Magical Limitations

Something I was considering over 15 years of occult study and research. Why do we do the things we do? I tend to make do with what I feel at the time of casting. I don't do circles and stars and all that dramatic stuff. If a caster is that type of person, GO for it! I personally am not. My attention wanders after a short period of time, so I tend to do quick things. I accept no limitations to my magic other than Ethics. What about the rest of you?

I'm not sure if you're asking whether we believe ritualistic trappings are limitations or whether we believe we have limitations and what those limitations are. Personally, I find those things add a layer of respect and protection. Just because I don't mean to bring a bad entity doesn't mean it wont take the opportunity and sneak in. Therefore I don't see it as a limitation but as the seat belt to my magical workings.

I think it is more of a belief in yourself and confidence... if you can not believe in your own ability then you are just spinning your wheels.

In all of even the most basic intro to magic books I have read they all stress the importance of learning how to raise your energy and propperly grounding it.

The symbols and associations resonate with our being when we focus on them in a ritual even the smallest..

I think learning at least the basic corespondences is important. The more you study and put into it the more you grow.

I can't even say that I'm all that bound by ethics. There are things that I would gladly take the karma hit for, sometimes. And yet, strangely, my life is going pretty darn well. I haven't been this happy in a very, very long time, if ever. That's got me questioning the place and purpose of ethics, frankly. Or maybe just my definition of them.

Thing about ethics is that it differs with the situation. Somethings are more excuseable in certain situations than others. I agree with the post about taking a karma hit, and while I don't agree with the concept of karma persay. If it were true there are somethings that getting the divine back hand for are worth it. Not all the time but some times a person doesn't have a choice but to be a little bit nasty.

To quote a dear friend of mine - "Karma's going to bite me in the butt for this, but my butt's big enough to take it."

I tend to limit magickal workings by a blend of "Is it worth it?", practicality, and my own pure laziness. Depending on the system I'm working (my own personally designed system, or the codified ceremonialism I <3 so), those tend to weigh differently.

I have a hard time with the Western concept of Karma. Depending on to whom you speak, it's many different things. I'm wanting to sit down with a Swami and find out what he/she thinks.
