I'm not a vegetarian, however, I try to eat very little meat except for fish and shellfish. It's not too hard, because I don't like pork or chicken. I eat loads and loads of fruits and veggies, and I try to get protein from other sources, like spirulina. And I love milk!!

Oh, I love meat, too, especially lamb and prime rib. Unfortunately, I love the stuff too much, so I try to eat it only once or twice a week. There's quite a diverse selection of ethnic restaurants here in Chicago, so I can eat good food and not have to worry about my girlish figure (ha ha).

I am not a vegetarian but I don't eat alot of meat. My girlfriend and I usually cook a real meal on sundays. It usually has meat in it. otherwise I usually eat alot of pastas. I also take those one day vitamin deals and a boat load more other herbal type stuff like ginseng.

I used to eat only chicken because my stomach couldn't handle red meat. Turns out I needed my gall bladder removed. When I got pregnant with my son, I was finally able to eat it again but I found I lost my liking for it. I can eat and enjoy a hamburger about once a week, even crave it, but will pick chicken over steak anytime. Instead of ground beef, we have ground pork. We also have chicken and fish. My husband insists on meat with his meals, me, I can skip it sometimes.

I must admit that I first came in here because I thought this would be a thread about women. Boy, was I wrong!

However, I have known some women to be vagatables/vegetables! Present company excluded.

Trust me...the same goes for some guys I've known. It's funny...just about everyday I get to meet some new rocket scientist here on the back roads of Redneck America!

I don't eat meat,as I will not be a part of the world wide cruelty that is used on modern-day farming.
Alas. I work for a food company, don't know how I've lasted there 13 years,as I sometimes question their policies of food production. It is a company that likes to pride itself on it's interests of animal welfare, and yet when I see a frozen chicken..imported from Bangkok,Thailand and selling at just 79p,I find it difficult to believe these policies.

No, not a vegetarian. There are meats I like and don't like, and I LOVE steak! I don't eat it often, but that has more to do with student loans than anything else!
I've known a few serious vegans in my day, but they never looked extremely healthy to me. Very sallow... and never seem to have a huge variety to chose from. BUt then, perhaps it's just the vegans that I happened to come across.

I am a bit of a carnivore too, Penny, but I do agree that alot of the methods used in modern farming are inhumane :(
One of the best things I've ever heard said on this subject is that if you'er going to eat animals, you should at least once take part in the killing of one, because it makes you appreciate the sacrifice that much more. The thought makes me queasy, but I still think it's a (hmm ... 'fine' is not quite the right word, but 'good' sounds all wrong?) sentiment.

Yes...still alone!
But it comes in useful sometimes, for example on holidays in Europe,I am often the only one,so they cook a special dish..they normally like to show that this is something they can do well and I end up with enough delicious food for two..so my husband has the rest, along with his meat!

Mol and myself actually are vegetarian..for the most part. It is a healthier choice for us and makes us feel better about saving all the poor animals. Well maybe not saving any but at least not participating directly with their slaughter. Plus you only get cholesterol from animal products. We are not so strict that we refuse to eat meat, in fact when we go out to eat or have friends over we usually have meat. We do try to eat healthier at home though. We prepare a lot of traditional meals that we grew up with minus the meat...or with tofu. There are several great imitation or meatless foods. The bologna and hotdogs are great. I don't know how in the world they got it to taste real, considering what the real stuff is.

I am not alone...yipeee
And you are so right about the imitation products..when I fancy a spaghetti bolognese,I cant be doing with faffing about with two lots,so just use the Veggie mince..keep my mouth buttoned and can honestly say that the others are none the wiser..he he!

On a sadder note,we keep sheep and although we do sell them, eventually, they have a longer and kinder life than most here.My husband is a very caring person and knows his flock well, they are just about to lamb and what is normally a time of anticipating birth has become a time of coming to terms with the fact that we will probably have to kill them all,as the animal plague,,bought about by man's greed has reaced our county.

