DD: "I'm a witch, too!"
So we're sitting at the kitchen table with one of our Christian friends yesterday discussing Hallowe'en costumes, and Shakti asks me what I'm going to be for Hallowe'en. I jokingly answer "a witch" because I say that every year, and Shakti turns to Christa and starts explaining that witches look like everyone else, etc. Christ smiles and says yeas Mommy's a witch every day, isn't she, and Shakti announces "I'm a witch too!" It was the first time that Shakti ever self-identified with witchcraft.

I was like, say what now? because I so seldom use the term publicly or even privately to describe myself.
Her teacher has been reading The Witches by Roald Dahl in class, and she knows we're Wiccan because Shakti stays home on the sabbats. I suspect, with all the Hallowe'en talk among the students, she might have said something privately to Shakti along the lines of "these in the story are just silly pretend witches and we all know your family is normal and ok." Or Shakti might just be trying to "push back" against her brother, who is a practical pantheist and kind of "in your face" about his non-deism (and damn near everything else.) It just seemed to me like it came out of the blue. It was kind of a surprise, because I really wasn't sure what Shakti thought of Mommy's "witch trip". I really do seldom use the term, even though I do consider myself a hedgewitch. Part of me is like, what do I do now? Should I do more to encourage her with this or just do nothing and continue to let her be and absorb it by "osmosis" on her own?
