Hey everybody, I'm still fairly new to MW but I need some advise. Every time I try to meditate my mind races with thoughts that are really of no importance. So, the rest of my time is spent trying to quiet my mind. A friend of mine tried to help me but to no avail. I've tried everything I could think of. Any advise you could give would me welcome.
Thanks everyone.

You could try focussing on a single thing, like a song, a mantra, a prayer. Keep repeating that to yourself until it's the only thing occupying your mind.

The simplist way I know of to achieve a meditative state is drumming.

I've always wanted to try that, but never had the money to purchase a drum, and making do with the edge of my meditation altar didn't work very effectively... :tongueout

Start with a picture of something or someplace you can visualize rather easily. Many people say to simplify by visualizing a candle or a black circle on white or something similar, however, this is tough for the beginner as it also assumes the beginner has some sort of ability already. Choose a pleasant image that comes easily to your mind to begin with instead. Practice holding the chosen image as long as you can. No matter what your mind will begin to wander anyhow. This is why you practice. Your mind wanders because it lack discipline. We as humans are not usually taught this basic skill which could be essential to us all. When you find you can visualize rather well, begin altering the picture to different degrees. Soon after practicing this try to focuse and visualize other things including the black shape on white. Meditation is a life-long practice that will continue to develop and explore many nuances as the person practicing can express. This much needed skill is a basic building block for other advanced skills.

the way i meditate is i get a piece of paper and start drawing a curved line at one of the bottom corners and keep doing it until i dont feel like it or im done with the paper. with practice ur mind will cease to think until u are done.
