Hey Everyone, I need assistance!
In a spread I just did for myself, I pulled the 5 of Cups in the category of "Where you shine. Major talents, abilities, and assets that you have." Umm...help! What talents and abilities does this card express?!?!
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks Everyone!

It might be saying that you have an optomistic outlook, even when someone else in your situation might be throwing up their hands in defeat. That you're able to see what the lesson was and how it is useful instead of seeing only the sadness or the loss. That you look for opportunities in every situation. :hmmmmm:
Or it might not. http://mysticwicks.com/images/smilies2/elol.gif

Hey guys, I'm really new, but very interested. I have an awesome book I consult. I hate to rain on the parade, but it is showing the 5 of cups to be an ill omen. Disappointment. Sorrow and loss from the things from which pleasure is expected.
Like I said, I am extremely new, and the only translation of my deck are are my book and this forum. So.....Please, let's discuss this card if y'all want. I'm still scared to do any readings. I'm just studying the deck.

While yes, the 5s are not very positive cards, you also have to take into consideration the position that the cards turn up in, in order to get an accurate representation. In this case, the card position is about tallents and abilities. So, taking that into consideration, you could interpret it to mean that she has a tallent at creating disappointment (which is just depressing), or that she has a tallent avoiding or dealing with disappointment etc, which seems more likely. :)

Hey that's great. I tend to take things way to literal. That's why I'm glad to have this forum to learn. Your reading seems logical, as she avoided a potential ill omen (is that the correct description?) by having the card in an area that negates its potential.
I'm really happy to have this new area to learn. I hope I don't bother you guys too much. Just extremely interested.

The Five of Cups coming up to reflect a positive character trait indicates that you are very good at dealing with negative emotions and adversity and you find it relatively easy to pick yourself right back up after you've been hurt or disappointed by something or someone.
You're not afraid to deal with the emotions resulting from difficult, hurtful situations.
That is an asset. I'm the same way and I find that it does make my life a lot easier. There really is not much that can knock me down for very long. :)

I should have read the replies before I posted. Looks like you already got the same answer before.

I can see numerous possibilities for this.
One is that you reflect back on the past, learning from it to a great degree. In examining history or the past we can preserve for ourselves a better future.
Another is that your talent may be in manifesting depression, needless nostalgia. Talents are not always benevolent (just as someone who can kill people and get away with it is talented, yet that is not benevolent by most standards). Try keeping your gaze more focused on the present and future rather than the fast, which can no doubt cause you to stumble along.
Another facet could be that once things have transpired you more than most people are capable of appreciating it, savoring it. Did you drive by a convenient store and see someone drop something only to be helped by another person? You may feel the compassion of that deeply, and it brightens your whole day. Someone who gives you a compliment or gives you a gift you likewise may appreciate more deeply than most.
The possibility of being blind to the future and where you're going is another. On one hand you have the excitement of change that life can bring, who knows what is around the corner. On the other you proceed to walk into things without any foresight causing troubles for yourself.
These are only a few examples, however.

Talent for taking lemons and making lemonade.
Talent for realizing that even though you may not have everything you want, what you have is enough. :)

Even when more than one reader comes up with the same answer they each explain it just a little differently and that can be a big help in understanding the message. When I'm doing a reading in person and I can see by the person's face that they don't -quite- get it, I will try using a different metaphor to explain.

WOW, thanx everyone for your outlook, its helped me a lot! You're all awesome and you've all given me great interpretations of what the 5 of Cups may mean as a talent/asset. Its so nice to know that if you're ever stuck, you can just put up a new post here and more than likely get a great answer!
Thanks everyone, again!

I'm with Lunacie on this one (and pretty much everyone else, too, but Lunacie said it closest to the way I would've. :) )
I work with the Victoria Regina deck. Check out the positions of the jars (http://www.thefool.com/vr/index.asp?viewcard=5c) in that card. There are 3 overturned, empty jars on the ground, but 2 full, intact ones behind Ophelia there.
So if you have a talent related to this card, I would say it's a talent for appreciating and using, even in times of great loss, what you still have.

Yes, that's what I believe the real message of this card is. Although it often warns of loss, sadness or heartache, its our choice whether to focus on that negative aspect or to focus on what is still left for us to cherish or to work with.
