olive oil instead of my usual.

I was just wondering what other people did for cakes and wine and wether they had any thoughts about the subject.

Greetings!
I was once in your shoes, and actually still am. I always substitute actual fruit juice (not minute maid or something like that) for the whine, and usually any bread for the cakes. Remember, one great thing about paganism - you sorta can do what you want ritual wise, harm none!

I like the idea of tailoring your ritual food to the deity. Pita and olive oil (maybe with some garlic and crushed red pepper for flavour) and good old grape juice sounds good to me  !

I concur! It's a wonderful, and delicious, idea! I use whatever seems appropriate. Sometimes I use challah and leftover shabbat wine for cakes and wine. Sometimes I use water and some celery. Whatever. The symbolism is what counts. :)

Yes! Thats very good bread too! :D

I think it's a marvelous idea! lol! I just turned 18 (I'm an adult here in Canada, so I can now drink as much wine as I want ;) ) and I never really liked wine either, so fuit juice is always a #1! I do really agree with the fact that symbolism is really what counts and I think that the fact that you stopped and thought of it really means a lot and will make your ritual even more personnal and powerful! :)

I once went to a ritual where they used these amazing fudge brownie cookies and milk in the chalice which I think has sufficent symbolism. Oh my goodness I need to find thoes cookies again.

I loved the Croning Ritual I attended last year where the 'athame' was an extra long tootsie roll, and for 'cakes and ale' we had brownies and chocolate liquor. Yummy.

I use anything, and I mean ANYTHING I fancy eating and drinking at that particular time, lol. Usually the cakes and wine is my dinner and a cup of tea! Only sabbat rituals are an exception, I try to use appropriate food and drink there - like something dairy for Brigid, elderflower wine on Ostara, mead for Lughnasad and Mabon... and so on.

But then, I'm neither Wiccan nor very strict about rules anyway, so...

Hugs!!

I usually use biscuits of some sort and apple juice in ritual.
