I've never been able to get in contact with mine. Everyone has one, right? How did you come to know of yours?

I don't know if I have one. I'm relatively sure, however, that I have three guardian angels. I felt them around me once at a time when I really needed support. The reason I say I'm not sure whether I have a spirit guide is that I don't know whether I have angels instead, or have a spirit guide as well, or whether it's really the same thing and I just experience them as angels since I have a strong affinity for angels.

Anyway, don't feel bad if you can't get in touch with your spirit guide. Some people have a natural talent for communication with spirits, so those people would probably be better at finding and communicating with their spirit guide. The only communication I've had with my guardian angels is feeling them around me every so often (and there's a chance it could be my imagination).

I've always felt a huge connection with butterfies and owls. I watch butterflies whenever I see them, and when I see one all by itself at a time when there aren't any others around, I know that the message is that I'll be changing and growing and learning a new way to fly. That's all the more contact I've ever had with butterflies. Maybe they just don't talk much, eh?

One evening I was sitting and reading in my little house in the tiny town where I used to live about 10:30 at night, all was quiet, and then I heard an owl hoot just outside my back door. I'd been living there for quite a few years and hadn't ever heard an owl inside the town limits before, and I lived right in the center of town. I went outside and called back to the owl and heard it hoot a few more times as it moved from tree to tree on its way back out of town. I heard it again a couple more times after that and then nothing until one night just over four years ago when my daughter and I were driving on a dark country highway on a stormy, rainy night and were very startled when an owl rose up off the hiway just ahead of the car - we caught just a glimpse of it in the headlights before it was too high to see. Somehow I "knew" that it was a warning and I told my daughter to pay close attention to the weather in the coming days. Exactly one week later almost to the minute she and her then-hubby took her toddler and ran for the basement as a huge tornado dropped down right on top of the town where they were living. It just missed their house, everything for four blocks outside the back door was completely destroyed. But she remembered about the owl and watching the weather so she was able to get to shelter. How many people can say they have a "watch owl"? http://mysticwicks.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I have not found them so much as they have found me, coming to me in dreams, visions, and meditations, as well as by frequent appearances in real life until I smack myself in the forehead and say "duh! I get it now!"

i think that my spirt guide found me, the spirit of the horse, i guess you can call it a totem. i have always felt that he was by my side. other spirits that have been by me are the elephant and the dragon but not as strong as the horse. i have always felt a strong connection to these spirits. they ahve always been there for me even though i felt at one time the horse had turned his back on me and i was saddend by it. even though now i know that there was a reason that it happend and it was very painful. i know that he is still with me where ever i go. as for spirtual dieties (sp?) i havent realy felt any of those but i think that gonesh is there strongly.

Well my spirit guides -my first one actually has been with me all my life (though he does sometimes vanish for awhile). He is chinese and my parents actually decorated my bedroom in a chinese style when I was born so I was always connected to him.

My healing guide recently changed after the one I had for a few years moved on - I met my present one through meditation, but the one i was first aware of came and stood behind me when I first decided to learn healing (as a concious decision)

I have a couple of others and they both left me physical gifts which I meditated on and connected with them

My animal guides - my first one spoke to me via a live animal and my other was a phobia of mine that came to teach me a lesson

Some people, when attempting to contact their spirit guide, expect a flash of light and pixie dust, et voila! A spirit guide appears. The truth is, this is rarely the case. Spirit guides can be experienced by each individual very differently. Some just 'feel' a presence. Others recognize that their 'still, small voice' is their guide. Others get a full-blown vision. In my case, after fifteen years of practice, I have rarely had those 'full-blown visions'. I recently 'met' one of my spirit guides in a meditative journey. He came to me during a visualization exercise. I feel him more than see him, but I can distinguish between my own thoughts and his, which are often delivered to me in a rather more snarky tone than my own. :-D Give yourself time. If you meditate, spend time between the worlds, something will reveal itself to you.

I've never really been into the whole spirit guide thing, but even I can't deny that I have an animal totem - the turtle. Ever since I was a little kid, I've been coming into contact with them. I just keep finding them (or they keep finding me, depends how you want to look at it).

