Both of my kids were vaccinated. But it looks like my 6 yo DD has the chicken pox. She has red bumps on her stomach, butt, a few on her thigh, and some small bumps on her neck. The drs office said, over the phone of course, *eyeroll* that it could be c.p. or heat rash-- only time will tell. And apparently just b/c they were vaccinated, doesn't mean that they will *not* get them.

My question is...... how contagious are they is the child has been vaccinated? Does it make a difference? Hubby and I both had them in our teens, DS who is 8 was vaccinated, but never had them. Most kids we know have also been vaccinated...

I guess I am just wondering what our chances are of having this go through the house/friends...

Any idea how long they will be contagious too? Most web sites say 7-10 days.... could that be the same if they have a mild case?

If they have them, they are contagious as far as I know. I believe they're contagious for a couple of weeks, it doesn't matter of its a mild case or not. Before you let your kids go to another house with children, I would ask the parents first. Some may not want you to risk it even though their kids may have had the shot, and others might not care. Personally, I didn't get the shot for my kids becasue I knew it wouldn't necessarily mean that they wouldn't get the pox. I didn't try to keep my kids from anyone who had the pox because I figured they would have to deal with it sooner or later. Why postpone the inevitable?

They have vaccinations for chicken pox now???!!!

I can understand where an adult who has never had chicken pox would need one, but why kids?

Chicken pox is uncomfortable for kids yeah, but unless there are exceptional circumstances, it's harmless in kids....

Note this is not a criticism or anything, just an expression of surprise. Not having kids myself I don't keep up on what they're vaccinating them against now, but it wasn't that long since I was a kid, and caught it in school. Didn't have vaccinations for it at that time, so far as I know....it just seems unusual, that's all.

First, sorry to hear about the Chicken Pox. I had them as a kid and it really sucks itching and wanting to scratch yourself all the time. Good luck with this situation.

Now, part two. Was this written in some new code?!? What is a 6 year old DD ? Some kinda daughter? And what possibly could C.P. (cerbal palsy) have to do with a rash resembling chicken pox?!? What or whom is a DS?

I may not be the most profecient chat-room lingo type, but these are tough to figure out on my own. I think I'm close, the DD must be some kind of daughter, but c.p.?

Can anyone out there share their decoder ring, or at least explain the abrevations in bold?

Thanks in advance,
TAG

Sorry- Dd is dear daughter, ds dear son.. cp was chicken pox! I tend to know what *I* am talking about, but no one else deos.

Actaully, I am not one for lots of unnecessary med. procdures, but chicken pox can actually be more dangerous than many of us think. Yes, in most cases is very mild, but can, in some people cause pneumonia, requiring hospitalization.

Personally- I got them when I was 16 and it was absolutely brutal!

I did a lot of research on chicken pox when deciding whether to vaccinate or not. Chicken pox in healthy kids very rarely results in any dangerous side effects. Makne sure you DONT give ibuprophen (advil) for the fever as it has been linked to flesh eating disease. There is a homeopathic remedy that helps withthe itching - rhus tox 30X. My kids all had it early this spring and I was actually glad! It was a good time for it and I was worried my daughter wouldnt get them before she grew up and had to worry about contracting them during pregnancy, resulting in all kinds of risks to my unborn grandchildren. This will become a problem in about ten years - women getting chicken pox while pregnant because their immunization has worn off. At least you six year old daughter will now have life long immunity :D

Ug. I had chicken pox 3 times. Yes 3 times. The first two times were mild, which is why my immunity didn't stop the 3rd time. Ichy!!!

I really don't know that it's all that harmful. Just keep them from scratching, esp. around their face or neck. (So as to not get scars.)