While I'm still a carnivore, I don't eat as much meat as I used to, and I have tried a few of the veggie meat substitutes that are out there. The Morningstar Farms stuff is great! I eat their burgers and "chik" patties all the time. I give my kids the "chik" nuggets and they seem to like them better than real chicken nuggets! They also make these pocket sandwiches that are unbelievably good. The pepperoni pizza ones rock! I could go for a long time and eat that stuff instead of meat. However, if I smelled a BBQ in the vicinity..... it would all be over! :D

I'm a vegetarian... although a fairly new one. I've been trying to convert for around five years but just couldn't make myself do it. I've finally did it and I'm glad. I only sometimes miss meat... mostly when I smell like bbq or something that used to be part of my fav dishes. Anyway, I like being vegan and you don't need to take pills to supply nutrients. You can survive quite healthly on only vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts.

I went on a trip "out west" (U.S. west coast) in '99, and during my stop in Montana all my aunt served was venison, and my uncle made me look at the hide of the animal he'd killed to get the meat (he was terribly proud of it's size)! And then later during a stop in South Dakota, it was the same with another of my uncles and the elk he'd downed.

I'm not a vegetarian, but ever since then, I've come awful close ... ;)

Even before I went vegan I couldn't stand to see something that even slightly resembled the original creature. I couldn't go fishing and then eat what was caught. I didn't like where you got the whole chicken or pig even though it was already dead.. I just couldn't stand eating anything that reminded me of the once live creature. Anyway... that's just me... That's also part of the reason why I went vegan I just couldn't stand the reminders... if I didn't think about it, it was okay... but if I noticed that the meat reminded me of a animal... that was it.. I couldn't eat it.

Greetings!

This is my very first post! I thought this was an interesting thread.....i'm near-vegan (I wear wool).

I think that being Vegan entwines very naturally with my spiritual beliefs. Though in this day and age - and with our state of civilization..it makes a perspective on the issue slightly (strongly for me) different - than say 2000 years ago. Issues/facts/concerns such as hormones, mass consumption and land depletion can change an outlook on this issue drastically!

Lots of people turn a blind eye to the real facts behind vegetarianism and veganism...it's great to look into and research on your own..you may discover things you never knew! And it's great to be able to incorporate little aspects of it into your life - that you personally may find an understanding in.

woodencat..x

Now this is something I do feel very strongly about and am as against it as I could be about anything. There is absolutely no need for it in this day and age. We are supplied with more than enough meat that is mass produced for specifically that reason, why kill something else from the wild....sport? I don't see how anyone can call it that.We are using guns and other weapons and they have only their instinct and ability to run and hide. They will never be able to use a gun on us. That is similar to a man fighting against a God who has the ability to shoot lightning bolts at him. The man can never possess that ability. Football is a sport. A group of people with the same ability, theoretically. Some may be more refined in their skills but no real unfair disadvantage. I say if you want to hunt for sport...do it barehanded and then you really will feel like you accomplished something because there is a risk that you may not win. But alas, that is not the american way now is it??

Sorry if a went left for a minute there but it enrages me. I hate nothing more than to see an animal head mounted on the wall like some trophy. To me that is just as horrible of an idea as it would be for a murderer to mount the heads of his victems.

Semele

P.S. This is not meant to attack anyone who hunts.... just my very vocal opinion on the topic.

I have been a veggie for a year and a bit and i dont regret becoming one at all. i think i'm healthier and i'm definitely happier :). I don't think that people who eat meat are horrible or discusting becuase i think it is everyone's own decision. so i think veggies and meat eater are no worse than eachother :0 if that makes sense :)

my ancestors didn't spend 50.000 years clawing their way to the top of the food chain for me to eat vegetables, if it walks, crawls, creeps, flies or swims it's lunch! (pass the tobasco sauce please?)
with that out of the way, random, i've spent most of my life around guns, yes you know how to shoot straight and all but please pay attention to that safety class, even after 50 years of living and working with guns i still don't know everything and the gun will not forgive even one mistake. "gun control" is you in control of your gun to see to it that it does no unintended harm. if we are to have and use guns we must be responsible in that use. shooting something, or someone by mistake will surely not be "boring", you'll remember and regret it all the rest of your life. this from a person who carries a gun every day.