I spent the night at the beach once with some friends. We just slept right on the beach and when we woke, we found mounds where sea turtles had come in and laid their eggs. We were lucky enough to find the local biologists who moved the eggs to a private beach where they wouldn't be disturbed. He took us there and, when we arrived, we found little turtles that had just hatched and were making their way to the ocean.

Anyway, here's an article (http://www.animalspiritjewelry.com/store/WsAncillary.asp?ID=3) that might help you if you're searching for your totem animal.

Thanks for the plug on my article :-) It's just a basic overview of animal totems but it does give a good start for those just beginning to look at them. By the way, do you know about turtle medicine? Turtles are grounded to Mother Earth, they represent longevity, and patience...
They hear very well and symbolize clairaudience and developing those hearing abilities. They have slow metabolisms and can show us how to slow down and pace ourselves when things get to hectic in our lives.

Turtle is a great animal to have as a totem :-))

Blessings,
Lisa

You don't necessarily have one every time of your life, nor does everybody have one. One theory that I have heard, that makes the most to me, is that not only do you necessarily not always have one, but that the animal/creature you associate with can change over time, in different periods of your life. Also... totems and guides probably are a bit different- a totem would be the animal that seems to be remniscent of, or influencing, your spirit- an essence of (whatever) that has an effect on your learning or personality perhaps. A guide may be a seperate spirit being who has some sort of outward influence on you, guiding your development and awareness.

Then again, these concepts and terms are tossed around, intermixed, and generally blurred in modern paganism. There's probably no real way to define them perfectly.

At any rate, I wouldn't worry if you don't have some ultimate huge bond with The Spirit of The Asparagus. There's probably a subtle connection or influence somewhere. You could always meditate and ask a spirit to visit you- not that there's any guarentee of spirit guides or whatever being nice.

I just wouldn't sweat it. You may be in a quiet period in your life.

On this one, I disagree....although it is my opinion and like you said, there is no real way to define them because everyone's perception is not the same. I do believe we ALL have them....that they are always around....I believe we have ONE main guide(spirit guide)..This guide can come in any form it chooses to, including animal form. This is called shapeshifting...I believe that along with our main Spirit Guide we have other guides, and they may come and go depending on what is happening in our life at the moment. Some help with creativity, some with educational or technical ablilities, some with healing work, and so on...
As for animals...An animal TOTEM is the one who is most symbolic of who we are...our main animal guide, similar to our main spirit guide. We can also have other animals near us which are animal guides that can change as well.......

Those are an aweful lot of guides! How would one keep them all straight? :p

I do wonder, do you think it is possible for that single main 'totem, guide, etc' to change over time? With the different stages of living and growing?

(I also get a kick out of the fact that you're advertising animal totem jewelry for sale in your siggy :p It'd be a lot more profitable if they changed over time - then people'd need several pendants!)

As I said before, the guides do change....there is only one guide, the Main guide who does not..The other's may come and go..They may come for a day and then leave...or a week, a month, or several months.....but the main guide does not....

Boy, I wish I could find mine. It seems people keep saying that it's the animal you feel most compatible with, or that you seem most interested in, or whatever. I understand that part. But how do you ever truly know? I mean, I love animals!!! All of 'em!!! Dogs, cats, rabbits, raccoons, foxes, horses, cows, sheep, pigs, goats, turtles, birds, squirrels, wolves, owls, tigers, everything!!! Okay, maybe I could pass on misquitoes, but that's about it. I'm just wondering, how will you ever know what your main animal is? It's all very confusing...

I know this is probably a very frustrating answer ... but your main spirit guide lets you know when you need to know.

For example, is there one who comes to you more often or more strongly in dreams? Or one who you find more often coming to you in your waking times?

That's probably your main guide.

You have plenty of others that come in and out of influence with you ... some to watch over and guide you for a bit, others to bring you their particular lessons.

I've had a bit of that going on recently ... got multiple visits from one of the little mammals that had something in particular that I needed for my own healing, but my guide is who it has been.

Mine appeared to me. I used to do regular ritual in the garden at the time, and I became aware of a shadowy figure appearing, a little way outside. Wasn't sure what to do so asked some Pagan friends who suggested that I ask what she wanted. When I did, she revealed why she was there.

