Hmm, judging by this one picture, it looks like Yellow Jasper.
Sometimes one picture on a certain angle along with lighting doesn't do a stone justice.
But from the looks of it, I would say it was Yellow Jasper.
Maybe you can view some pics online of Yellow Jasper and see what you think, since you have the stone and can see it better than I.
BB,
Merry
Anyone else out there have a better idea?

Hi Gypsy,
Sorry I couldn't be of any help. Green, gee, that could leave a whole slew of stones open.
What color is that banding or variation I see? Too bad the color isint coming up on my end here, I love these type of questions!

i don`t think so. Banded agate would show more visible signs of bands. this one is swayed. almost like a piece of wood. It has geen in it .so i would rule out petrified wood as petrified wood has white, tans, creams, and browns to them. Mostly brown.
i would say this MIGHT be an agate or a jade.

That pretty much depends on the cut and quality of the stone. You commented on the green color, banded agate comes in almost all colors, even mixed. It is just next to impossible to truly tell sometimes, without seeing the raw mineral or holding it in your hand. From that first picture I would had to have guessed yellow jasper, also. However, the second picture looks nothing like yellow jasper. lol

Banded agate might have green in it ,but i didn`t rule out banded agate on that. I ruled out petrified wood because it had the green in it. From the stones i saw banded agates usually have more distinct layers. like white, brown, black, etc. This is too consistant for a small section as this. also i said this might be possibly a jade piece. Also i was thinking it could be "onyx" or "onyx marble" which is actually the trade name for Aragonite. which is green, beige and brown.

but where is the green ?
please try to get a scan picture of the stone rather than a web cam pic, they show the colours better in my experience. maybe its possible at a library, or at a school or at a friends house
i would have said yellow jasper
if the colour itself is green that would mean its budstone or green jasper aka prasem from either africa if its a dark green or if its a shady green like military olive etc, it could be australian prasem.
how does the stone feel ?
and please doi the quartz point scratch test too

Ok I found some pictures of tumbled stones that look simalar to the pictures you posted.
This one is petrified wood

This one is Picture Jasper

This one is Yellow Jasper (and if you take a picture of it in dim light with a flash it does look yellowish orange as your first picture did. I know because I have taken pictures of a picture jasper beaded necklace that I made one time in that type of setting and had the same yellowish orange results.

Was wondering can you polish regular wood?

Hmm, using my 27" flat screen TV now...not an LCD though...and still can't see the green. :-(
OK, Ok, guess I'm going color blind! LOL!
I guess I will watch and see how this unfolds. The other stone pics are sharp and clear, but not the mystery stone.
By the way, I have seen wood get polished but it would not feel cold to the touch nor would it have the weight of a stone the same size.
I wonder if what she has there is a small slab of marble? Interesting though!
I'll wait and see, it has my curiosity going.
Brightest Blessings,

Didn`t mean to brag. :ggrief: Sorry. But the LCD picks up better color than a regular monitor or flatscreen one. Good part is every day they are getting cheaper and cheaper.
Got this one for $250.

Petrified wood does feel cold and feel like a stone though, because over hundreds of thousands of years it actually has become stone. You are right though, regular wood that has been polished or laquered is warmer and doesn't feel like a stone.
I'm not sure what you've got there. It could be petrified wood, but I'm not sure.

i have been sorting yellow jaspers today, and found quite a few that match the picture above
is the scratch test been done already?
gypsy0108

Ok I did the scratch test with the quartz and it deffently made a scratch on the stone and the green colors in the stone are light olive green i would say.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
which means its softer than quartz which rules out the jasper theory
as well as the agate or petrified wood.
the other theory would be copal or amber - but you said it is heavy as a usual stone, so it cannot be that either.
now it also could be calcite
how does the stone feel in your hands ?

No offense taken here! Matter of fact, more power to ya!
I have been using my TV for a monitor, and even adjusting the tint didn't bring up green. It was more a darker yellowish beige on this end.
Good to hear the prices are coming down, not sure when I will be buying one though, things are a bit tight here right now. Better days are coming. ;)
Thanks for your kind reply, I appreciate it.

Thanks for trying you guys i guess it is one of those stones that you cant tell from unless you see it in person. The stone feel cool and smooth in my hand when i hold it Czech but other than that i dont know what to tell you i was surprised that the quartz scratched it as i was assuming that the stone was harder than that and i know it is not copal or amber with amber being one of my fav stones i actually know quite a bit about that one particular stone and this one is harder than amber or copal that much i know when i looked again i realized that the quartz just scratched the surface of the stone but there was not a deep gouge or anything.

it could be calcite or aragoite though as well, and it could be yellow apatite. i agree its hard to tell.
does it feel like wet soap any ?

Maybe it is burmatik-marble though - must look to get some pictures of it
it is used a lot in pakistan for making of vases and animal figurines. along with the more known onyx-marble (sometimes called onyx)
it is as a marble far softer than quartz

OK, everyone remain calm, small hijack of thread going on. :hahugh:
Burmatik marble, could that be what this horse is made of? My best friend as a child(who's father is from Pakistan) gave it to me many years ago after a trip to Pakistan. I have often wondered what it was made of, and this thread reminded me of it.
I am sorry about the quality of the picture, it just didn't scan very well.

As to the original.. what about soapstone? Depending on it's location it comes in many different color variations including http://www.silverbuffalo.com/StoreTour/storetour15cu.htm (http://www.silverbuffalo.com/StoreTour/storetour15cu.htm) which looks similar..
As for the horse.. looks like jade to me.. but that would cost a fortune. http://www.silverbuffalo.com/StoreTour/storetour15cu.htm (http://www.silverbuffalo.com/StoreTour/storetour15cu.htm)

of course i ll help you :D
the horse is definately onyx marble, (calcium carbonate aka Aragonite) just the green variety. the burmatic-marble on the other hand looks a lot like landscape / picture jasper or kalahary picture stone (african landscape jasper). still had no time to scan a picture - sorry
as for the onyx marble, here is a reference site

scroll to the middle (dinosaur picture)
of course your horse looks gorgeous
as for the soapstone idea - maybe but soapstone feels like lard or soap - hence the name. and gypsy said the stone felt not like wet soap

Jade is expensive. I use a lot of gemstone/crystal beads for the jewelry I make. depending on how large, type of bead, and what grade the jade is (A, B, C, or D Grades) a 16 inch strand of jade deads range in price from $11 to $48.
