grrrr, they've blocked MysticWicks at our school now, apparently because it contains the word 'Satan'! ARGH! It annoys me so much! There are so many arguements against blocking every website with the word 'Satan' in! Like, what if it was a website discussing Christianity-the word 'Satan' would have to crop up somewhere. Or what if it's one like MW, where we're setting the record straight about how Pagans aren't Satanists. And anyway, what's so wrong with Satanism? It's just another religion that happens to do things differently.
I'm NOT in any way trying to provoke a Satanist debate, I'm sure you've all had plenty of them and you're sick to death, but I just wanted to tell *some*one how annoyed I am, and you guys are always so understanding :)

If you're clever enough any block can be circumvented.

I hate dealing with those things. I just had a friend sound off to me that she was at a library trying to get at info on breast cancer. all her searches came up blank, because the text included the word "breast". brilliant huh?

censorship is stupid. . . literally!
It blocks important things, and yet allows the dumb things to get through! I've seen it -_-; it's annoying.
(the above is my opinion. . . don't get your fur all static-electricity-like)

yup. I can see where programs like that have thier place. If you have small children, it might not be a bad idea.
id much rather that than some kind of regulation for the entire internet, if thats even possible.
but it's still irritating to run into them.

Can you approach your school authorities... maybe through the student council... or a guidance counsellor? Seems to me that there might be a mis-understanding here. It usually doesn't do any harm to at least ask in a non-confrontational way. Who knows.. you might change something for the better. bb talamh

Satanism is also a recognized religion in the US if im not mistaken.
You may want to look some information up and bring it into the school regarding what satanism really is, and what wicca really is, and reiterate the fact that the two are NOT synonimous.
That's what I did... A LOT.
Be more mature than the system.

Hmm... I hardly ever use the 'net at my school... I can't stand being watched... I am totally against censorship. And that is censorship of ANYTHING, be it porn or MW. I always liked the whole freedom thing. Ability to do whatever whenever... If I at the comp lab at my school, which is almost never, I'm probably playing a game, listening to music, or playing with simple text... Ugh, besides, all they have are Macs, and now offense to mac users, but I firmly think macs suck... Nothing is going to change my mind on that... Macs... **shudder**

Ball-Bhreac Ròn, have you tried to look up some right-wing Christian sites to see if they're blocked as well? (the reason I suggest "right-wing" is because they tend to talk about the Devil and Satan, etc, more often than more moderate Christian sites.) I'd love to see what your school says about that! :D

Web sense = nonsense. It is stupid to censor so much stuff, especially on a college computer. Now I understand monitering for porn, but lets not get crazy...

Wow, you're in university, Ball-Bhreac Ròn - I see your profile lists you as 14?
Unfortunately schools have every right to restrict access to information on their computers. It gets kind of ridiculous though doesn't it?
At my fiance's work such programs have never been used. It is easy, mind you, to monitor activity on the network. That was also done at our college (monitoring of activity) and those who were caught accessing information that was not appropriate (ie. hate sites, porn) were disciplined. The same goes for my fiance's work. I think this is a more effective means. People aren't blocked from accessing any information but they can be disciplined for accessing information which has been expressly forbidden.

hehe, nooooo, what gave you that idea? :) I'm not *that* clever lol ;)
Wyrdsister, yep, I tried looking up Christian sites, and they're blocked too.
Talamh, I tried talking to some prominent teachers, the IT manager, etc, they all said there's nothing they can do about it, even though they put them there in the first place  But I thinnk I'm gonna leave it, I mean, I love you guys :heartthro but I don't think it's worth taking this any further, I've done really as much as I can :)

One simple trick is to go to netscape.com and download the latest version of Netscape Navigator. Install it, and the fire it up and surf the web with it. It won't have any annoying security-releated plugins blocking you.
That will work if the blocking is happening at the console level. If it's happening at the router or server level, things get a little more difficult, but one idea would be to set up a proxy server on the network to mirror your origin point to the outside world.

You don't have to set up a proxy server, there's lots of free ones you can access instead.

Is anyone familiar with NAZI Germany's history of 1936, Hitler's book burning episodes? Many priceless old books were destroyed because they contained ideas that were contrary to the 3rd Reich's philosophy. What attitude is different then from today?
Myst
October 31st, 2001, 09:42 PM
Well, in this case, the difference is that the information is not destroyed and still available. It's just not available through the computers at the school. Since the computers belong to the school they have the right to limit the use of those computers. It's not much different then bookstores that don't carry Pagan books - annoying, yes, but you just go to a different bookstore :)
