Hmmmm....wish I could help you out...it looks like a centipede to me....but if you say they aren't then they aren't. So wierd they arent ear-wigs are they? no those would' be shorter than the illustration.....I'm stumped.

I've been noticing this one kind of bug walking around my house recently. There're kinda crazy looking... *see my portrait of one below...* They aren't centipedes or millipedes though... they don't have roundish bodies (flat instead) and most of them that I have seen (which might be one every two weeks or so) are maybe half an inch long (except the one I saw in the basement... I think that was their mama...). They are so annoying! :bug:
Ah, now I see it. I think it's a Silverfish.

A really deformed silverfish?...

GaiaDea

Yep, that would be a silverfish. They can do damage in your house, so it might be a good idea to encourage them to go away. It might also be time to recaulk cracks around windows and baseboards, and check the weatherstripping around doors....

Her drawing doesn't look like a silverfish though...it looks more like a centipede.

Does it look like either of these:

Nope. The answer is House Centipede.

Ahh! I get these too...at least the first one in that picture posted above. They are so disgusting!

I don't see them alive often, but my cat catches them, eats the legs, and leaves the bodies for me in the morning :ack:

You posted yours while I was posting mine LOL.

Yeah, it's definitely a house centipede, especially if she's seeing 'em in the basement.

I agree. I've never had them in my house, but I know my grandmother has. Here's an article about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_centipede and a better picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5d/House_centipede.jpg (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5d/House_centipede.jpg)

The leg and body structure in the original diagram definitely matches a centipede of some sort. I have been studying insects and related creepy crawlies for nearly 20 years and it looks exactly like most centipedes.

You mention it being flat as opposed to moundish. Millipedes tend to be like a piece of thick cord with lots-and-lots-and-lots of legs. They have two pairs of legs for each body segment and they are so coordinated as to look like the legs ripple as they crawl. Centipedes are more like a flattened straw with a single pair of legs per body segment and you can generally distinguish the movement of their legs as they move. Another tip-off is the appearance of those "antennae" looking things at the front and back. Most common millipedes have very short appendages while the centipedes often have them so large as to look like giant feelers.

Be careful. Centipedes use venom in capturing their prey. While most are so small as to be harmless, children or folks allergic to such things might suffer from a sting.

Oh, I didn't know there were House Centipedes. I guess maybe I've seen those before and thought they were Silverfish.....Now I wonder if I've even seen a real Silverfish. :hmmmmm:

I can see how you can be confused... But, my old apartment had house centipedes, so that's why I know what they are. They suck. And, they are territorial. They will actually chase you. Too bad for them, I have a big rubber mallet. :D

That just gives me the hoogly mooglies... My problems with snakes and scorpions never involved them chasing me. It was always the other way around. ~does the ooky dance~

Yeah... I'm wondering why I know so much about bugs all of a sudden.

Then, it hit me: I'm the Master of Mostly Useless Knowledge. Somebody needs to make me a banner of that :alol:

As far as random bugs go, the nastiest thing I've ever seen was when I lived in Tempe, AZ. I lived in a bunch of brand new apartments and mine was on the top floor. The glass door was open, and this bug comes flying in and lands on the wall. It looked exactly like a cockroach.

Except is was four inches long. And red. And it could fly.

Glad I only saw it once... And then it went down the toilet.

Oh yeah, Arizona, gotta love the "Bug Safari" here. By the by that thing you saw is common...common!! They also come with bright red heads and black bodies. Sewer roaches ewwwww. Never fails to scare and give me the "look under your sheets a dozen times phobia" for a week. *Does the oh ick oh ick dance.*

Get a cat! :smileroll My cat (no longer a kitten - he's 1 year old now!!!) is always the best when it comes to flying insects. Because he gets scared, he crouches and looks at whatever it is with his eyes, even following it around my apartment, until I can *catch it. He makes a lot of moaning sounds too, so it's easy to know when something's inside which he doesn't like!

*this word can be left to one's own personal interpretation

If it's flat and long, I would think it's a centipede...of course I cant see the photo of it...so I cant be sure. Or it could be a silverfish...but I'm not sure they get up to an inch long. Is it kind a wormy like? if it's a flat worm...I would stay away from them..and get someone to get rid of them.

Ummm....centipedes ARE flat, not round. So they're probably baby centipedes.

And adult centipedes, at least some types, are very mildly poisonous. Not sure what to do to get rid of them, though....

UGH!!!! I have those in my house too. They're disgusting as hell. I usually find one in my tub in the mornings. They're looking for water most of the times........ I've tried all kinds of crap to kill them and boric acid works, but it's toxic to pets so I can't use it. The one thing that does help is Raid MAX. I open all the windows of the house, remove the dog and spray every inch of the house around the baseboards... chemical overload, I know, but it works for several months. Then you'll just find the dead ones or almost dead ones. The live in the walls, under the sinks and damp places like basements ( have a cement and dirt basement, with a well).

Oh my friend, I know those bugs too! I lived in Phoenix and Tempe for 3 years while I was in school and those I believe are palo verde beetles. They can grow up to 10 inches long... from what I understand, they burrow at the roots of the palo verde tree because the trees absorb what little water and hold in their roots. They get their water from it. When my dog was a puppy he was barking like a mad dog at something in his waterbowl and low and behold it was one of those... scared the stuffing out of me. I'm glad I left AZ....

Ever been to Florida? We have "Palmetto Bugs" (just a nice name for cockroach) and the smallest one I ever saw was over 1.5 inches...they average about 2 inches, and they can fly! They are repulsive! Our pest control companies down here make a bundle!

House centipedes. I get them in my house. They're gross, and apparently leave welts if they bite you as they're mildly poisonous.
