View Full Version : Do you stand out?

I was sitting here thinking and was curious:
Are you the type of person who goes out of their way to stand out? Do you dress in a way to call attention to yourself, or do unique things to your hair? And if you do draw attention....is it negative attention or positive? Do you want people to look at you and be shocked (in a bad way), or do you want people to look at you and say "wow" (in a good way).
Or are you the type of person who likes to blend in to the crowd....who doesn't want to stand out or draw attention to yourself. You prefer to fit in? You dress in the latest trends, and wear your hair in a "normal" style and are accepted by society?
As for myself....I guess I like to stand out just a little. But I want people to look at me in a positive way. I'll dress in nice trendy clothes, wear flashy jewelry, I color my hair a rich deep burgundy red with streaks....sometimes blonde streaks around my face. But I steer clear of any kind of negative attention. I try not to be too shocking or make people look at me and go "tsk tsk". And I get very uneasy if I draw negative attention from men (like Hey Baby crap). I'm very self concious :bigredblu I don't know why I'm like this.
How about you? What do you do, and why do you think you do it? And don't give me answers like "I don't care what other people think"....because, somewhere, there is someone whose opinion matters.

I'm fairly mainstream and do not seek to stand out. My two "accent" features are my two piercings and the occasionaly flame motifs on my dress shoes.

For me, personally, I don't care whether I stand out or blend in. Regardless, I'll be myself. The only person I want to be is me, so I'll be me. If people don't like it, their problem. I don't go out of my way to stand out, but I don't exactly blend in. Someone once said that when I'm in a crowd, I have the look of a wolf amongst sheep. ~Shrugs~
I like being me, so I'll be me. I'd prefer to attract positive attention, but if I attract negative attention for being myself as the best person I can be, I'm not going to change. As for who I am, well...I like to think I'm kind, caring, compassionate, respectful, thoughtful and I know I have a very strong personality. I also know I have flaws. I can be arrogant and sometimes rude without realising until after the occasion, something I always feel sorry for.
I remember once at college, one of my friends was trying to categorise everyone into what they are fashion wise. He put himself and his gf as "punk" though I think of them more as gothic punk, most of his friends as goth, me as old school rocker (the GnR, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple type). Personally, I don't feel I fit into any of those.
Ok, I only wear black, I like my silver, I wear a silver chain, a silver dragon pendant on a second silver chain, a pentacle on black waxed cord and a celtic design which I can't describe on another black waxed cord. A celtic band bracelet, 3 celtic patterned rings and a dragon ring. But, I wouldn't say Goth, Rocker or Punk fit me, I'm just me. ~Shrugs again~
Ya like me or ya don't, this is me, if you don't like me coz of what I look like, if you judge me on my appearance, ya aint worth my time.
Oh..an occasionally I go off on random tangents...like just now...

I do not go out of my way to stand out, but I do go out of my way to dress in a manner that appeals to me, which in advertently makes me stand out. Black hair, black eyeliner, (usually black or silver) nail polish, as well as clothes and other things that bring questions such as "What is that? Where did you get something like that?". While I am quite aware of the fact that I do draw attention to myself in this manner and I am presenting myself in a way that is outside what is socially accepted or expected, I'm willing to put up with a bit of attention to further my own contentment. I am certain most people in turn react to the way I look in an unpleasant fashion, though I never see or hear such. I cannot recall the last time I received commentary outside of a compliment, but I do get quite a bit of looks I'm told (I personally never notice and disbelieve they occur as often as everyone around me claims). I have recieved every imaginable reaction there is due to how I appear though at one time or another.
Or are you the type of person who likes to blend in to the crowd....who doesn't want to stand out or draw attention to yourself. You prefer to fit in? You dress in the latest trends, and wear your hair in a "normal" style and are accepted by society?
I do prefer to blend in and remain unnoticed, even ignored, but I am a secretive person. This is why I usually mask my aura or shroud myself in a way that causes people to overlook me. While I could easily dress or present myself in a manner that would cause me to go unnoticed by people at large, I see no point. I remain unnoticed most of the time as is due to my efforts and I dress in a manner that suits me, so I am not losing out in any sense.
How about you? What do you do, and why do you think you do it? And don't give me answers like "I don't care what other people think"....because, somewhere, there is someone whose opinion matters.
Well, I have already stated what I do, as for what I think about it I simply do not. I present myself how I wish, I support anyone else's right to do the same. If I or another dislikes it they can avert their eyes, if not, then they have no reason to complain since they are subjecting themselves to something offensive needlessly. Despite what people believe it is not that difficult to ignore something or avert your gaze.
And I'm afraid I must give you the answer that I do not find what others think of me as relevant. It is true, down to the deepest part of me. I am the only person I have ever known in all my 22 years who has never had a moment where I broke down and admitted I cared what people thought, or that gets worked up because of how others react to how I choose to express myself. It simply never crosses my mind except in scenarios where someone might relentlessly attempt to beat another down with their commentary of dislike in regards to someone. If by chance someone truly does despise how I look, act, speak... so be it. It does not really phase me since I rarely find anyone to be all that relevant to begin with.