I think spirit-guides are perceived differently by everyone (hope that made some sense...) so how you meet up with yours may be completely different. For example...
My spirit-guide has always been there for me, but very arcane about himself; he never says his name and more often than not always is cloaked in shadows. He contacts me through dreams and often 'feelings'--sensations I get, like a weight resting upon my shoulder even though no one's there. However when I try to contact him (as many people do successfully) he's there but he never answers, so I've learned that he'll come when he knows he's truly needed, never any other time. And I've realized he's been with me since I can remember, which leads me to wonder if he chose me when (before??) I was born, or maybe he's been my spirit-guide throughout all of my past lives, I don't know.
But (sorry, I'm almost done) when you find your spirit-guide, you'll know. Think of it this way: they're probably around you all the time, and they'll always be there if (when) you need them.
Hope this helps.

Just found this on my computer that I wrote a couple of years back (it could be vastly expanded now....)

Spirit Guides
Spirit guides are exactly what the name tells you are – manifestations of spirit that come to guide you through your life. Everyone whether they are aware of them or not has a spirit guide.

Spirit guides will at some point have had incarnations as humans in the physical world, simply because the best people to guide you are those that have been through the same sort of thing as you.

They are able to see you and your life, and as they are looking down they are more able to see the full picture and give you the best advice. However spirit guides just like anyone else can make mistakes, although most of the time though their advice and guidance will be good and will help you through your life.

Often people have many guides. There will be a primary one or two spirit guides who will have been with you since birth and will most likely remain with you throughout your life. Then there will be others that come and help with a specific problem or situation and when their work is done will leave.
Just like in real life you will not meet a spirit guide that is good at everything –therefore you will need more than one guide to help you.

Primary spirit guides are chosen prior to your present incarnation –other guides may be chosen during the course of your life depending on which path you choose to take.

I personally do not view spirit guides to be the same as angels. Angels are on a higher plane to spirit guides and tend to intervene on a more direct level –for example guardian angels stepping in when there is an emergency. Whereas spirit guides give advice and guidance but often do not take direct action –although sometimes the two fields can overlap. The other difference is spirit guides have had human incarnations whereas angels have evolved in other ways.

Spirit guides will not make decisions for us –they are simple there to help us learn the lessons we are meant to make within this lifetime. They can guide and advice us but ultimately it is up to us which path we choose. They will not condemn or judge you whatever path you choose to take.

Guides can be relatives or friends that have passed over –these are rarely our primary guides but are sometimes the ones we recognise and communicate with first.

There are many ways to meet your spirit guides –through meditations, visualizations, automatic writing, dreams etc

Spirit guides will let you know when they are near in a number of ways –from smells, to chimes (which sometimes other people nearby will also hear), chills (sometimes on just one part of the body), goose bumps, light orbs, tapping etc

You may not know the identity of your guide –some simple choose not to tell you their name or what they look like. Spirit is naturally formless and some guides feel creating a form distracts from the reason they are there.

Most people do not see their guides as physical manifestations–although some people do. However they may change their form slightly –for example if they passed over when they were 70 years old they may choose to come back looking younger

If a spirit is struggling to be heard especially during bad times in your life when you need uplifting they may send a message via another person. By inspiring a friend to call you with words of wisdom or a stranger to smile at you for example.

Occasionally a spirit guide can be a living person, –these are never primary guides but occasional visiting guides. Often they will only come at night or when the person is asleep. The person may not be consciously aware that they are acting as a guide.

Temporary spirit guides may also reincarnate after their duty to you is over. Primary guides do not plan to reincarnate at least during your physical lifetime.

Often people have a fear of meeting negative spirits –more often then not though like attracts like. If you set out with good intentions then you will receive good spirits. If you set out looking for spirit communication for the wrong reasons then you are more likely to attract the wrong kind of spirit. The only exception to this is occasionally a lost soul (one who has died and not properly crossed into the light) may come to you if they see the light of your spirit. These are not negative sprits but confused spirits looking for their way. If you can guide them towards the light, someone from the spirit world will meet you halfway to take them into the light so you yourself do not cross over.

You also have a spirit guide who acts as a doorkeeper –their duty is to try and control which spirits contact you. Therefore they will try to prevent any negative spirits from coming to you.

