I am NOT one to just start posting crap I hear on the web, but snopes.com is really really good about researching and this seemed like an important thing to pass on--or maybe I am just as paranoid!

Can I just say that NJ is getting quite slammed in all of this since the 11th? :)

My local newspaper had this article about it:

Yeah, I check my son's candy all year round. Stuff that he brings home from birthday parties, etc.

As a rule, I throw out all loose & unwrapped candy. Any candy that can have the wrappers removed & replace. I check each remaining piece for puncture holes or if it looked like it was tampered with.

I find that there aren't many people giving out loose candy & things that are questionable. Most are parents themselves & understand that things like that are a waste of money.

Know how many kids have been poisoned by Halloween candy? One (in Texas). Know who gave it to him? His dad, who had taken out an insurance policy on the boy and then tried to blame his death on some innocent folks.

For all the hysteria about things in the candy, I have never heard of a verifiable case, except for the above murder.

Am I missing something? I've read all the articles at the links posted above, but almost all the posts in this thread seem to say that they take the threat seriously. ?? Am I misinterpreting everyone's posts?

What I took away from the articles is that someone bought some candy for resale (determined after the sale was made) but the FBI has found no problem. Am I right? If so, why is everyone unsettled? Is it the word "Arab" that has everyone in a flap?

I hope someone can explain this to me! :D Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Well wyrd...from the original snopes article..i just got that they had no conclusive evidence of a terrorist group purchasing this candy...But...that does not mean it is not so..simply that it cannot be proven at this point.

So I guess everyone is just figuring.."better to be safe than sorry.". Not to mention, the fellow purchasing the candy did have a fake cotsco id card. Not THAT unusual, but,....it does lead one to be a little more cautious, considering all of the recent hoopla.

Thank you for the info. Prevention, awareness, and knowledge
is our best defense ( my belief anyway )!!! I feel sad for all the children though. And since I cant see micro-organims, I'll take my children trick or treating, but I'll buy them candy to replace whatever I'm unsure of .

I'd rather be overly cautious & paranoid when it comes to my son. I've always bought extra candy. My son doesn't eat very much candy anyway. I just replace his halloween stuff with the stuff I bought. Once, during my checking, I found a box that had been tampered with. The ends looked like it was glued back. When I opened it up, there was a dead bug in with the peanuts. Blech! The stuff I checked & can't find anything wrong with, I take them to work & leave them in the lunchroom. I do put a sign up as to where the candy came from but no-one seems to be bothered by that. It's always gone by the end of the day! :p

OK I am paranoid about most things. :D But really! I understand that I live on a residential street and I know most, if not all, of my neighbors by sight and many by name. And I plan on checking all of my kids candy very carefully, just as I do every year. But to cancel Halloween? Yikes! I wish people would really consider that messages they are sending our children.

Wyrd~ I reread what I posted- it came off more concerned than what I meant. I mean really- If I were a terrorist capable of obtaining anthrax and explosives without anyone knowing, would I really go to Costco and buy all of that candy using cash? LOL! How more obvious could they be? :p I think that guy owns a dollar store and was going to resell it there. Of course my town had a dollar store owned by an Afgani man who skipped town before 9-11.... :)

Anyway- I will be taking my kids T or T-ing and having a good time doing it.

Why not buy your kids the sweets and when you take them trick or treating don't collect sweets collect for the families of the victims of Sept 11th, that way there safe and doing some good for others!

Just a suggestion!