I guess I do and don't stand out. I am equally comfortable in suits as I am in my more "stevie nicks" type dresses. I am short so I have no real height to make me noticed. But I do get noticed. I dress nicely no matter what style I am wearing and get compliments but have been told my attitude makes me stand out. I am friendly and have been told I am very intelligent. But mostly I guess I walk with confidence and am confident when I speak - I take care not to blow off another person's opinions etc and love discussions. My pent also makes me stand out - more the fact that I am openly Pagan. But what is really wierd is I find out people think highly of me for these reasons and I don't see myself that way. <puzzled>

This applies to me too, particularly the bolded parts. It depends on where I'm at if I stand out that much. I wear a lot of black, a lot of jewelry, my hair is it's normal color(reddish brown) and is getting long and slightly wild  it's very curly. I have a long, short sleeved army green jacket thing that has lots of pins and patches on it that I wear often. I don't dress REALLY out there, but enough that I stick out at least a little bit. Either way, I don't care what strangers think of me(unless I'm applying for a job or something, in which case I tone it down).
edit: Also it depends on who I'm with. if I'm with my friends I'm going to be louder(and thus more noticable) than if I'm with my family.

I don't normally go out of my way to stand out although every employee of the local Super Wal-Mart seems to recognize me 'cause I'm always getting "Your daughter is looking for you.." from them! LOL. I've always considered myself fairly nondescript but I have red hair (Thank you, Nice & Easy!) and I'm almost always wearing my favorite (recognizable) jacket and sunglasses. Maybe that is what does it!

i'm a goth, so i wear some more interesting outfits, however, daily, i do tend to tone it down a bit, just out of lazy-ness. but then again i live in california, and goths aren't rare here, neither are pagans.

I do not like blending in at all, and I would go out of my way if needs be to stand out. I want people to look at me and think how unsual I am. :hehehehe: I've never gotten any negitive attention so far. I hate convention, following trends, and being "normal". And being modest is not one of my virtues, I believe if you got it you should flaut it.
However I don't try to wear too werid of clothes (just outdated and/or mismatched stuff. And I do love wearing hats which seems to be out of style these days) nor do I do strange things with my hair (It's really blonde which stands out on it's own.) Though I do paint my nails blue or green. What I like to do is have my vehicle stand out, which it does, I can find in anywhere in a parking lot because it stands above the others.

I don't do anything in particular to 'stand out,' but I've been told many times that I have a confident walk. I do seem to attract looks, so much so that I often wonder if my lipstick is on my chin or something.....When I catch people staring, I just smile and they always smile back.

I would like to stand out more, but I really don't. I dress pretty conservatively (my mom would say "frumpy") because I cannot get the hang of this clothes thing! I can't put together a stylish outfit or dress creatively without looking like a dork. I really envy people who have a fashion sense and I wish I could find someone to help me with mine!

I don't usually think of it that way. I have peircings, wear all black and other colours sometimes, and do funky things to my hair (colouring, etc) and I guess I stand out. And yes, sometimes when I go out in public, parents look at eachother weirdly and then tell their children to not become like me, lol.

I'm a sheep. Most of my clothes are from The Gap or Old Navy. I am into natural beauty so I don't make it a habit of bleaching out my hair or adding much color. I get highlights sometimes. I wear a little make up, but not much. I have jewelry. Nothing crazy. Usually just hoop earing, my chain and pendant and my wedding ring. Sometimes I wear a bracelet or small anklet.
I am also very modest. I have to be. I have a large chest for my height and build. My boobs really stand out, so I am self conscious. My uniform is pretty much a pair of Gap jeans and a cute form fitting, but not tight shirt.
I am normal. I like to stand out because people like something about me on the inside. Not how I look.

I don't usually stand out. I guess I did the three times I've had my hair dyed an unnatural colour (burgendy-purple, popscicle purple- and veryy bright pink).
I guess I dress in a boring way. Jeans and whatever. I don't wear jewlery except for earrings (5 silver hoops), and the rare hemp necklace or beaded necklace.
I like to look nice, and I'd rather not have people look at me and think I'm nasty, but it's not something I consider when shopping or getting my hair coloured. That stuff's for my enjoyment!
I may avoid particular articles of clothing if I think they make me look fat, though.
Honestly, I'm comfortable with blending in and/or standing out. I have dressed in a not-quite-standard way before (especially when I was in high school - so many bright colours!!), and I was comfortable receiving neutral, admiring, and ridiculing looks.
I certainly do not go out of my way to draw attention, though. I don't receive it often anyway.. I've toned down since HS. :p

I'm much like that myself. I wear and accessorize with things that I find appealing; do my make up the way I like... I don't go out of my way to look out of the ordinary, I find it more work to try to fit into the mould of whats "in".