It however also wise to protect yourself prior to any work with spirit.

Remember spirit moves in mysterious ways –so never discount anything you suspect might be spirit

Types of Guides

Guardian Angel – This is a very enlightened being that has access to the akashic record and protects us.

Doorkeeper –This is an spirit that helps to protect our physical body when we leave it in out of body experiences, mediumship, etc. The doorkeeper can also control which spirit contacts you. Sometimes the doorkeeper is also a primary guide.

Primary Spirit Guide –This is a guide who has been chosen prior to our present incarnation and will normally be with us throughout this lifetime.

Spirit Guides –These can come for a brief period or even a few years to help us learn a particularly skill or aid us with a particularly problem. Sometimes these are relatives or friends that have crossed over and sometimes even a person that is still alive.

Animal Messengers –These are animal guides who come into your life with a message and leave was that message has been passed on.

Shadow animal guides –These are the creatures we fear, the animals that fill us with dread. It is there to teach you a lesson that often you have repeatedly failed to learn in previous incarnations. Ignoring these guides can harm your development as the fear and negativity grows.

Journey animal guide – These appear when we are at a crossroad within our life. These can be with you for many years until a certain path has reached its conclusion

Life Animal guide – These are the guides you are normally born with and are with you throughout your life although others may join you during the course of your life and occasionally a life guide may leave and be replaced by another. .

They look and feel like any other spirit guide. Although they are one of the few guides who acts more than guides (i.e protecting your body and helping you in and out your body)
If you astral travel its helpful to have a good link to him (though you can astral travel without actually "knowing" him)

I get confused with this... I have many spirit guides, and most of them change as I need their knowledge. I do have one that is with me always, my DoorKeeper. I have Guardian, however I haven't met him/her yet. My DoorKeeper brings me spirits I need to help, or who wish to help me with something. She is basically a go between, and protects me from day to day and helps me with anythingI need help with (or gets me someone who can).

I don't have any animal spirit guides, tho I have had other people guides come in with animals.

Actually this sounds similar to what I exsperience. I have never met anyone other than people in my old meditation circle who see spirit guides like this.

As for how I found my DoorKeeper... I just meditated and asked, and she was the first to come and greet me, as she is always with me. She is always the first to come into my aura when I greet my guides, to keep order amongst the spirits there to see me.

Most of this is over my head, LOL. However I will tell you how I met my Mountain Lion. I was in meditation asking to meet my animal guide and nothing happened. Apparently I wasn't receptive enough. For the next two weeks every night I dreamed about a mountain lion. I'd approach say I was a friend and get bit. This kept going on and on every night with little variation until I took some control and started offering gifts as well. I also started meditating more and interacting with her, then the dreams stopped. I need to be bitten before I listen apparently. LOL

I have a very strong animal guide, or totem, or spirit guide. He's all I've ever really had besides a few helpers along the way, always manifesting as animals. My life-long guide though is Bison. He showed himself to me, quite unexpectedly through meditation, I wasn't particularly looking for him, but when Bison makes himself present, you sure know he's there ;). He keeps me grounded when I really need it, being somebody with a semi-chaotic mind and lots of crazy schemes and plans, it's always a good help.

Other's that have made themselves very present are lizards and crows. They come and go, sometimes I won't hear from them for years, and then all of a sudden they'll start popping up everywhere.

Well... maybe someone might want to comment on mine.. I have never really "found" one either. As a little girl, I was kind of into owls because my dad called me wise owl and night owl. When I went to summer camp with him (my dad was the nurse that summer and me and my little brother and mom participated in some of the camp activities) my "indian" name was wise owl. Other than that, I have been surrounded by dogs for my entire life and they have always been central to our family. We've also always had cats but other than my special old kitty, I don't define myself by them too much. The only other really cool thing that happened was when I was walking on campus, and a cute little mole came out and crossed the sidewalk. I was just enchanted with it, and have always felt sort of kindred with them. They remind me of gnomes like "David the Gnome" :) I have always been into living underground or in trees. Other than that I really love cows, because they are so cute and content, giraffes and elephants. Does that say anything to anyone more familiar with this kind of thing?

Meditation.

