View Full Version : Book of Mormon

I have a really weird question. I am trying to study different religions and their holy books as part of my religious studies. I have ordered a Bible off of the Internet and I also found a free Confucius book offer as well. I discovered that the Church of the Latter-day Saints offers a free Book of Mormon off of their web site. I want to order one to read as part of my religious studies, but am afraid that I am going to be harassed by the Church because they have my address. Do you think they would if I order one off of their website? I know they have it online, but I am the type of person who writes in books as they read and I like to sticky note my place in books, and since my printer is not working, I can’t print it. Do you think I should or not? I don’t want to be bugged to join something that I am only merely curious in.
Thanks,
HerbGurl

You've got to give the Mormons points for tenacity. I personally wouldn't order from their website, for just the reason you've mentioned. You can usually find the Book of Mormon in used bookstores, though.

I have had very bad experiences with mormons and have been harassed by them for yrs. I asked for their book and i have regretted it ever since. but, who knows. It could be different for you.

Well I am in College now so in 4 years I will have a different Address, so they won't be able to find me, hopefully. I'm still not sure if I should oder the book or not..
Thanks for your advice.
Blessings,

I was thinking of calling the number they list on the site if you want a book, from a pay phone to be on the safe side... just in case they have caller id or something like that...

Order the book. Caller ID wont give them your room only the campus number. And if they call or write, tell them to send someone, and when they get there ask them for money, hold a seance(sp?), ask them to do some rituals with you, tell them you're catholic, or an upstanding member of the church of satan, answer the door naked, tell them you think your roomate is possessed. Just a few off the top of my head.

A couple of options -

Many colleges have an LDS Institute of Religion somewhere near the campus. You could probably pick up a copy there.

Or, flag down one of the pairs of missionaries you always see riding bikes. They usually have copies in their backpacks.

as far as the web site goes, i know a few people that used thier online geneological database--where they were putting the names and locations of thier whole family into the morman's systems---and nothing negative ever came of it.
I wouldn't sweat it too much--especially if your in a dorm. Use an alias.
besides, it's not like thier scientologists or something

Okay. warning, don't call unless you are willing to see to young men in white shirts show up on your doorstep. Also, if you call and live in a dorm, they can still come because your request for the book is their "invitation" to visit you. As far as getting one in a used bookstore goes, you can do that, but understand that the Book of Mormon has had several "revisions" that they don't talk about. But the Book of Mormon is only a part of it, they also have the Doctrine & Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price.

I know from where I speak. I was invited to leave the church because they discovered I was practicing witchcraft, they have no sense of humor. Also, if you are female in the church you quickly learn your "place." They are subtle, but it is real.

You can always go to the church on a wensday night or sunday and ask for a copy to investigate if you want to join. Tell them you are transient right now so you can't have them visit.

I received a visit from two fellas a few years ago:\

I told them that I didn't share their religious beliefs but I would be more than happy to join them in a philosophical discussion and sharing of veiws.

They asked me my religion and I said "I'm wiccan"

One fella said "Why do you say you're wicked?"

"No," says I, "wiccan"

They asked me what that was and I told them. I invited them to come inside and talk, but unfortunatley they didn't have time. I invited them to come another day. They thought that sounded like a nice idea.....................Never saw them again! It has worked out that way a few times. Go Figure!

Herb Gurl; You can find the Book of Mormon in nearly any used book store. I have a few copies myself. And besides, any Mormon , or Mormon-operated business, will gladly give you a copy of it, at no charge! You can remain anonymous and obtain a copy from any LDS church. For a refutable source that discloses many ideas contained in the Book of Mormon, I suggest that you also obtain a copy of "Kingdom of the Cults" by Walter Martin. It is a very good text to explain the differences between the doctrines of various cults and the Biblically-based teachings of the Christian faith.

Illuminatus:

1) That is not a viable solution.

2) The person who made the request is not stupid.

Illuminatus. Your PM box is full, so I shall post this here instead. Please read and heed.

hey.

This is not moderator mode. However, I should hope you'd respect me as another person.

I REALLY think calling that person stupid was completely uncalled for. It was rude, and insulting. I have reported the post to a moderator. I do not think that was right. I would respectfully ask that you edit your post.

thanks,

AS MODERATOR

i was going to handle this privately, in p.m. but it's out there now. i've had two complaints about that post and they are justified. i understand you consider your self a "superior intelligence" illuminatus, that does not entitle you to be rude to others. the person you insulted came looking for advice on what, to her was a legitimate concern. she did not deserve a flip answer and gratitous insult. i suggest you mend your manners lest you find yourself quietly ignored by those who do value good manners

OK my PM box is empty now! Direct all your complaints there. Heap em on! Doesn't matter if 5 mods have already said it, edited my post and berated me in the thread with 10 off topic messages, i'm sure YOU can say it better! You don't even have to be a mod of this forum, that whole "stick to moderating your own forms" is one of those fake rules mol doesn't care about. At the very least you can hold me down while the other mods take turns to be more efficient if you like.

To get back OT, a PO box would solve the problem. You tell them your Name, and give them a PO box for your address. They don't know where your house is, so they can't come visit it. Assuming you are unlisted. If you are listed, then forget it, because all they need is your name and they can just open up a phone book to find you. But, you can always open a PO box in a fake name, or in the name of a company you just made up in order to get truly anonymous mail. I am paranoid therefore I have carefully researched the art of anonymnity, even if I can't spell it.

The whole point of this thread was getting a book of Mormon for FREE. If she wanted to buy one, just go to the big old Borders on highway 145 or whatever highway you have there. Or order it from Amazon.com, they probably won't sell your name to the mormons, but then again they might.

Yeah, I guess... since you brought it up so civily, I guess I can concede. Calling someone stupid was kind of mean, so Hurbgirl, I apologise... please don't be put off, I am a big meany but the majority of the users are not. So MM and welcome.

Also people, if my PM box is full, you can AIM, ICQ, E-mail me, and in fact I actually hid my phone number somewhere on my web page, you can even call me. My office hours are 24/7, so don't ever complain that I can't be reached.
