The New SRA Revival...
As some of you might know, I am currently working on a Ph.D. in psychology. (*) One of my major research topics is the myth of "Satanic Ritual Abuse" and "occult crimes." I'm frankly amazed that we are still having to deal with moronic imbeciles like Don Rimer these days, and I want to help destroy the idea of such "experts" and the damage that they cause. (West Memphis 3, anyone?)
Anyways, I have begun to become a little bit alarmed by the resurgence of belief in such things as SRA in the general public. I thought we were beyond the "Satanic Panic." I guess with the rise of people like Sarah Palin and the new Evangelical Christian movement in the USA, the need for more "adversaries" becomes necessary for these people. But what really concerns me...more than anything else... ...is that I'm in a doctoral class of 10 people...and 2 of them believe in SRA. I have shown them the FBI's "Lanning Report" from 1992 that shows that it doesn't exist, and even one of our textbooks refers to it as "implausible nonsense." And yet they cling to it. Frightening. --- (*) Yes, I know...I collect degrees like some people collect stamps. There's a reason that my wife calls me "Dr. Pompous," and compares me to the fictional character of Frasier Crane.

People in general always need a boogeyman, some horrid thing that represents all that is wrong with their 'tribe'.
In some people's case, it is SRA. In my particular case, it is apathy and willful ignorance. Sometimes, no matter how much proof you give someone, they will believe in the big bad thing. In the case of SRA, it can be doubly difficult to get rid of such a belief, because there is ALWAYS going to be one wacked out case where they can point and go "THAT is SRA." |
