    Seeing Archangel Michael while meditating

Last night I was meditating and Archangel Michael appeared before me. Although I am a Christian, (I'm a Catholic who doesn't go for all the bs about 'this is how you need to live your life,') I've never really thought much about angels at all, although my mum absolutely adores Archangel Michael. Anyway, he appeared before me while I was meditating, and before I knew what I was doing, I found myself dedicating myself to him. After doing that, I guess I realised that I had just made some kind of commitment, and I came out of the meditative state.

So what I want to know is, what the hell happened? lol. What does dedicating myself to an Archangel mean? I plan on going to the library tomorrow to do some research, but what are your thoughts?

    Interesting.
I suppose it depends on how you view angels. And dedication - to you, is that like a patron deity relationship or something else?
You said you're Catholic, but I'm not sure if you view angels as the Church does, so my comments will be more general.

People can have an angel as a patron saint. Michael in many Christian denominations is a saint even though he's an archangel. A patron saint is different than a patron deity, though. Many Catholics have one or a few patron saints they're dedicated to in that they pray to them for intercession, have prayer cards, statues, etc for them and show them devotion (though not the same caliber given to God or even Mary).

I think the function of an angel (one who works for God in various ways) doesn't really work with the patron deity concept as the worship of angels in Christianity is forbidden and all the lore of angels say God, not them are the ones to be worshiped. Also his name means "Who is like God?" and is said to be the war-cry in Heaven. It's to be answered as a negative -- no one is like God. But this is where your own person beliefs will play in and how you view angels. There are those that do worship angels as sort of deities. And there are more esoteric practices that involve angels without the focus on God. Oh and in Santeria, I believe the Orisha Ogun is linked to St. Michael. There's a Deity of the Week page on him. It could be possible Ogun appeared to you as Michael as Michael was an image you know and are more comfortable with? I don't know... just throwing ideas out there!

Perhaps he has a message for you or is to act as a guide?
Perhaps that's what the dedicating meant-- that you are under his protection?

I'd read up on him and see if anything stands out to you. He's the patron saint of many things, often having to do with security, law enforcement and protection (battle, defense, etc).
Here are some sites that may help:

    etc

Also, try Google Book's previews. There are tons of books that mention him and with the preview you can read many things: http://www.google.com/search?sugexp=...w=1024&bih=610
(if that link doesn't work, just go to Google Books and search "archangel michael"

And here are some Christian prayers - litany, chaplet, etc. Not sure if you'd be interested in these, but here they are -

I have a St. Michael medal. I got it long ago, because he's the patron saint of police officers and for most of my life I wanted to be a cop. And I used to be really into angels. I wore it for years Michael is one if my favorite angels.

I think the best thing to do is ask Michael what the meditation was about.
Ask for a clear sign or message to clarify.
    And go from there.

    Namaste,

I've heard of people consecrating themselves to the holy angels, so perhaps this is what took place? The act of consecration to angels, the Theotokos, Christ, among others, seems like a common practice in Catholicism, from what I can recall in my short time as a Catholic.

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts! Agaliha, thanks for all those links.

This is all very new to me, as when I say I'm Catholic, I've been baptised, confirmed and all that, but it's only in the last two or three years that I've given spirituality any thought at all. This is the first experience I've had with making some kind of connection with any kind of higher being, so it came as quite a shock, but I'm going to explore all those links, find some books, keep meditating and just see what happens.

Here's a bit of a follow up if anyone's interested. A few weeks ago I had a tarot/numerology reading and the reader asked about Archangel Michael. I told her about my above mentioned experience and she said that she doesn’t see any karmic debts or vows or anything like that to him, but that we have a past life connection and I can call on him for help and assistance from that.
