Again we see the lemnisate (sp?-infinity symbol) above the young lady's head. To me this is a connection to all powers that be. She is also wearing a garland which leads to be believe that she is a nurturer, and in tune with nature. Her gown is pretty plain so I don't think she's vein or conceited. Pretty easy going.

She's holding the lion's head as if trying to keep it closed...but doing so gently, subdueing him, as his tail indicates (tucked between his legs). This represents patience and strength to me. The way that she's holding his head indicates compassion. As her nature would indicate. Funny how in the cards we actually get to 'judge the book by the cover!".....make judgements by appearances! :P

They look as though they are giants against the landscape, so I think a bigger issue is at work here. Could it be strength of character and moral strength?

:D

Wow where are all the replies to this one???

Well I see the gentleness of the girl, the natural earthy feel with all the flowers, kind of symbolic of the lion and the lamb christians refer to.

Strength, quiet conifidence, kindness, gentle firmness.... balance of nature, the power of spiritual/woman/gentleness over physical/man/violence. I guess that pretty much sums it up for me.

Hi all!
Above her head there's the double helix.Beginning/ending,DNA which makes up all life.So Strength in life.
The lion, she subdues him.Patience over ferocity. So Strength in patience.Yet the ferocity is part of it too.

Great takes all :)
~ The lion is under her spell, she is so graceful, gentle and at peace and yet she can control this huge dangerous beast.
I think the lion represents hurdles and difficulties that we come up against in every day life - she is using her mental (not physical) and womanly strength to over come these problems and master the lion.

Believe in your own strength and powers!

I agree with you all in that patience is a strong influence for strength. To be truly strong you have to be patient. Any one who has children or who has even been around children for any length of time knows this all too well!

In gently subdoing the lion I think she gains strength from him and vice versa.

What other feelings do you have on this card?

In readings I usually deduce that we need to look within our self to find the needed strength to overcome some obstacle. We have the power to handle any and all situations if we turn to our inner emotions and power.

She's gotta be a mother-goddess. Who else could control a LEO?

I see her holding onto the cub with a yellow ribbon. The Cub has his paw on a snake, but
he is not hurting the snake either. The cub is licking her face. At our house we call this bathing.
So the cub is cleaning her face, so this seems to be that she may be mothering the cub. The snake is being controlled by the cub because it cannot reach the girl. And the girl is controlling the lion, but the controlling is being done rather easily by both. The card could stand for having control over any given situation. Strength, but with a gentle hand. Understand?

DESCRIPTION

Usually we think of strength in physical terms - big arms, powerful legs - but there is also inner strength. Inner strength comes from an exercise of the heart muscle. It is perseverance, courage, resolve and composure - qualities that help us endure when times are tough. In the past, a person with inner strength was commonly said to have character; he or she could be counted on in the darkest moments. Card 8 represents this energy of quiet determination. Strength is not a flashy card, but one that is solid and reliable.

Card 8 also represents patience and compassion. Getting angry is easy when events turn sour, but dealing calmly with frustration takes great strength. So does accepting others and forgiving mistakes. We need strength to mold situations softly. The Chariot controls through mastery and authority. Card 8 is more subtle, even loving. Notice how the lion (itself a symbol of strength) is being guided and tamed by the woman's gentle hands.

Card 8 will appear in a reading when its qualities are needed. It can be a reminder not to despair or give up. You have the inner strength to endure and triumph. If you are pushing too hard, you need to withdraw for the moment and be patient. If other people or circumstances are driving you crazy, remember the strength that comes with love and forbearance. These will see you through the hardest moments.

In the Aleister Crowley Toth Deck, the trump card "strength" isn't called strength...he calls it "Lust"

12th Trump card: Lust
This card was formally called Strength. It implies, however, not only strength, but joy in strength exercised. The seven heads of the lion are, respectively, that of an angel, saint, poet, adultress, warrior, satyr, and lion-serpent. The central figure is the woman, who has surrendered herself to all the forces of creation and who rides astride of the Beast. In her left hand she holds the reigns, as representing the passion which unites them, and in her right she holds aloft the Cup aflame with love and death. In this Cup are mingled the elements of the sacrament of the Aeon. In the background are the bloodless figures of the saints on whom this mirage travails, for their whole life has been absorbed into the Holy Grail.

The nine of wands in this deck is called strength. Here's the divinitory meaning the handbook gives:

Nine of Wands=Strength. Yesod in the suit of Fire. Moon and Sagittarius.
The Wands have become arrows, eight in number, and one master arrow which has the Moon for its point, and the Sun for the driving force above it. This card gives the fullest development of the Force in its relation to the Forces above it.

I'm assuming that the last sentence is referring to the cards that come before it numerically. That's just an assumption. However, I don't particularly care for this deck. It's way too advanced for me at the moment. My boyfriend uses this deck and he's wonderful with it. I just thought that I would let everyone know how confused I am at this point in time with this deck and Crowley's interpretation on the card Strength.
