The most important thing is watch for the smallest contact from them - a small light, a feeling of someone being there, a light orb etc
Talk about them-ghosts are nosey like us-they want to hear what you have to say about them
If possible try to find a local group to join (possible a spiritualist group) learning within a group is easier (though I have run an internet group before which went well it is easier in real time)

I've never had to contact them, they've just shown up. I think the primary thing is to be open and receptive, but not anxious, if that makes sense.
My beliefs are a little different. I don't see ghosts as spirits or sentient things. I've never had any ghost indicate to me that it was more than a sort of energy signature; an imprint left by a person who has died. (Which doesn't make them any less cool to see, by the way!)
But given the unpredictable nature of energy, I do believe that we can interact with ghosts to some degree, and that probably has a lot to do with how receptive and psychically aware we are. So I very much agree that you should be observant and keep an eye out for any sort of contact. But you also shouldn't try to force something to happen. Just live in the flow and see what comes to you. :)
