I second what many other have said. There is no need to be a yes woman.
I cannot stand yes (wo)men myself. I don't like being around people if I suspect that they are only pretending to like my ideas.

I got spiked a bunch of times from people for being real crude in the way I say things.. Well, they call it crude- I call it honesty. xD

I'm trying to be sweeter though. You could start by telling your friend 400$ is alot of money and that she could probably 'rescue' one from an agency online or something for much cheaper, especially if she is friends with a breeder, because they sell them for less if you know how to ask. Also remind them that's aaaaalot of money that could go to debt, or house/car/food, the essentials.

I don't coddle either. It bothers me whenever I see someone making an obviously stupid decision and ask me for advice and then refuse to listen to my advice. I try to avoid the told you so syndrome afterwards but it's difficult.

I usually just tell them point blank, this is what I think you should do. I tell them why I believe it's the right decision for them to do and I tell them I'm not going to fully support them in their decision because of my reasoning above and I leave it at that. People usually tell me in the end they should have listened to me and that's satisfaction enough. I realize people are just going to do whatever they want anyway, so I don't take too much stock in it.
