View Full Version : Ah crap! The Air Force Ball.....

My husband and I have just decide to attend this years Air Force Ball in Sept. We have never been to it because we're not the military function type. The opening ceremony is mandatory for the section he works in now so he figures we might as well go to the ball too. And he said I had to be nice. fooey
So now I have to definitely loose this weight plus gain more muscle tone by Sept. And find a formal with my mom and sister when we go to TN in July including all the junk that goes with it. (Having homecoming flashbacks.) The good side is that we will get a current formal picture together that we don't have other than our wedding picture and an evening away from the kids to dance together.
Who else has been to these balls, what was your oipinion of them? I'm sure it will be fun but I don't play well with too many when it comes to the military.

I've been to a few balls/gatherings such as that, they're not so bad. I don't like dressing up that much so I'm always uncomfortable. I don't particularly play well with others either, but being 'nice' for one night isn't that much of a stretch. Keep it at small talk and you'll be fine.

Yeah I sure haven't been the dress up type SHK (new lingo: since having kids). Oh no the hermit has to go out in public and speak to people. :fpeek:

As far as I am concerned, tea parties are for 5 year olds... blergh. I am also tired of being Mrs. Lt. So and so... Excuse me! I have a name, and I like it. I think they would be scandalized if they knew I only recently changed my name to match my husband's. We've been together 5 years, and I kept my name for a long time.

That's so right, you would be damned if they knew that. LOL I do best to stay away because normally I cannot keep my mouth shut once they start talking to me like I'm some moron. I get those questions like what do you think of the military and was is hard adjusting till I say I was in for 4 yrs myself. And then the nosey financial questions 1st Sgts like to throw in. Geesh!
And I bet you can agree that it's hard to find a spouse to chat with that knows more to talk about than how to have kids and describing your deliveries. :goodgrief

Oh jeeze! I completely alienated the vast majority of the wives with my comment the other night on why I don't want any more kids. (I only have one and I love her dearly) "I don't like kids!"
The gasps and quick steps back were comical. Though it was rather lonely the rest of the party. Ooops!

I have to say, I found that to be the hardest part when I was an army wife and had to attend a few functions myself...it would have been refreshing to find something to talk about other then that...or who had the latest and largest rock on their finger too. *rolls eyes*

Heard of it but never tried it. My 8 pack is still here, I've always had abs of steel. 4 of them are showing so far. The :crystalba sees all my preggo weight melting away. LOL
My husband said, "Hey this should give you the drive to loose the rest of the preggo weight". Huh easier said than done I think, it just adds pressure. But yeah it will give me a goal.

the marine ball is in november so you can wear a dress and freeze your ass off because they held the ball in the hanger on base.that's glamorous lol.the only cool thing is the pictures and drinking.most of it was boring military history and blabber about how wonderful they were and we would cheer and clap and ooh-rah it was more like a dressed up pep rally.i did crack my husband up when he stood at attention and i asked when the girl was going to jump out of the cake.hey dresses are easy if you have boobs.that's all guys really care about anyway.if you get a dress that gives you cleavage you'll be set,he will be proud to show you off all night.oh am i stereotyping men yep whoops sorry to the 1% of men that don't care about their woman's chest size.do you go to aerobics classes where they watch your kids those are great.i go for an hour 4 days a week it's soo worth it.i get creaky after 2 kids being a stay at home mom.i was in great shape too before my kids.i'm not overweight now but i'm a weak flubby mess so the class is wonderful.good luck

We just had our 2nd ball in a month, so i couldn't go in the same dress as the first one. The first ball was ok, a lot of younger people( lower ranking), alot of drinking and the food was not all that good. I had my dress made, because I didn't have time to do it myself and it was still cheaper than buying it at a fancy store.
Now the Ball last night was really nice, the people older( higher ranking) responsible drinking and the food this time was really good. Both were held in the same place I think it was the difference between a Battalion ball and Brigade ball, also I noticed a difference in the people The battalion ball was a little more relaxed not too much brass walking around, the punch bowl was a toilet bowl( there was a joke behind it). The brigade ball was what I call political, lots of stripes and brass. The guest speaker was a Major General and the punch bowl was silver.
I wouldn't worry too much about losing weight for the ball maybe tone up a bit just make sure you get a dress the fits correctly and is comfortable with shoes that don't hurt your feet. Pamper yourself and have your hair and nails done, it takes the stress out of the day.
Best of luck, keep us posted _twohorns_