I'm boring, but I'm going through a mini mid-life crisis, so that will probably change soon (and I'm back in college to boot). I'm kind of sick of having boring brown straight hair, and want to color it with red (and I mean RED) streaks, and I may get one or two tattoos when I visit my boyfriend in San Diego at the end of the month. I'd love to be able to afford to change my look more, like go to Hot Topic to dress up, but I can't. I'm so dualistic, it would have to be a look I can mostly transform away from in an instant (well, in a day) without going through much trouble, because I'd love to dress based on my tastes and moods, and being a Gemini, you wouldn't know what my "real look" is from day to day.

When I was much younger, I dressed and wore my hair in ways that stood out. Now that I'm older, I no longer feel the need to dress a certain way to stand out. Many times, just the way I act in public makes me stand out. I laugh a lot....loud and obnoxious laughter. Sometimes I do weird little dances, or I blurt out strange comments. I can't help it. I'm not crazy, I just like to have fun. I suppose that is what makes me stand out.
***Now I will sit here and wait for everyone who knows me to make fun of me for saying I'm not crazy. Yeah, y'all are funny***

I guess I stand out a little because even though I have been in Canada for several years, my look is still very "European" (read: constantly overdressed  ).
Then there is my accent, which always puzzles everybody: knowing that I am from France, people expect me to sound like the Inspector Clouseau, but from what I am told, my accent is apparently a strange mix of Dutch, Swedish and Polish...
Some of my hobbies and interests are also somewhat unusual and grab people's attention, but of course you would have to get to know me better to notice these things.
Other than that, there is nothing that would make me stand out in a crowd, really.

I stand out when I want to stand out.... not a lot, though.... just enough to be noticed. I'll wear a clevage top, or a sexy skirt.... or a flashy bit of jewlery. My tattoos stand out when people can see them. Beyond that, no, I don't. I'm just your ordinary small town Mom.

I guess I'm somewhere between blending in and standing out. I like to play a lot with fashion and I dress appropriately for the occasion, but I always have something that makes me stand apart from the crowd. I like positive attention and people do compliment me on a blouse, a handbag, a piece of jewelry, things like that. Oh and my hair does get a lot of attention. It's naturally curly and a lot of people like it. My hair gets a lot of attention though. It's naturally curly and a lot of people like it.

i get about as much attention as i should. what im wearing depends on a few things, what im doing that day, who ill run into, how much effort i choose to expend in the morning, and what i want to wear. usually jeans and a t-shirt, but, without being specific as to numbers, ive got more than enough pairs of jeans to choose from. similar to pandoras, people notice and comment alot about my hair, its golden blond and goes wavy on the sides and back and curls into loose ringlets at the front on its own, and its really soft because i take damn good care of it (im deeply shallow). and, again thanks to effort expended, i have clear, bright skin, which you dont find on many people at all.
but its only when i run errands in my pyjamas (theyre blue..............with polar bears and igloos on them) that i get inordinate attention.

I don't know if I stand out. I'd have to ask around to really know that. I don't think I do, though.
My hair is light brunette right now - straight and long. I dress "classy" during the work days, and away from the office I tend to steer toward comfortable fashions in earth-tone colors. I love greens, browns, tans... and what makes any old boring outfit really pop is a chunky stone beaded necklace. I wear a lot of those to spice up my attire. I love rocks around my neck. :) My favorite necklace right now has a huge fossil on it, and I get a lot of comments for it. So, I suppose when I wear a nice chunk of stone, I stand out. Oh, and my wedding ring always gets a ton of attention. So, I don't necessarily stand out, but my stones do.

Newbie here and I sure hope I'm doing this correctly. :weirdsmil
I do like to stand out, but in a different way than the last few years. I used to work at a job where I'd been for many years. I was totally out of the broom closet so I used to wear my large celtic pentacle openly. About a year ago I started a new job and am very much back in the closet. My intuition told me not to be so open about it. I still wear a lot of silver gemstone jewelry, but I've realized that not wearing a pentacle doesn't change the fact that I am indeed a witch. I wear my pentacle always, it's within me. As for clothing I'm a chameleon. One day preppy, one day surfer, the next day bohemian and so on. My hair is dark brown with blonde and red highlights and I have no tattoos, or body piercings. I stand out with my confidence and with fragrance.

