I would -so long as it was years past the date, it didnt look bad or taste bad and especially if it original had a long date on. Things don't stay fresh for months get to a set date and go bad in moments.
For the compainies own safety (from being sued etc) the dates have to be within a range they know for certain it won't go off in, dosn't mean it will be off the day after....then again some things have sell by dates and use by dates

They should just make food self destruct on the expiration date and it'll take a lot of the guesswork out...It depends on the item...if it's dry...I'll take a chance...if it's not..then well..you know

Meat, definately not. Dairy, I would go a few days past if it smells ok. Eggs, I will go past the sell by date longer, I read somewhere that you can test eggs but putting them in water and if one end floats to the top, that it is no good. I haven't gotten sick yet!

I usually will eat something a week past its sell by date. In my head, that is how long it should take someone to eat or drink something after its sell by date. LOL.

For me, it depends. I just think that "sell-by" usually means it's the day they want it off the shelves. If it doesn't have any funky coloration to it, or isn't growing hair, it's alright. I never use milk past its sell-by date though, mainly because I don't drink milk--the baby does.
I've used eggs that were about 4 days past their date. They were fine, and great in egg salad!
Depends on what it is, I guess.

Meat, definately not.
I should add that if the meat was frozen by the sell by date, then I will still use it.

I think meat is one of those items...so long it's frozen its edible

Yeah, if it's frozen meat then it's okay. Dairy, if it smells okay then there's no real problem. (We've eaten yoghurt that's maybe a week or more over it's due date. :2G: And we haven't gotten sick from it yet.)

I buy quite alot of food past it's sell by date, I usually freeze it. I have been known to eat yogats past their use by dates, only by a couple of days though.

Depends on the food really.
Frozen meats, they're good for years at a time. (I still have deer in my freezer from 3 years ago. It's still good as the day I got it.)
Meats that have been in the fridge usually get tossed a week after the date.
Dairies usually last about 2 weeks after the sale date, unless frozen.
Boxed goods last several months past the sell date.
Canned goods last a couple of years past their sale dates. (Thinking about it, this goes for pretty much anything that's been vacuumed sealed.)

for meats I wouldnt unless it was frozen before or by sell date. Milk i will drink past sell by date as long as it smells and tastes ok. I have to check the bags of salad good before i buy them to,i've gotten a few that were wilted.

Well, I put Yes of course before I noticed the "depends"--it depends. Milk we always drink past code, but of course we test it first, lol.
My hubby says that drugs are good up to a year past code...so of course we use those as well.

Nope. I'm weird about it, and won't eat anything past "the date".

I always eat things for 7 days after the sell date, I'll go longer if it still smells all right.
