Stick with witches, ghosts, monsters, ect. Stay away from Power Rangers or anything that comerial. I personaly think costumes should in some way show pagan beliefs. I would go with a fairy or a witch, if I were her.

Mmmhmm. My sister, I believe, is going to be a faerie princess this year. Though she is a sucker for comercialised stuff. I alwayse liked the witch costumes, but not the traditional ones. Home-made costumes, that are more.... accurate.

I loved being the Reaper. When I go to costume parties now I still dress up as the Reaper.

I've always been a cat. First a fluffy, almost rabbit like looking kitty, then a black one with "Meow" written across their chest, and the last time a dotted leopard lady :) ...then I stopped wearing costumes (scary enough :p )

are an easy cool costume. You can do them with many variations.
Gothic. Traditional. Elvira. Lostboys. Near Dark.

Also, makeup applied judiciously makes a good looking walking dead. Zombies look better if you remember to dress em up a bit.
Because you usually get buried in your best duds. a uniform works nice. Police(dress, not casual) Military(dress or fatigues)

I do a lot of different looks for the big H day, and makeup is the most critical part. Hair would be next.

Since I is a fellar, I dont do much of the purty princess stuff. Although it would be different for a change.

My mom tells me stories of how my favorite costume when I was little was a black cat. I was a cat for 5 years in a row-then she made me be something else (Raggedy Ann if I remember correctly) but I was a cat again for another few years.

I had a Genie costume one year that I almost got in trouble for at school because it "bared my midriff" *rolls eyes* Didn't know the dress code applied to Halloween! But I was a hit with all the guys in junior high that day!

For Hallowe'en I was a witch for....I'd have to say a good 5 or 6 years in a row.. (wow) Before that I was a bunny, but that was in Kindergarden... And I think a friend and I went as KISS one year too... :D Although we didn't win for best costume at a party (that went to a kid dressed up as a cup of hot chocolate if I remember correctly)

Tonight is my son's costume party at school. It's a "Family Fun night" as it is promoted at our school. They have a few events every year.

He's going to be the Crypt keeper from Tales of the Crypt, not because he's seen the show (he's only 9). he saw the mask once & thought it was neat.

My older bro, who works at a party store, was gonna hook us up at his job, but on my way, we drove past a garage sale that had the mask there for $2. I ended up getting him the mask, hands, & a black robe to wear with it for $12 total. Not bad, since I probably would've paid more at my bro's job. It's not the greatest creation, but he's already worn it once at a party his dad had, & he won first prize for scariest, so who knows what'll happen tonight.

And yes, parents are encouraged to dress up. Very low on funds this year (i have negative 0 in the bank right now  :( ) But I do have a big black witches hat from a few Samhain's ago. I'm gonna wear that & maybe do something freaky with make up, just to make my son laugh. Cause for me, that's what Halloween is all about, my son having a good time. :D

My costume this year is called the Midnight Priestess it is so cool . It is black velvet w/ long drapping sleeves ana loose fitting hood. I could even use it as a ritual gown. I guess thi is one costume that won't go back in the closet:)

Happy Samhain!!!

I don't need one, for being ugly enough, any costume would only help the appearances.

growing up, my folks didn't have a lot of money

so often I would put on my black ballet leotard and my mum would stuff 1 leg of old black pantyhose and attatch it to my bottom...cardboard cut-out ears glued to an old headband some face paint and presto!!! Black Cat

My two other favs were :

same black leotard (poor poor) with a red circle of felt pined to my stomach--6 legs from old panty hose stuffed attached 3 on each side under my arms, connected by string (so that when I moved my arm, they all moved), black face paint...and PRESTO! Black Widow Spider!

Or, pink leotard, big clear trash bag filled with different colored balloons--Gumball Machine!

Thanks, this brought back wonderful memories!

I saw the most creative costume this year!
A little girl dressed as popcorn!
She wore a big cardboard box painted in red and white stripes and the box was stuffed at the top with yellow balloons that cascaded down hither and tither. She was so cute!
It gets you thinking... you can do somethiing similar and go as a bubble bath!

