Magick Potions!?

I've always loved the concept of magickal potions, in games, movies, or in real life.

Now I'm an eclectic witch / wiccan, and in time I want to learn to make "real" magick potions, but I have a few questions!

Is tea made from herbs a potion, or is a potion a whole different thing?

Where can I find recipes, and information about potion-crafting?

What should I know before making potions?

Do not think that I am not serious about this, and that I do this because It's just a cool thing to do. Yeah sure it's cool, but it's also handy to know to make certain potions, like for healing, or other problems

*Blessed Be*

Patricia Tellesco has a good book on Potions (I forget the name tho )

Scott Cunningham has a great book called "Incence, Oils, and Brews" I make lots of stuff from that book

Broadly defined a potion is just any kind of liquid believed to have magical/healing/special properties, so a tea can definitely be a potion in my book. I think the main thing anyone should keep in mind when making any kind of potion is to ask how the liquid will be used. Obviously, if you plan to ingest what you're making, you need to keep it non-toxic and safe (you'd want to be careful about using essential oils, for example). As for methods, I've seen several from making floral waters to crystal waters, tea brews to tinctures, essential oil blends to use of synthetic substances. Be practical, follow your own intuition and your own system of correspondences, do what works for you. I'd really avoid blindly following someone else's formulae in general for a number of reasons, but I'm going to avoid going on a rant about that. >.<

A potion, to me, is just any liquid which has been compounded for a magickal purpose.

But, again, Earthwalker is right... be careful of toxicity. That's why I don't call just anything a potion when I'm explaining it to someone else. People assume it's all okay to drink. :/

Thanks for the book tips, if I knew yesterday that Scott Cunningham had a book like that, I would have bought that instead of his Book of Shadows

Here in the city we have a big book/spiritual object store with almost every book from the well known writers, to the lesser known writers.

@ Earthwalker, thanks for the info

I knew that the word potion had more to it, than only brews that you could drink.

I am fully aware of the fact that if you do herbal practice, you need to know exactly what you are putting into your crafts. Some herbs are toxic and can not be ingested, but you may be able to use it on the skin.

Since the beginning I was told by alot of poeple, that I must not blindly follow every bit of text in a book, on the internet, or any other source of in formation. Because not everything is true. So I am carefull about that, thanks for the tip though

@ EntwinedScylla, thanks for your reply.

I know that if you did not have fully researched the herbs that you are using, you could get in some serious problems.

Yeah that's probably the best thing to do, dont just say you could ingest every kind of "potion", because not every potion is made for that type of use.

I recently had a discussion about potions with a girl that was brought up pagan.

Apparently, if you want to get the most desired effect it's best not to mix more than three items in a potion. If you add any more than that then the potion will get muddled with all the attributes and abilities of the properties mixed with in.

It's also very important to do all the mixing within a circle and with all the elements represented. And blessed water/moon water or a water that has been purified(filtered water) is best for the potion.

You've got to be very careful about what you put in the potion if you want it to be taken internally. But they can also be used in baths, as a body rub (kinda like an oil) or you can even add the potion into lotion.

I hope this was helpful. I've never had the chance to make a potion since the discussion was just a few weeks ago. Good Luck!

Oh! And also, there is something called Essences. I imagine these can also fall under the "potion" category. You can buy Essences from just about any natural food and product store along with any new age store.

An Essence is water that is infused with the energies of a plant. The process is actually very simple. But anyways, I've actually seen Animal Essences which worry me slightly, but I've only seen these sold on the internet.