Oh that sounded like fun, not. Oh yeah I have boobs and if I have to put on a formal its no light task, I make damn sure the event I attend that I'm eye catching and drool worthy, just havent had to do it in a while. I wish I had something like that here but nope so I have the yourself fitness program for the xbox (yourselffitness.com) that has got an excellent personal trainer program on it, power yoga dvds, a bowflex, treadmill, free weights & back exercise/situp bench that I use. I'm getting there but boy is it slow. LOLThanks

(it was blue and because of it i was able to have a halloween costume for a few years. devil in a blue dress im gonna use it this year too i tryed it on this evening and it still fits not as good as it use to but it does) we had an ok time. since he was stationed in 29 palms (this was a marine corps ball) he got to go to laughlin nv. i got to gamble he didnt like it and he didnt want me to drink or smoke either. (and you wonder why i didnt marry him) we fought the whole 6 hour car ride home. but at least i got to get away from the house for a weekend.

I don't mix well.. most of the Army wives I have met tend to be anti-AP (which I am) and I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut. Dh has been to one since we were married.

My neighbors husband is a Marine, they were at 29 Palms before coming here. That's who I call to come get snakes out of our garage. LOL
Yes I plan on looking for a super cheap dress, extra funds this pay period are not very good and I'm still trying to get a job. VERY small town, too many dependants trying to work.

When DH was in the Army I always hated the attitude that they thought they could order me around just because I married my hubby. His higher ups found out real fast that I didn't play that game. I told an E-7 to his face that if I wanted to be ordered around I would have lost the weight and joined the military myself. I used to carry a copy of our marriage certificate around in my wallet so when some officer started barking orders at me I could whip it out and ask them to show me where it said that just because I married my DH I signed MY life away to the Army. Boy did the higher ups hate myattitude. I was told that had they wanted DH to have a wife they would have issued him one. We lived off post to put a little distance between us and the Army. My deal was......leave me alone, don't screw with the money, don't go after my DH to get to me and I'll be just as sweet and charming as can be. They screwed with the pay(lost paperwork several times) and hubby was only getting paid as an E-3 living in the barracks when he had been promoted to E-4 and was married, living off post. That took 9 months to fix. ANd they kept jumping us because the bills weren't getting paid on time. Hello, my credit rating went from qualifying to buy a $60,000+ home to having no credit because my cake decorating paycheck went to keep a roof over our head and the car going. Grrr! Sorry about my rant. I'm proad of my hubby for being in the 82nd Airborne but I hate that to this day some folks in the military still want to treat spouses like they're dirt.

Never the wife of anyone in the military, but I am an 'Army Brat'...my stepmom always hated those balls....most of the women treated her like she was second class, because she was the SECOND wife of an Officer. Big deal! Who cares?! She was by far, the best woman there...bah.

Well for our 1st ever ball it was not bad, since we're just a small AF detachement on an Army post it wasn't nearly as big or fancy as I assume it would be on an Air Force base.
We hung out some with our neighbors (my jewish one I've mentioned before) & I met some other nice girls who were at our table. The food wasn't bad & the alcohol was free.
They had a retired Army POW as a guest speaker. He had been in WWII, Korean War where he was a POW for 30 months & he was in Vietnam (he has 7 purple hearts) . He joked a lot when telling about his being captive which I guess is how he deals with it. He told lots of other jokes and one inparticular (since he's a die hard Christian I was told) referred to an athiest which I think was very uncalled for. I don't care what he went thru that was rude.
The girls had a very good time with the daycare they provided in the same building and were worn out when we came home at 10:30. All and all a good evening. Attached is the picture we had made, we think it came out pretty well although I could pick myself apart. LOL It looks like the scan made it look a touch off tho.
