View Full Version : A Stone From Flar

I'm not sure if I could photograph this so that you could even see anything. When I was at the cemetary, I was tidying up Flar's grave, which is still a mound of dirt. There were lots and lots of rocks, and I built a stone circle around it.
Now, we have a lot of rocks here that have a glitter to them, but one kept catching my attention because it had more sparkle than the rest of them. I picked it up, and there is an opening in the middle on the side edge that looks like a small cluster of quartz crystals. They are perfectly clear and very beautiful. There is a line from that point that goes across the top of the stone on one side, and on the other, a small hole that has what looks like more crystal or a glass-like substance.
I'm afraid to bust it open for fear of destroying it. Who would I ask to look at this to tell me what's in there? Or break it open?
It's a flat rock, off white color with reddish orange markings/streaks.

If you live anywhere near a university or college, see if they have a geology department. They might be able to tell you something about the rock without it being cut into. Alternatively, if you have a real rock shop near you (not just a metaphysical store that carries crystals) they are also likely to have staff with geology expertise.
Let us know what you find out. It sounds really neat.
Lisa, who loves rocks =)

Well, duh, we live practically next door to Northeastern State University :abanana:
I'll check! Thanks so much! and it is neat, the particles are so crystal clear and beautiful. And Joe knew I loved rocks, he used to laugh at me. See, I have this habit of having to take a rock home with me from everywhere I go. They go into a special garden. The rocks call to me when they want to come home with me :hmmmmm:

I have an uncanny habit of finding heart shaped rocks wherever I go. My smallest is a perfect, flat heart about 1/2 inch across the top. It sits in my kitchen window. My largest is about 15 inches across and weighs about 15 pounds - it sits at the feet of Sophia, my garden goddess. I have heart shaped rocks scattered all over my garden in on every altar in my house, so I totally get the rock collecting thing!
I once asked a friend what she thought this perpetual finding of heart rocks meant...she said it means that the Universe loves me. I'll take that, thanks! I think your new find is definitely a gift from Flar, who loves you.

Freyja, can you scratch the stone with your fingernail or do you need something sharper like a quartz crystal?(The answering to this question would not helpful to me but would be for Czeechwoods)
Also a pic would be helpful. Also was the unopened section of the stone smooth or very rough?

The stone as a whole seems to have an outer shell or coating, the part that's streaked with orange. I whacked an end of it against another rock and it broke off. The orange part broke off in a thin sheet and the inner part is a smooth, streaked with a whitish-light gray that almost resembles mother of pearl.
Which part do you mean about the scratching? I can't scratch the outer stone with my fingernail. The clear crystal-lookinig part I'm afraid to scratch because there's so little of it. I'll try to get a pic but I don't think it's going to photograph very well.
The small section that looks like crystal is rough - it's a small cluster.

This could be a geode. I`m not entirely sure. I was asking you about the scratching because Czeechwoods can tell by the hardness of the stone. something i still need to learn.
Ok ,if you feel nervous about the crystal part that's ok. If you have a quartz crystal with you try to scratch the outter stone with it. if you can it's MOH is 7 or under. As far as the pic is concerned , do the best you can. it would be most helpful.

I was going to say it sounds like a partially opened Geode, which is very cool :) If the geology dept. can't help you, look for a lapidary in the yellow pages. My aunt is one and she loves finds like that!

'K, I will get a picture. Found 2 more today that were the same kind of rock that may have the same thing inside. LOL, Joe's mom loves rocks too and is miffed that he gave me one before he gave her one!
I've never seen a white geode, especially one that looks like an ordinary flat rock.
And I agree, thank you for your help and kind loving heart. I wrapped and wear the stone you sent Joe every day.

Awwww :hugz: I need to take a pic of that for you as well. I taught myself wire wrapping from a book and am very good if I do say so myself. The stones choose the design, and this one is beautiful. I thought that it would be heavy because it's so large, but it's not at all. I love holding it up to the light and looking at the rutilation - it looks like there are lines of gold in it.
