    Our Favorite Prayers

This is the thread for us on a Christo Pagan path to share our favorite prayers with everyone else. From the tried and true prayers of the Christian church to ones we made up ourselves or that were passed along to us by others.

    I'll start...

One of my favorite prayers of all time is the Prayer of Saint Francis.

Lord make me a channel of your peace,
Where there is hated, let me sow love,
    Where there is injury, pardon,
    Where there is doubt, faith,
    Where there is despair, hope,
    Where there is darkness, light,
    Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love with all my soul.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
It is in dying that we're born to eternal life.
"Writing is as vital to me as breathing. Without it, I wouldn't be living, only exisiting." ~ Me

    Hail Mary Magdalene Prayer

What a great idea! I think having one prayer per post might help for better indexing purposes, maybe? (Yes, the OCD librarian in me is coming out. ) Here is a prayer that I wrote several years ago.
    H.G.

    Hail Mary Magdalene Prayer

Hail Mary Magdalene, full of Passion,
    The Lord has loved Thee
Blessed are you among women and Blessed is the Love
    that You and Jesus shared
    Holy Mary Magdalene,
    Mother of Compassion,
    Pray for your children now,
and in the hour of our need,
that we might be reminded of your deeds of Love,
    Amen

You can compare this prayer to the original, which is here.
"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."

Canticle of brother sun and sister moon - st. francis of assisi

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord, All praise is Yours, all glory, all honor and all blessings. To you alone, Most High, do they belong, and no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, Who is the day through whom You give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour, Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, And fair and stormy, all weather's moods, by which You cherish all that You have made.

Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water, So useful, humble, precious and pure.

Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire, through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

Praised be You my Lord through our Sister, Mother Earth who sustains and governs us, producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs. Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon for love of You and bear sickness and trial. Blessed are those who endure in peace, By You Most High.

Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death, from whom no-one living can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will. No second death can do them harm. Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks, And serve Him with great humility.

    I love that prayer!!

Here's one that my husband loves too:

    Prayer to Saint Jude:

    Saint Jude, glorious apostle,
Faithful servant and friend of Jesus,
the name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many,
But the church invokes you universally as the patron of things despaired of,
Pray for me who am so miserable,
    Pray for me that finally I may receive the consolations and the help from Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings;
Particularly (make request here) and that I may bless God with the Elect throughout Eternity.

    Amen

The Lord's Prayer (from the New Zealand Prayer Book)

    The Lord's Prayer
(from the New Zealand Prayer Book)
    Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver,
Source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all,
Loving God, in whom is heaven:
The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world!
Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and for ever.
    Amen

One of my favorite prayers ever!

    Saint Patrick's Breastplate

    Saint Patrick's Breastplate
    I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of the Invocation of the Trinity:
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
    The Creator of the Universe.

    I bind to myself today
The virtue of the Incarnation of Christ with His Baptism,
The virtue of His crucifixion with His burial,
The virtue of His Resurrection with His Ascension,
The virtue of His coming on the Judgment Day.

    I bind to myself today
The virtue of the love of seraphim,
    In the obedience of angels,
In the hope of resurrection unto reward,
    In prayers of Patriarchs,
    In predictions of Prophets,
    In preaching of Apostles,
    In faith of Confessors,
    In purity of holy Virgins,
    In deeds of righteous men.

    I bind to myself today
    The power of Heaven,
    The light of the sun,
    The brightness of the moon,
    The splendor of fire,
    The flashing of lightning,
    The swiftness of wind,
    The depth of sea,
    The stability of earth,
    The compactness of rocks.

    I bind to myself today
    God's Power to guide me,
    God's Might to uphold me,
    God's Wisdom to teach me,
God's Eye to watch over me,
    God's Ear to hear me,
God's Word to give me speech,
    God's Hand to guide me,
God's Way to lie before me,
    God's Shield to shelter me,
    God's Host to secure me,
    Against the snares of demons,
    Against the seductions of vices,
    Against the lusts of nature,
Against everyone who meditates injury to me,
    Whether far or near,
    Whether few or with many.

I invoke today all these virtues
    Against every hostile merciless power
Which may assail my body and my soul,
[Against the incantations of false prophets,
Against the black laws of heathenism,
Against the false laws of heresy,
    Against the deceits of idolatry,
Against the spells of women, and smiths, and druids,
Against every knowledge that binds the soul of man.]*

    Christ, protect me today
    Against every poison, against burning,
    Against drowning, against death-wound,
That I may receive abundant reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,
    Christ in the fort,
    Christ in the chariot seat,
    Christ in the stern.

Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

    I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of an invocation of the Trinity,
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
    The Creator of the Universe.

Another prayer that I use almost daily.
*I usually eliminate the parts between the [], however!

O burning mountain, O chosen sun,
O perfect moon, O fathomless well,
O unattainable height, O clearness beyond measure,
O wisdom without end, O mercy without limit,
O strength beyond resistance, O crown of all majesty,
the humblest you created sings your praise.

    All shall be well,
    And all shall be well,
And all manner of things shall be well.

    - St Julian of Norwich

That one never gets old. :D
Cease then and let me alone,
that I may take comfort a little before I go whence I shall not return,
    even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
a land of darkness, as darkness itself,
and of the shadow of death without any order,
and where the light is as darkness.

This one totally embodies everything I could ever ask of God or of my religion and spirituality. It's by Mother Teresa.

Dear Jesus, help us to spread Your fragrance everywhere we go.
Flood our souls with Your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess our whole being, so utterly,
That our lives may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through us, and be so in us,
That every soul we come in contact with may feel Your presence in our soul.
Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus!
    Stay with us, and then we shall begin to shine as You shine;
So to shine as to be a light to others.
    The light O Jesus will be all from You, none of it will be ours;
It will be You, shining on others through us.
Let us thus praise You without preaching, not by words but by our example,
By the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what we do,
The evident fullness of the love our hearts bear to You. Amen.

"perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave." Rilke.
