I always like to share this photo.
I took it in front of Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA in January of 2001.
I was trying to get a shot of the dragon in front of the building, but this beautiful swirly apparition appeared in the print.
It is on the negative as well. It was taken with a 35mm camera.
I don't know anything about film processing, but when I showed this photo to a girl that I worked with a while back, she assumed I had processed it myself. She said that you can make photos like this in a dark room, by spilling a certain chemical over the paper as it's soaking. She even had a specific word for it, like it's an art form, or something. I wish I could remember what she called it now (maybe someone knows?). I explained to her I didn't process it myself. I doubt that this is how they process film in those one-hour photo processing booths, which is how I got it printed, but I honestly have no idea. There were no other smudges or blurs in any of the other photos in the set.
Anyway, I think it's an authentic ectoplasm (wow - I realize that I sound like such a dork saying "ectoplasm" with such seriousness). It almost looks like it could be cigarette smoke, but look how the apparition swoops in and down, right into the center of the photo before blooming out! It's just so clear and solid, I have tried to recreate a photo like this with smoke outdoors, just so I can say I at LEAST have considered it could be something other than a ghost. I am a skeptic about a LOT of things. But I just can't recreate this photo.
Anyway , I thought it was worth sharing! :)

neat photo... does it kind of remind you of mine over on the other thread?http://www.mysticwicks.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=38082 (http://www.mysticwicks.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=38082) It's in the middle of the thread - not the pics of the rainbow, but the other one where they look like fiery rods and smoke...

Yes, in fact, I saw this particular photo, and it is what inspired me to post my photo!
Yours definitely seems to be made of the same stuff. When I was doing "ghost hunting" we could call it ectoplasm. Sounds very dorky, I know, but there is a term for it.

What is that white box-like image that the apparition seems to be standing over? At first, I thought it was swirling around the rocking chair, which seems appropriately creepy to me. But looking closer, it is more in the foregound, and seems to be reaching out toward that white table... which to me looks like a piano. But, I see a bird cage on it, or something. So, anyway, my question is: What is that white table/piano - thing? The spirit seems to be reaching down to it, like opening a box, or playing the piano.

It's a beautiful effect, isn't it? One thing it may be is an accidental light strike, impressed on the film when you were loading or unloading it, or if your camera back accidentally opened. Light strikes can be very discreet, occurring on only one frame, or spreading across several (this can be cool because then the ghostly image looks like it's moving :) ). Since the picture was taken after dark, any posssible light strikes wouldn't be likely to completely destroy the negative, just leave neat little flashes like this one.

Oh wow... My first thought was, "Hey, that looks like a movie poster" For some sort of supernatural samurai movie perhaps...

Awesome effect, whether tis a ghost or no.

It did only appear on the one frame. Thanks for your input! That's definitely something to consider. :) Cool!