I confuse people, not sure if that stands out or not. Around here a woman 5'8" stands out regardless and during the week I wear my work boots than make me 5'10" uniform shirt and jeans, I am a phoneperson, the only female ever in this area, so I stand out for that alone, add to it my 12 earrings, and usually purple to deep auburn hair, and the fact I am a middle aged mom, people dont seem to know what to think, although they rarely think I am old enough for two teens. when not at work I wear jean/shorts and teeshirt, I do utilize my cleavage, but thats about as sexy as I get, I wear vans, and yes I even skateboard some. I wear all my necklaces all the time, they usually hide in before mentioned cleavage though, so unless you are looking.... I feel invisible, but get weird attention, confused attention, as in everything I dont seem to fit.

I don't go out of my way to stand out or to get attention, I just DO.
It's not something I particularly enjoy either. I've always been this way, so I guess I should be used to it by now. Right? :flowers:

I used to love to dress in unusual clothes, changed my hair color every month, and did whatever I felt like on any given day. I've never liked being the center of attention but peolple would notice. My family and friends always said I was weird or strange but I thought of myself as unique. Now I dress casual most days because I am a mother and dieing my hair or even going shopping to find a great outfit is something I don't have time for anymore.

I try to blend. I don't care to be the center of attention although from what my friends say, I tend to get noticed more than I realize. They call my style tomboy sexy *shrugs* I am not a girly girl. I rarely wear makeup but I LOVE clothes and jewelry although most of my attire is understated. I am only around 5', have short kinda spikey hair that is brown with blonde highlights. I am neither skinny nor overweight. I am very average.I am very picky and my clothes really depend on my mood. Most people can tell what mood I am in by looking at my outfit. Sometimes I would love to dress outrageously but I don't think I could pull it off, so I don't.
Or are you the type of person who likes to blend in to the crowd....who doesn't want to stand out or draw attention to yourself. You prefer to fit in? You dress in the latest trends, and wear your hair in a "normal" style and are accepted by society?

I'm fairly mainstream and do not seek to stand out. My two "accent" features are my two piercings and the occasionaly flame motifs on my dress shoes.
I happen to adore your shoes, thank you. I think they're very fitting.

I used to dress up for attention from friends...and then I realized that the less people noticed me, the better...

i like to fit in, but in a different way to most people, i think.
If im with a new croud, i like to be like a jigsaw piece, fit in perfectly, but be no more noticeable then anyone else.
with my friends, it doesnt bother me.i never think about it.

Me?......................... hrmm?? I probably stand out. I'm a person who doesn't care if I do or I don't cuz you're either going to like me or hate me by first impression anyway. I probably stand out more that I blend in because that's just how I am. More often than not I'll be "that girl" that parents see walking in the mall witl he hair all flippy/spikey black pants (goddess forbid ::rolls eyes::) and my Eighteen Visions shirt and I get dirty looks like I'm from Mars. One of these days I should just dress up like a "martian" and see what they really think.

I try to not stand out. I like to stay on the fringe, in the shadows, and not be noticed. So far I have been unsuccessful. People tend to notice a trainwreck when they see it.

My father and I used to eat out on occasion and we would play this game, trying to guess what people were like according to their clothing, accent, mannerisms, etc...How old they were, how much money they made, where they were from. It was so much fun that I do this all the time; especially in the checkout at the grocery store, where I can get a good look at the person in front of me and what they are bringing home to eat...
As a result, I'm really prone to dressing to blend in. I find it enjoyable that I can remain at a distance, unnoticed, and watch the comings and goings of the people around me. (Or perhaps I'm just nosey)..
And also, I'm a true comfort hound. I don't like to iron and my nemises is any and all forms of laundry, so jeans and T-shirts are the thing for me. What can I say? It's easy.

i dress how i please, which is usually way too lazy (jeans, t-shirts) to draw attention. however, in colder weather, i like to wear my full-length black leather trenchcoat with fancy silver buttons and this draws attention sometimes. usually i seek to avoid attention, and if i want to draw it i dress unusually rather than trendily. my taste runs toward the gothic, the old-fashioned, and the shiny when i want to spend time looking fancy.

Depends on the day. :)
Some days, I like to blend in, go with the flow, and try to make it through the day unscathed and unnoticed.
Most of the time though, I like to dress nice, and get the positive attention that comes with it, because... well, its fun.
Once in awhile, I like to dress outrageously - but not too often.
Sometimes, its just fun to make people's jaws drop.

I'm just me. I don't really make a point of standing out or fitting in, either way. I guess my physical appearance doesn't really do anything to make me stand out, but I think personality-wise once people get to know me a bit they do think I'm outside the norm. I've had a good many people tell me so...usually in a positive way. ;)

I mostly blend in. I don't like to be the center of attention. I just like to be left alone to do my thing. The only thing that might attract attention to me is my tattoos. But they are relatively small and not in really attention grabbing places (1 on my ankle and 1 on my shoulder). But tattoos are pretty mainstream now-a-days, so you really have to have an intersting one to get me to notice.
