not necessarily, as I said before most newer macs are water cooled, which significantly reduces the risk of damage due to smoke right off the bat, other problems from smoke usually don't show up within a year. I've seen plnety of smokers computers that had problems not due to smoke.

this was likely the case this time due to it being an overheating issue. However, you could have a hard drive that has a defect that has absolutely no relation to smoking, yet given their policy not to work on biohazard material, you would never know if it was or not.