I was a Gothic whore. ^^ I ended up just staying with my buddies and watching movies, but whatever. One of the not so great things about having guy friends is they force you to watch gory movies. There were some parts of "From Dusk Till Dawn" I really didn't need to see. I ended up explain the concept of the detachable bra strap to one of them. 8O

When my granddaughter was new, I suggested that Amber and Jeff dress all in black, the baby all in white, and the three of them could be ... an Oreo.

I don't know if it was exactly 'common' but I always loved to be a gypsy! :D Easy costume to just raid mom's jewelry box, my moms shawl, an easily made costume and heavy on usual makeup....I always loved it. :D

I'm pretty sure that at least half of my Halloween costumes when I was a kid was a witch. Although princesses come in a close second.

For me as a kids I remeber being Batman, yes Batman. And then for a long time I did not celbrate Halloween, but over the past several years well since my wedding 3 years ago I have been wearing my wedding dress wich is a Tudor type dress..

This year for me and my daughters, I am making some fairy wings and revamping some medival costumes that were suppose to be for our handgfating renewal this year but did not get to use.

And becuase it is my little boys second birtthday on Halloween I am trying to think If I should make him a fairy King outfit baed on the card from my fairy Tarot deck, and as for my husband I ahve to wait and see about his costume since we have no idea What his work like this far in advance :D

I was pretty lucky as a kid. My grandma was a professional seamstress and she loved to make costumes. My all time favorite costume that she made was when I was in the 5th grade. It was a full body ET costume, complete with hands and feet. It was awesome. And it was warm too. So I didn't even have to wear my coat to go trick-or-treating.
That's one of the many reasons Samhain has always been my favorite holiday.

I didn't read the whole thread, so sorry if someone already said this. I went as a gypsy most of the time. Made a new colorful skirt and vest every year and had a great scoop neck blouse with puffy sleeves gathered at the wrist. Wore huge hoop earrings and a scarf arround my hair. It was cool, and easy to keep warm (it's cold on halloween arround here).

Hmm..I went as a dead 50's girl once.Poodle skirt and all, then dried up blood and some nasty looking cuts and scrapes. What was kinda funny was that night I was in a small fender bender and I made the guy that hit me nervous because the blood looked fairly real.

My choice wasn't shown: devil. In fact, I still go as a devil to parties. About two years ago, when we dressed up for work, I wore a red outfit, with red horns, tail, and handheld pitchfork. I wore reddish makeup and black lipstick. Mind you: I work for a Catholic hospital, and at that time, my job still required me to make desktop calls to people there. The big boss called me into his office and complimented me on my costume, but asked me to remove the horns and tail if I had to make a call to the hospital, that Sister might not like it, and because my realm of work included the recovery area, they didn't want some poor patient to wake up from surgery and see a devil working on the computer!!!!!

i think i was a witch for at least every other year up until a few years ago... it was a quick last minute costume, and it was so much fun... I remeber one year I painted my face green, and i ran into another girl who was a witch, and she had a broom so she thought she wasa better witch... and then I was like "well, at least my face is green!" and then i got really upset and cried when i got home... i must have been around 7... I also used to go as a vampiress...

Witch for me:)

My boys have been Zombies, vampires.....something with skull face...but definitley 'dark' in nature.....no 'fluffy' costumes...no since they were very young.

I'll have to get the pic and scan it...but one year while they were trick or treating in the plaza, a local tv personality saw them....and called the the Ungrateful Dead:lol: They were both reaper types that year;)

I'm thinking Zombies or Mummies this year........

My favorite was a witch, although once in high school I went as a rodeo clown.I still have all of my kids first halloween costumes boxed up,my fave been the one I made for my youngest. He was suppose to go as an aquarium. The first costume that he actually picked out by himself at the store was a pumpkin{that was two years ago,we didn't go last year}.This year he says he either wants to be a witch or spongebob.