Sucky answer, no? I used to hate when people answered me with that! But you can do a guided meditation that either you've found or written. Record it or have someone read it to you. I've personally found that guided meditations work best when you've got a specific goal in mind for the meditation. At least, they help you until you really hone your meditation skills.

Good luck in finding your guide!!

My guide just came to me. We had moved and for the first time in my life I had my ownroom so I couldn't talk to my sister to ese me, I had left my friends my grandma seemed to far away, it wasn't my home yet just a house and I was in a new school. I was so scared and I was crying and she just walked right in and held me and soothed me to sleep. First time I can remember seeing her, but I knew her prescence right away as though I knew her from somewhere. I was what? 7 maybe and still very much Christian, but she was there for me when I most needed her. She came on her own accord and always does.

I'm not really crystal clear on any of my actual spirit guides, but I have a few spirit friends. I'm always looking forward to making a friendship with any sort of creature (human or spiritual!) I've always just openly (physically) spoken with spirits that I've seen and felt, since I can see astral beings and what-not with my bare eyes quite easily at times.

I met one of my spirit friends through communication with a ouija board last year. I know what you're thinking, but the being had given me sound advice and future predictions so I had no reason to be cautious. We had known each other sense my "creation," that is EVER! Not just human, but my soul. The being was never always around me, but usually comes when I call to it. I haven't been able to see/talk to it without using a ouija board, and I haven't really talked to it since last year.

Several years ago I was visited by a semi lucid dream in which I was a dragon. When I woke up and every since I could feel phantom limbs like horns and wings, which was really quite odd. I started to study this and I ran into a man named Willam who had a whole horde of people who had had the same sort of thing happen, and they believed they had been dragons in a past life and that their souls were dragons. At that point I'm sort of thinking.. Dear God, what're these crazy people talking about?! Lol but I decided to stick around and learn, even though I was never comfortable with assuming to be a dragon when I knew I was not.. He introduced me and made me a part of their "spiritual family." I can't remember how long I stayed, but it was years. I'd been "disowned" for disagreeing with the man several times on different topics, I found him very close minded and rather a coward.. He would never stand up for his family and sent his friends to do whatever threatening work he had.. So anyway I am feeling very bad for pretending to be this dragon, whom I know is very real. I get another dream with her, in which she bites me for it! I finally left the "family" when I got enough evidence that the man was never going to learn what he didn't want to accept. I've never really seen the dragon again, but I think she's quite mad at me for doing what I did. I knew she was somehow -part- of me, like a friend of sorts, but not the entire -me.-

One of the most uplifting events of me learning to use my own gifts of communication was when me and my mother were in a house when I use to live in the mountains, our house had a being that dwelt in the doorway of the kitchen and was short, robust and always appeared very gloomy. All the people who lived there had seen him/her once or twice, but I think I was the only one who liked to openly admit and discuss it.. Anyway, my mom was in her room asleep and I was in the living room on the sofa getting just looking around like usual. I see the spirit and I start to freak out a little, I' home alone and my pack is what usually makes me feel safe, but I was the only one there. I close my eyes and freeze, thinking maybe if I don't do anything it will just leave, I open them and its still there, just standing.. So I take a deep breath and say uneasily, "Hey.. I know you're not trying to scare me, but you really are. I don't mean to be mean, but could you please leave me alone?" At that point I got a sense that it was really sad (it always had sad vibes) and then it just left. I don't think I ever saw it again, which again was sad since I loved the house and mountains and the last night there I was looking forward to saying goodbye to it.

Every since before I was born my family has had all kinds of animals, cats and dogs especially. So when I was born I'd always loved them. But I'd always liked werewolves, which doesn't make much sense, since I didn't even know what one was until I was about eight. I have alot of personal feline and canine habits that I never really noticed weren't "normal" until someone pointed them out.. Like licking the back of my hand to wash my face and smooth my hair, or sniffing the air to track some one down.. -_- It's sort of awkward if someone sees you doing something that's normal for you, but if thats how you feel, just do it! Though I've never really had a fandom with either wolves or cats of any sort, though I admire all animals.

I think you can look for spirit friends if you want, you can just openly talk to them if you're not comfy with meditation and stuffies. ^^ Most of the time I find guardian angles and things will keep secret from you on purpose! But why I don't know. o_0
