I don't have an answer. Will add another ingredient to the question-stew, though.

Another way to look at it, is are we separate from deity/deities?

If there is a connection, why is there any need for a god(ess)'s voice to be separate from our own mental processes?

Mass hysteria and mass complacency are flip sides of the same coin. Never panic, always think for yourself. Question all information, even from those individuals and sources you hold most cherished, for in those instances, complacency and hysteria alike become all too easy. All information either comes from humans or is filtered through the human mind (our own or another's) and thus subject to human faults no matter if it comes from a scientist or a messiah. Question it. And constantly question yourself.

Corvis, you just made my brain bend in ways I didn't think it could... (your questions actually go along with similar thoughts I've had before.)

Wow, extremely interesting, I never thought of it that way.

Maybe this will help.

If you are a personal being, how can the universe not be?

You relate to everything you see, feel, etc., personally; and for that to occur, there must be a connection. That connection must be a personal one; how could it be personal on only one side?

The gods are how we relate. That doesn't make them unreal or artificial. I think the universe is more wonderful than we can imagine. I don't think our brains can contain it in all its glory. The gods are how this personal universe reaches out to us, in love, for relationship.

As everyone else has stated, I've had trouble with this as well. Sometimes it's easier to tell and sometimes its not. It's a difficult question to answer. You have to have faith in yourself as well as your gods and goddesses. Each of us is a God/Goddess ourselves. You have to not doubt yourself and trust that they will contact you. For me it's happened when I've least expected it, random moments something will pop into my head and I know its not me thinking it.
