    Asignment 1

Assignment One : Growing Your Own Crystals

You will be required to grow your own crystals and report on their progress, over the next few weeks.

    Materials:

    Salt or sugar
    Hot water (almost boiling)
Two clean jars (or a bowl and a clean jar)
    Cotton
    Popsicle stick
In a jar or bowl, add salt or sugar to hot water and stir until you've reached saturation (meaning you've dissolved as much salt or sugar into the water as you can). Pour the solution into a clean jar, leaving behind any undissolved salt or sugar.

Tie a length of cotton to a popsicle stick and then lower the thread into the solution in the jar until the thread touches the bottom of the jar. The popsicle stick should rest on the lip of the jar and hold the thread over the center of the jar.

Let the jar sit for 15 minutes, then swish the jar a bit. Wait another 15 minutes and swish the jar again. Wait an hour and swish it one final time. Set the jar where it won't be disturbed.

Crystals should begin to develop on the thread within a few hours and continue to grow for a day up to several days.

Oh how fun! About how big should these get? Also, could the crystals be used for making a pendulum?

Also, how much water/sugar/salt? Should the jar be filled with this full/half/quarter? How much of the cloth should be soaked? ~~ (I guess I'm being difficult again)

According to the instructions, you are supposed to dissolve as much sugar or salt (whichever you're using) as the water can take. I'll see if I can find any other instructions with a more precise measurement. As for the crystals. From memory they are only tiny crystals. But it's been a while since I've grown these.

Nope, all I can find are more directions telling you to keep adding sugar or salt by the teaspoon until the water is saturated and no more will disolve. Don't be worried if you wind up with some salt or sugar sitting on the bottom of the jar.

My post didn't come off as clear....

So...the peice of cotton fabric is supposed to be completely submerged into the solution?

Is the solution supposed to be watery? Meaning all the salt/sugar melted in the hot water ( I make homemade syrup this way it's really good lol). So..the crystals are really salt/sugar growing on the cloth? (omg I AM a pain...lol)

Trial and error trial and error trial and error............
