umm. im taking a wiccan class and dicussing karma. this is an ex they gave me
But you have to be a little careful not to judge karma from the surface.
Let's take an example.
Helen Keller came into a life where she was deaf, dumb and blind, as the labels went back then. This doesn't necessarily mean she was afflicted with negative karma. Consider this: She may have been born that way in order to bring communication to others like her, through the creation of Braille and expansion of sign language, she brought the gift of communication to millions of people. And that legacy continues today. So would you say her 'affliction' was from a karmic debt? Or a gift of sacrifice to serve humanity?
ok, i dont get it. so is he saying ok that was bad karma but she took lemones and made lemonade?
is that how it warx or something?

Hellen Keller was a blessing to manyI believe she was used by God to be that.
Some great blessings can come through some of lifes hardest trials, suffering tries us like Gold is purified in fire.Great lessons are learned in hard times and we can allow them to teach us or destroy us.Just like the marines, when I was in boot camp, yes it was hard, but I needed the training to be the man they was looking for,who could stand when the going got tough.I made it,and became a US Marine, and it changed who I was.
Likewise the things that happen to us can do the same.A life of ease ussually breads a spoiled person who is ungratefull for the many blessings they can not even see.It doesnt take a whole lot for a person to become that way when life is easy, its when it gets hard that who we really are begins to shine.Thats what I think.

well it is true you cant judge karma by just looking at things from the surface. The reason behind why certain things occur, can be very complex. Unless we can see all aspects of helen keller's experience and past lives (tedious and difficult), no one can say for sure why keller was born blind, deaf and dumb.... not even that it was a "gift of sacrifice" to serve humanity. We can only make educated guesses as to the actual rationale.
However, that her life was a blessing to many, is something that no one can dispute.

From your description, I don't think he's saying she had bad karma. He is saying it MIGHT BE that the decision to be deaf, blind and dumb was voluntary... for the good of humanity as a whole.
karma ... at least from what i was taught and currently understand, is "debt". If you do something nice for someone and was never repaid in kind, that person owes you a debt... a good one for you no doubt, but still a "debt". That is why there are those who believe in doing benevolent deeds, so as to help accumulate good karma for themselves.
As with all "debt", it needs to be repaid.... or balanced. A gift given in one lifetime has to be balanced with being given something similar in another life. This is so that our souls understand both sides of the equation and can experience giving and receiving. This is one type of karmic pattern and balance.
The other type which involves good and bad karma can be seen in the following example:
A man who kills many people in one lifetime, will have to go through the consequences. However there is more than one way to balance the karma of killing.
1. Through preventing the death of many
2. Through being killed by his victims
3. Through being put in the same situation himself, but on the opposite side (ie. victim of some murderer)
What the consequence is depends pretty much on what the lesson to be learnt is.
Recently I had myself experienced the balancing of some ancient karma.
here it is http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=96617 (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=96617)
now... what happened to that curse which was placed on me? Well, one of the things was that I had it sent back to the original caster so he can deal with it.
Now, recently I found out who that person might be. I don't know this person personally, I heard about him through a mutual friend . Ironically, that person was the victim of a knife attack. Reason for the attack? Well, this is where it gets interesting..... The guy who swung a knife at him did so on the belief that he was "a reincarnated evil black magician" from ancient times, on a planet that is ruled by "elves", and that he still carried the "evil" with him into this lifetime.
Before this incident and for a month after, I didnt even know this guy existed. Both this guy and his attacker know nothing about me and have never ever read about my experiences... of this I am certain because it was confirmed by the mutual friend.
I thought a lot about contacting this guy, but then decided against it.... for now.
Im bringing this situation up because this is an interesting example about how karmic balance occurs. Hope it helps you understand karma better.

My fiancee has spinal ambiffita and is confined ot a wheelchair. I don't think it was done cause he did anything wrong or his parents did. In a way, if the draft comes back, it may in fact save his life.
I think often peole who have disabilities serve a purpose by giving others hope. Like, "If this person can be blind or have cancer and still be happy and still show love and ocmpassion isntead of only self pity, why can't I?"
I also feel very thankful for what I have and what I don't have (as far as disabilities) by seeing others with these things.
