It's normal to feel out of place when you're with a group of people from a different culture, whether that's a result of different ethnicities or whatever. I used to feel very uncomfortable attending church because the other women were dressed up, with salon hair and make up. I'm much more comfortable in jeans or sweats, I don't do much with my hair and I never wear makeup. I was the different one and it had nothing to do with being racist.

I grew up here in East TN. Not many people of any color other than white around here. I've never felt anything bad towards anyone that wasnt white, but, I was also never exposed to any different cultures either.
My ex, moved us down to St. Croix, USVI. There are alot of West Indians there. First, let me say, the majority of them ROCK..so funny and laid back, the ones I met, I loved them. But, for the first few months. I was scared sh*tless. It was major culture SHOCK.
That doesnt make me racist, it made me unknowledgable, out of my element...whatever you want to call it.
They were very hospitable and polite and understanding and made me feel comfortable. (well, the ones I got to know anyways)
My favorite memory of down there is when one of the little old ladies next door taught me how to make soursop tea from a plant I had in my back yard. I was letting the fruit fall off and rot and of course she was like "laww, no no child, we cant have that!" she was great..i miss her.
ETA: for anyone who doesnt know, this is a
